ESPN's "Case for the Heisman" segment...

They sat and, at the beginning of it, talked about Troy Smith's stats, and basically sucked him off for a few, and then got sheepish when they were listing Brady Quinn's stats... which, are, by the way, better than Smith's. (About 700 more yards and 5 TD's passing... Also, Smith only rushed for 165 more yards than Quinn, and has fewer rushing TD's (2 to 1) than Quinn.) I'm not campaigning for Quinn or anything, but ESPN is acting like Smith should be a foregone conclusion, and, while he may, in fact, BE such, it's because of them, not because of the numbers... other than that whole 12-0 number. That's kinda important, I suppose.

Also, if McFadden is a Heisman finalist with 1,557 and 14 TD's, then why isn't AD getting invited? 935 yards and 10 TD's in only 6 games... (and another 127 and a TD receiving...) I think he deserves an invite if for no other reason, because every single one of these "Heisman finalists" needs to be thanking the Lord for hurting AD's shoulder. None of them can stake a claim to this trophy if AD's healthy. None of 'em.

Woulda, shoulda, coulda. If Mcfadden was healthy he would have had close to 2000 as well. Staying healthy is big part of the game. AD is a sick talent when he is on it, just seems he cant stay healthy.

A writer for the New York Sun Times made an interesting point w/r/t the Heisman. He was making a case for Quinn (which I'm not) and brought up this little tid bit:

Until about 21 years ago, it was understood by seasoned observers that the quarterback for the no. 1 team in the country was seldom a legitimate contender for the best player in the nation, if only because if a team was good enough to be ranked no. 1, it was difficult to accurately assess the quarterback's contribution. Before Florida State's Charlie Ward in 1993, Notre Dame's Angelo Bertelli in 1943 and Johnny Lujack in 1947 were the only quarterbacks for no. 1 teams to win the Heisman. Virtually all the other Heisman winners at quarterback, notably Navy's Roger Staubach (1963), Florida's Steve Spurrier (1966), and Stanford's Jim Plunkett (1970), won their Heisman because of, not in spite of, playing on teams that weren't national championship contenders. Their statistics were thought to be accurate reflections of their own abilities rather than their teammates'.

He worded his article poorly, because Geno Toretta won it in '92 while Miami was ranked #1 (they lost in the Sugar), but he does have a point. This award basically goes to who the voters think is the best player on the best team.

There's a big difference between injured and hurt. McFadden may have been HURT, but he wasn't injured. He played in every game this year...

5 yards a carry is not all that "ridiculous".. Billy Sims lost the Heisman to Charles White in 79 averaging almost 8 yards per (which was 2 yards more than White).
