Bloc's Duceppe threatens Tories over imbalance

Post by Canadian »

Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe says he is willing to force an election if the minority Conservative government doesn't deal with the so-called fiscal imbalance in the next federal budget.

The threat comes as a new poll suggests that support for the Conservatives in Quebec is eroding fast.

Ottawa needs to fullfil its promise of increasing federal transfers to the provinces in the near future, Duceppe told delegates Saturday at a Bloc convention in Quebec City.

"Stephen Harper must now deliver the goods for Quebec, especially concerning the elimination of the fiscal imbalance,'' Duceppe said in a statement. "If Stephen Harper breaks this promise, we will make his government fall.''

The sovereigntist leader wants Ottawa to hand over at least $3.9 billion to Quebec this year to make up for what he says are funding shortfalls.

Duceppe also called upon Quebec Premier Jean Charest, who is expected to call a provincial election within the next year, to pressure Prime Minister Harper into dealing with the issue.

Duceppe said the Tories are increasingly out-of-touch with Quebec voters.

"This government is very far away from the values of Quebecers,'' he said.

The Bloc is likely to find encouragement in the latest poll results.

A Decima survey released to The Canadian Press over the weekend put support for the Bloc at 45 per cent of Quebec voters -- slightly higher than on election day.

Meanwhile, the pollster's samplings indicate the Conservatives began slipping behind the Liberals in Quebec in late summer and that their support continues to erode.
Well I am pretty sure there will be an election by April.

I'll give it till next September;
1. Bloc's always throwing their weight around, without carrying out a threat.
2. Tories are still strong in Qubec
3. They should be done by the spring, but everyoine knows we don't want to go to the polls that fast
4. Summer's out, so first chance they get - September 07.

You heard it here first!
