You know what I'm talking about. Next week. HUGE GAME. For the first time since the origin of Smack-Chat WSU's got a team worth posting about (we'll see).
And no save bandwagon smack cause NONE of you would post on behalf of a team coached by Kevin Eastman or Paul Graham either.

Both games vs. the Wa. schools should be tough contests...
Way too early to judge the season, but I can't remember anytime the Pac looked this good, this deep...hardly any breathers....
Your advantage is that we play you AFTER playing Washington....and AFTER you play what's as close to a breather (SuC) as this conference has....
Bruins are NOT going through conference undefeated, but I do think we take it and run with a #1 seed....

Way to clutch up Bruins.
But y'all in this forum will have to deal with the Q for the rest of the season. WSu is good. Really.
Just take care of bidness vs SuC.....

I don't know, is little Kent going to take a "recruiting" trip to Mexico with his mistress like HIS daddy?JayDuck wrote:Is little Bennett going to go 0-fer Kent, like his Daddy?
Nice win v. UCLA.
In case you were wondering, Seer, Kevin Love has silenced the "he's already reached his full potential" doubters, and last I saw, was averaging about 32 and 21, along with about 8,000,000 blocks a game(or something like that).
And for the Duke fans, Kyle Singler appears to be developing the "killer instinct" that his critics claimed he lacked.
The fact both of these two players are leaving the state should be viewed as a massive failure by Ernie Kent.

I got 99 problems but the 'vid ain't one
As much as I've wanted Ernie Kent fired after the past couple seasons, I don't think you can really call Love going to UCLA and Singler going to Duke massive failure on his part.
Its no different than Marcus Williams going to Arizona and Marvin Williams to North Carolina (both from the state of Washington). It's not Romar's failure, its the fact that those are some of the most storied programs in college basketball.
We are fortunate when we get kids away from those schools (Like getting Malik and Maarty, when UCLA wanted them), not failing because we don't.

Sure I can. It's not so much that every hot recruit should stay in-state(even though they should), but...
Well, put it this way -- when the local sports radio interviewed Love last season, they asked him about Oregon. I thought it was very classy of the young man to do as good a job as he did choking back the laughter. The "insiders" went on to explain later that Kevin Love not only didn't want to go to Oregon, but he never wanted to be in the same freaking room as Ernie Kent ever again. Apparently, Singler has similar thoughts on the matter.
I mean, c'mon -- those are "one-and-done" players...like it matters where they go to school.
But yeah, when the in-state recruits laugh at what a jackass the head coach is...that's a "failure." He failed Golden Rule #1 of Sales. Once you fail Step #1, it doesn't matter how you execute Steps #2-# Infinity. You still failed.
Hell, the guy's own kid won't play for him....HELLLLLO?

Yeah, well part of your problem is that you are believing the "insiders".Dinsdale wrote:

