It isn't total horseshit at all. There absolutely was uncertainty in Iran over how Reagan would react to the situation once he took office. Mostly due to Carter's hysterical campaign rhetoric painting Reagan as some kind of violent, racist cowboy who would think nothing of plunging the world into thermonuclear war.

iran had more immediate problems and they had been looking for a way out of the hostage crisis. Ronnie on the horizon certainly was an unknown threat they didn't need on top of the war they were already fighting, but neither he nor his administration was involved in the whole deal.

makes a nice story, though.
