Happy Anniversary Don Denkinger

Post by War Wagon »

Congrats on a 3-1 lead Cards, but I'm here to remind that shit happens... and just because I LIKE rubbing it in your FACE.

21 years ago today:

The 1985 World Series, popularly known as the "Show-Me Series" and the "I-70 Series", pitted the National League champion St. Louis Cardinals against the American League champion Kansas City Royals. Interstate 70, which crosses Missouri and links the two cities together, inspired the nickname for this year's Major League Baseball championship.

This World Series has long been disputed since "The Call" in Game 6 when a late Royals rally was started by an obviously blown call by first base umpire Don Denkinger. In the 1985 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, Jorge Orta's Royals were trailing 3 games to 2 in the Series and 1-0 on the scoreboard. Orta led off the bottom of the ninth with a ground ball to Cardinal first baseman Jack Clark, who flipped the ball to Cardinal pitcher Todd Worrell covering first. Denkinger called Orta safe, but television replays later clearly showed that Worrell had beaten him to the base. The call shifted momentum of the Series to the Royals, who won the game 2-1, and the Series the next night on Bret Saberhagen's 11-0 shutout.

It was the second Missouri-only World Series: the first was the 1944 World Series between two St. Louis teams, the Cardinals vs. the Browns.

Although the Royals lost the first two games at home, they overcame their poor start and became World Series champions for the first time, thanks in particular to MVP Bret Saberhagen and his victories in Games 3 and 7.

Game Six was on 10/26 so, as usual, you are a day late Whitey. Today is the 21st anniversary of the 11-0 drubbing in Game Seven and the lone Royals World Championship.

Denkinger is in the same category as Bartman and Buckner...they made mistakes but they didn't cost any team the series. There was still another game left in the series to recover but the Cards, Cubs and Sox fell on their face in Game 7. Blame those three all you want, they those teams had a chance to pull it out but failed. It's so easy to make excuses for why a team doesn't come up big during nut-cutting time. I'm not coming up with any BS reason for the Tigers trailing 3-1...the Cardinals are just beating them on the field.

Buckner cost his own team. Bartman was a fan who cost his own team. Denkinger fucked a team he wasn't affiliated with. They are all different.

The Sox were leading 3-0 heading into the bottom of the 6th inning of Game 7 and lost because McNamara made another horrible managerial decision. He pulled Bruce Hurst after pitching 6 scoreless innings. Why? The Cards never recovered from game 6 and got blown out 11-0. The Cubs are the Cubs. Fuck the Cubs. They'll never win another WS. Ever. The Tigers will lose this WS because they were exposed as cheaters. They are all different.