The "Insiders" have been claiming after each of the last two seasons that there was going to be a mass exodus of players transferring, and that they can't stand Kent. Nobody ever quit and have only had positive things to say about Kent.
The Insiders also claimed that Phil Knight, hates Ernie Kent and has been withholding arena funds until he leaves.
Instead, this is the scene from Saturday
![Image](http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p146/MrGlass13/knight.jpg)
The insiders are full of crap. I've heard plenty of rumors, from people close to Lake Oswego (I grew up, on the Terwiliger side of Wilson High School), that said that Kevin never has had a problem with Ernie Kent. Stan Love (who is a total prick), is the one with a problem with the coach.
Singler was still considering us, up until his commitment to Duke and his family is close with the Leunen's.
It might be considered failure, if he still wasn't able to recruit. But, he landed the top point guard on the West Coast, in Kamyron Brown and one of the top Wings, in Drew Viney. But yeah, when the in-state recruits laugh at what a jackass the head coach is...that's a "failure." A lot of this stuff has been seriously overblown. It doesn't matter where you get your recruits from, if you get good ones. And he's still getting good recruits.
People were pissed that Love didn't go to Oregon, after all his hype over the past 5 years. And they needed to blame somebody. But, the top players in the state are still, very much, considering Oregon. The best junior, in the state, Harthun is being recruited hard by the Ducks and is in the mix.
And please. As if Jordan's playing has anything to do with his dad. He has no future in basketball, period.
JayDuck wrote:I grew up, on the Terwiliger side of Wilson High School
Yet have managed to forget how to spell Terwilliger...aka Sideshow Bob Street.
Sure, not every recruit is going to stay. But look at some who have gotten away during Kent's tenure -- Mike Dunleavy, Salim Stoudamire(who had character issues, sure), Aaron Miles, Brandon Bishop(flamed out with an injury, but was a hot recruit)...and the list goes on...
Including Ime Udoka...who last I checked, was on a starting roster in the NBA.
Heck, Oregon could field one hell of a team just by recruiting Democrats and Generals.
You were a Wilson kid, Jay? I grew up a few miles west of you. Wilson found the bucks to put in a bitchin new swimming pool - btw. Not sure how useful an outdoor pool will be during the school year, but they've got (another) one(which I may or may not have done a little work on).
I got 99 problems but the 'vid ain't one
Anyway, as someone who follows high school basketball heavily, I can say that none of those you listed were "misses". Dunleavy was a transplant, and never an Oregonian. Only played in the state for a year and never had Oregon on the radar. I suppose he's the "closest" to a miss, though.Dinsdale wrote:

Aaron Miles had a good relationship with Ernie and would have gone to Oregon, but Luke Ridnour was a freshman, when he was a senior. Miles was a McDonald's All American, too, and wanted to be the primary point guard, not sit behind another McD's AA for a couple years. And the Rid get was way better than the Miles loss.
Salim Stoudamire was never recruited, or offered, by Oregon and was absolutely the right call at the time. Sure, Salim turned out to be a stud, but I never would have imagined it, after seeing him play in high school. He didn't even have a good shot in high school. I went to go see him play a few times (I went to Wilson with Damon Stoudamire, though I was younger than him so never played on the same Varsity team). The first two seperate occasions I went to see Salim play, he was suspended both times. I finally got to see him flame out of the first round of the high school tournament, a couple times. You
Brandon Brooks (you meant Brooks, rather than Bishop) was a similar issue. GREAT talent though. quicker than Aaron Brooks. But, he was major trouble in high school and everybody close to the situation new that he had ZERO chance of getting into school out of high school anyway. And he was a point guard as well, and that was the year that we got Rid and Jackson. Again, much better pickups than Brooks.
As lousy of a game coach as he is, Ernie's been a great recruiter. I mean, seriously, Oregon's had 3 McDonald's All Americans, EVER. All three recruited by Ernie. And, honestly, he's been pretty damn good as a talent evaluator too. Nobody else offerred Tajuan Porter, and Ernie's found some pretty good diamonds in the rough over the years.
It sucks that Kevin Love is leaving the state, and staying in the Pac-10. And yeah, I wouldn't say that Ernie is blameless, in that. We had a chance, with him, early on. But from what I understand, it was more about playing to Stan Love's ego, than anything Ernie was doing as a coach, that lost him. And Stan Love's a prick.
Yeah, we used to break into the old one in the middle of the night. Don't know what we were thinking. It was cold as shit, but we were drunk. Who cares. It was just an easy way to get drunk girls to take their clothes off.You were a Wilson kid, Jay? I grew up a few miles west of you. Wilson found the bucks to put in a bitchin new swimming pool - btw. JayDuck wrote: Brandon Brooks (you meant Brooks, rather than Bishop)
You are correct, that's what I meant. Damn, wasn't that dude something else in HS? If nothing else, a great character in the drama this is the power struggle between Jeff and Grant for big-talent-dominance...but not this year. Now, Brandon's big claim to fame is being that guy who threw the ball out of the vrowd to Freddie Jones when he won the dunk contest.
I'm picking my brain trying to remember that farmboy-beast's name from (I'm pretty sure it's) Canby. A few guys aren't getting much pub this year, even though they rock. But that dude's not going to Oregon, either. He opted for Texas, which is fairly vomit-inducing.
This year isn't quite as exciting as some. The two-horse race is taking some of the luster off. A few weeks ago, one of the local hacks had a column about "should we even bother playing the 6A regular season? What's the point?" Can't say I disagree....the two studs easily led their teams to the finals as juniors, and both have improved a bunch. Still couldn't get past Oak Hill Academy in the Les Scwab, though(what a great tourney that's become in such a short time).
One of my bestest sports-watching buddies was a backup PG for Jesuit(who haven't managed to purchase hoops titles every year...yet). If I remember right, he was a senior when Damon was a freshman, when they played. My bud says there's a reason Wilson waltzed to the championship, and believe it or not, there's a reason he lead his team to Final Fours and ended up in the NBA....because school was in freaking session when he took the floor.
Loves me some HS hoops. Heck, I went to the tourney instead of school in...I guess '85(I had quit playing hoops by then, although I took the basketball "classes" in PE and played with several of the varsity guys...who I generally mopped the floor with)....when, if memory serves correctly, our highly touted Apollos lost to....Wilson. The Wilson guys were quite cool about it, and took a few of us outside a fire exit at Memorial Colesium(The Glass Palace), and got us really stoned. Pretty fun day.
Kevin Love is SICK-btw. And Singler has found a new appreciation for throwing it down in guys' faces...which is nice. Dukies are going to love the guy...kind of a far-more-athletic version of Dunleavy(who I thought lived with his mother in Bend, or some shit like that, before he went to Jesuit?).
I got 99 problems but the 'vid ain't one
I was a freshman, when Damon was a senior at Wilson. I was on the freshman team, so was at every one of the Varsity games that year. 28-0! I wouldn't be suprised if he didn't go to class much, but I don't really know. He was a Teacher's Assistant for my Weight Training class, though, which has got to be the easiest "class" you can take.Dinsdale wrote:JayDuck wrote: One of my bestest sports-watching buddies was a backup PG for Jesuit(who haven't managed to purchase hoops titles every year...yet). He was a sick, sick high school player. Simply ridiculous. There was no question that he would be a star.

