Roughing The Passer

Post by Nixhex »

The NFL seriously needs to revamp the way they interpret this rule. There are just too many examples of the rule being implied when it wasn't necessary. It's also causing players to be less agressive. They are more worried about being flagged than actually sacking the QB. I'm all for protecting the QB. I understand their importance to a team, etc. However, the NFL has gone to far on this one. Not to mention they aren't consistent when calling this penalty. One guy barely gets touched and it's called. Another guy gets hit helmet to helmet and late but no flag. You know the only guy a defensive player can really tackle and not be worried about a penalty is a RB. I guess the NFL don't give a fuck about them.

What is the solution to this? I think it's really fucked up the game this year.

You say it needs to be changed, but then claim that it's inconsistently called (no argument there). Is it the rule that's the problem, or how it's called? What you neglect to mention is, what should it be changed to (assuming that it would be called consistently if it was)? Would it work the way it is now if there was any consistency?

I can't remember who I heard say it, but a modification of the rule to be like a facemask (5 or 15) allows the ref to protect the QB, but also not always have to jack a guy for 15. Last night's was a bogus call. The call against a Cowboy roughing Petyton, can't remember which one, was even more BS. Wasn't even good contact. It was a shoulder after the play. Yeah, it could have been avoided, but it sure as he wasn't "roughing". Hell my Grandma could take that much contact.

The problem is more a matter of officials who are either incompetent, crooked, or both- and a Supervisor of Officials who is both.

The guy who called the roughing penalty against Green Bay last night should be fired publically today for incompetence.

Same for the Ref who changed the call to illegal forward pass in the San Diego game when the initial call of a fumble was clearly the correct one.

Call a press conference and fire the fucks. Only way to bring credibility and integrity back to the NFL

Doesn't an incidental facemask carry just a 5 yard penalty (no automatic 1st)? If so, I doubt that would be enough to protect the QB the way the league desires. As a defensive player, on any 3rd and long, I'm going to hit the QB with the sole intention of seeing the play on ESPN's Jacked Up! segment.

That being said, I don't like the direction the league is headed. The rules are becoming too strict on the defense. I hope they don't "Euro-ize" the league the way the NHL ruined hockey.

It will on third an 4! Point is, there needs to be degrees. Bumping into a QB shouldn't be 15 fucking yards. Hell even Theesman* thought that call last night was BS and he is the "Jacked up" poster boy!

I agree there needs to be degrees.

Btw, speaking of retards... last night Kornholer brought his worst game of the year to the table (and that's saying something!) and Kimmel in the booth made for the worst MNF broadcast... Ever.

Bring back Dennis Miller. Bring back Boomer Esiason. Do... something!! For the love of God!
