Throw some names at me
For those of you that follow the career arcs of pro or college coaches, I'm interested in defensive coaches who may be looking to move.
I have a feeling that ND DC Rick Minter and DL coach Jappy Oliver will be "encouraged" to find other employement this offseason. ND is in desperate need of a good DC and two good position coaches at LB and DL. Obviously, one of the positions can be the DC's area of expertise.
They also need to be good recruiters. These two are stiffs.
So, for anyone that thinks someone from your school or NFL team may be looking to make a move, let me know some names.
Obviously things like "Romeo Crennell is going to be fired, he should join up with his buddy Weis" is fucking stupid and would never happen.
Is there anyone out there who is due for a promotion and would make a good DC at a major D1 university?

Larry Johnson Sr. is an excellent recruiter, and he develops linemen very well. I don't know how he'd do with calling plays - not that I have any reason to think he'd be bad at it. PSU will be very lucky to retain LJ and also Ron Vanderlinden for the next few years. Vandy has shown similar greatness working with the LBs.

But are those guys dyed in the wool PSU men, or would they be willing to leave if given a promotion? I don't think either would take a latteral move to ND just to hold the same title they have now.PSUFAN wrote:Larry Johnson Sr. is an excellent recruiter, and he develops linemen very well. The next few years will tell. Obviously they can stay comfortably at PSU, but if they want to move up from where they currently are, they will have to coach elsewhere. One of them will probably serve as DC under Tom Bradley after Joe retires...I imagine one of them will move on, particularly if a major U comes calling.

You had to include "good".Killian wrote:Is there anyone out there who is due for a promotion and would make a good DC at a major D1 university?
Anyone in Nebraska would be happy to render the services of one Kevin Cosgrove.
More of a lateral move, but not everyone can have the 77th ranked defense in the nation.

It's certainly not out of the realm of possibility.
That would be a step down for Crennell.
sc, I think Weis would make the call, but I'm not so sure Pelini would make the move. I would think he would be a HC candidate at some other schools.
Sam,
What's the word on Kines? I love his defenses at 'Bama. Would he be retained or will he be looking?

I agree. But that said, I don't think there's quite the same field of openings that there have been in years past. Right now, I think the only openings at the BCS level are at Miami, Cincinnati and Iowa State. UCLA might open up later as well. But I think that's it.Killian wrote:sc, I think Weis would make the call, but I'm not so sure Pelini would make the move. I would think he would be a HC candidate at some other schools.
Edit: Oops, forgot about the 'Bama job.
