There are some dirty college-programs out there so CFB in-general sucks? Nice take dipshit. Tell it walking.

In college the games mean more, every loss is a lesser bowl you go to. Plus you get to see much larger variety of schemes. The NFL is much more homogenous.

I'll watch pro, but my heart is with college-ball.

The NFL has neutered it's game.
Entirely too packaged.
The powers-that-be have done all they can to snuff out team and player individuality and expression.
Change the uni's of all the teams some week and you'll barely be able to identify 'your' team.
Anyone that's been around the NFL board for a while knows I like to rag on the NFL a fair amount.

I agree with your quick takes on the college game .... on the field.
It is faster pace, offers more individuality, and has more contrast and variety than the NFL.
Aslo, every week is critical in college ball.
There's more of a sense of urgency.
One loss can severely damage a team's season.

I get why some football fans find the college game more interesting.

It's a pretty red apple that's chock-FULL of maggots inside.
Myself, I don't easily get past that fact.

Cheating in college...but not in the pros? Are you trying to tell me that roids are only a college issue? That wife beatings and illegitimate kids aren't part of the pros? You must be right. The bad cheaters in college clean up their act once they get to the Sunday league.

Compared to the pros, college brings together a much broader and more unified fan base. Period. You have graduates, fanatics who have always loved the program and casual observers (sup SCfan post-Hackett). The pros have graduates of the University of Foot Locker.

I guess things like daily NFL shows on ESPN with nothing similar in college, massive media coverage of NFL as compared to college and a little thing like an entire network devoted to the NFL don't qualify as the NFL getting more hype.

College football is bigger than the NFL in certain regions like Ann Arbor, Columbus, SEC country, Austin, etc. The majority of the nation pays more attention to the NFL than CFB. Not saying the NFL is better but just which sport gets more media coverage and attention.

Poptart actually raises a legitimate point about the college game....not that most CFB fans actually care about the graduation rate or how many real students are out on the field each Saturday afternoon.....but I think that 'tart might be surprised to know that most college football programs actually recruit players who are students. Yeah, I not only said that, I mean it. I'm guessing that the University of Iowa has at least 7-8 real students (probably more) on the roster for every one of the non-students that you're talking about.....you know, the ones that see themselves as playing minor league ball on Saturday so they can get the shot at playing on Sundays and that give two shits about getting a college degree or don't possess the academic skills to get one. I think that most schools have a few of those very special and talented players who are the difference makers in getting a team to a BCS Bowl/NC game, or maybe just getting them to the next level, but have no real chance of graduating.

In the case of Iowa, I think Ferentz and his staff do recruit student-athletes (maybe that's why they haven't made it to a National Championship game) but there are schools like Miami who recruit primarily thugs/non-students and, IMO, are the schools that give the perception that college football is "a rotten apple". The NCAA does a piss poor job of policing these programs but, in all honesty, it's an impossible job. I may have my head in the sand but that's how I see it.

Anyone wanting to see college football in its purest form should head out to a Division III game and see the student-athletes out on the field busting their asses. They're the guys who are playing the game for the right reasons.....and are also the ones who might show up a little late for practice because they had a bio lab.

I'll rack that take and throw in that the same applies for ND as well. I know enough about the football program at ND to know that they do give some leeway to the football players, in terms of admissions, that do not apply to the general student population. But even so, of the top 100 players in any given year, 80-85, at a minimum, won't qualify for admission to ND under any circumstances. And once the players are here, they are expected to go to class and graduate. And the proof is in the pudding -- ND has one of the highest graduation rates in the NCAA, year after year.

Our policy for a fifth year of eligibility is among the most stringent in the nation, academically speaking. In order to get a fifth year, a player must graduate from ND in four, and be accepted into one of the graduate programs. Obviously the latter requirement is relatively easily obtained if the former requirement is met, but I know of no other school that has the former requirement.

Another point in rebuttal to poptart's take is that, while calling out college fan for the corruption in college football, NFL fan must bear some of the responsibility as well. The NFL never would have existed in the first place if not for the popularity generated for the sport by the college game. And while that's not an issue anymore, college football still acts as a feeder for the NFL. The majority of players in the NFL entered the league straight from major college programs, and certainly that's true of the overwhelming majority of high-profile players in the NFL. For years, the NFL has treated college football as a free, unofficial farm system for the NFL. Far be it from the NFL to speak out as to problems in the college game, and risk killing the goose that continues to lay the NFL's golden eggs in the process. Just sayin'.

Mace and Terry, some good thoughts.
I'll address a few of your points.

1) Not terribly surprising to see Notre Dame and U of Iowa fan drop in to comment. While there might be cheating of some kind at any high profile D1 school, ND and Iowa are definitely not the first places one would go sniffing around looking for violations.

2) RACK DIII football, Mace. It's how it ought to be.

3) Mace, you're right that MOST recruited players are 'legit' students. You're well aware of the money that a kid can end up bringing in for a university if he can be a difference-maker. BIG cashola. The players are commodities, and there is tremendous incentive for a school to score a couple/few of these kids. It doesn't take many, only a few, to make a big difference to your program. So happens that some of these 'difference-making' kids come from poor fiancial backgrounds. And even if not, I think it would extremely naive for anyone to imagine that kids are not being paid.

The financial stakes being what they are, it would also be extremely naive to think that programs don't also 'see to it' that kids fulfill their academic responsibilites by ..... cheating for them in one way or another. Absolutely without question, there are MANY kids running around on the fields on Saturday afternoons that have NO business being on a college campus. They are not students. They are ATHLETES.

I could go on and on and belabor the point, but I know that you already get it.
Most of the folks on this board know it too ....... but that NCAA Football salt lick dangling down is just too satisfying to the tongue for them to worry about the fact that there is sewage just below the surface of what they are viewing.

Terry, yes, NCAA Football is the NFL's feeder league.
I'm intriqued by the idea of a football or basketball major ..... for kids who are on campus for sports.
Stop masking it and get it out in the open.

There are other possible alternatives to the sewage that currently flows.
