I am not Jewish...
I went to a Jewish Funeral today and at the gravesite.
We used a shovel to shovel some dirt onto the casket.
Each family member and friend did this.
The intersting thing was first, you used the reverse side of the shovel.
MyJewishLearning.com wrote: Two customs associated with filling the grave are 1) to use the convex side of the shovel and 2) not to pass the shovel hand to hand, but to replace it in the earth for the next participant, "lest death be contagious."
Does any one know the meaning of using the reverse side of the shovel??

Saves on wear, the shovel lasts longer.
And no-one will know you've actually done any work.

They can return the shovel after the funeral?

Sorry, as funny as that was.. it was not the winner..
The winning response comes via PM from Abraham Schlockenstein..
"to show the antithesis of death to life and that this use of the shovel is different to all other uses"

I think your antithesis is quite in line with my thesis.

No, it's so you can pile on the Palestinians in the wake of the U.S. elections.
Hey look, it's Bibi, piling on a little dirt with the other side of his shovel.
And here's the weasally Ulmert, dripping genocide with the "most friendly president to Israel ever," the sputtering Chimp.
And here's the former bar-bouncer from the Ukariane, Lieberman, ready to pile on a whole heap of dead sand with his black shovel.
Desperate men deal desperate dirt.

I went to one recently.
They handed out souvenir caps to the men, but we had to give them back once the service was over, which was kind of a gyp.
One part of the ritual involves the mourners tearing and ripping their clothes. My bro-in-law looked like he caught his tie in a paper shredder.

Jews going Indian giving? That's one hell of a cross cultural polination we have going on.

My 11-year-old is a bit of a pack rat and he was bummed that he had to give back the beanie.
