With slappys like Swan in there, this becomes a compelling argument.......
On the one hand, you have a tailback who was absolutely dominant his first 4 years in the league, (with him going over the 2,000 yard mark one of those years) and was an integral part in his team notching back to back titles.
Without TD, Elway doesnt win one of those trophies, let alone both of them.
On the other hand, he only played about 7 seasons and his last 3 were brutally cut short due to his knee problems. His career rushing totals amount to around 7600 yards, followed up by his career recieving numbers of around 1280 yards.
I gotta go thumbs down on this one.

Tough to compare running backs to wide receivers. Why not compare TD to another RB who spent the same number of yrs in the NFL and is in the HoF: Gale Sayers. The numbers are fairly close.
Sayers played in 68 games, had 991 rushing attempts for 4,956 yds, averaging 5.0 yds/carry and scoring 39 rushing TDs. He had 112 pass receptions for 1,307 yds, averaging 11.7 yds/catch with nine receiving TDs. He also returned 91 kickoffs, six for TDs, averaging 30.6 yds/return, and 68 punts, two for TDs, w/ a 14.5 yd average.
Davis played in 81 games, had 1,655 rushing attempts for 7,607 yds, averaging 4.6 yds/carry and scoring 65 TDs. He caught 169 passes for 1,280 yds, averaging 7.6 yds/catch with five receiving TDs.
Davis ranks 49th in career rushes, 41st in rushing yards, and 35th in rushing TDs. Sayers does not rank in the top 50 in any major category, and never played on a championship team. While Sayers had a better yds/carry average, Davis scored 26 more TDs while playing in 13 more games. The yds/carry average was likely brought down due to many short-yardage TDs.
So is Sayers in the Hall by virtue of his special teams play? As running backs, Davis gained 2,651 more yards on 664 more carries in 13 more games, while Sayers gained 27 more yards on 57 fewer catches as a pass receiver. Sayers was an electrifying kick returner, gaining 3,172 yards on special teams. Sayers didn't have the luxury of playing with a HoF QB, either.
Based solely on these numbers, it would be hard to deny that TD should be inducted, though prolly not on the first ballot. But it wouldn't surprise me if he never gets in.

A brilliant player -- as exciting as they come.
Just SO brief a career though.

In support of Sayers one would note that he played on some pretty .... blah .... teams in his short career.
He did a lot of his damage on his own.
Davis, on the other hand, was blessed to play on some VERY good teams in Denver.
In particular, he played behind a super O-line.
Also, we saw that after he left the Mules were able to plug in other backs who also put up numbers which were quite impressive.
To my way of thinking, Davis is a near-miss.