Another friend sat next to Gary Payton in a couple of classes at Oregon State. He said Gary Payton, NCAA Player of the Year, bore an uncanny resemblance to a short Asian girl.

And speaking of local recruiting(although it's football) -- in a very strange twist, the best 6A QB over the last two seasons, Connor Kavanaugh(player of the year last year, all-state QB this season) of Lincoln(I'm sure being from Wilson, you must love those guys)...
apparently, no colleges actually ever contacted the guy.
WTF?
Sure, he's only 6'0", but no one contacted the guy?
I guess he walked across the street and had a chat with Tim Walsh, and got himself a scholly out of the deal.
Walsh and Co. are in the process of building an absolute 1AA BEAST these days. Lots of recruits, and lots of money and promotion going into the program. Too bad they couldn't get Paul Weatheroy(Jesuit) to stay in town. Only drawback is he's weighing in at 185 these days...but he's 17-18 years old. But...he's a smart kid, and has his colleges, from what it sounds like, narrowed to Boise State(ARGH!) and Princeton. I suppose if he has no ambition of being a pro football player, and is looking for a free education, that one's a no-brainer.
Also, Linfield is looking at a pretty impressive crop of recruits(D3 schools don't give scholarships, right?). I guess winning championships and being the winningest program in college football history will do that.
Don't know if you noticed -- University of Portland is trying to build up their hoops program, back to "old days" standards or better. Problem is, they went the UNLV gangsta route to do so...at U-P. A couple of their best players are suspended(due to legal problems, I believe). THAT is funny to me. You wouldn't believe how U-P is trying to sell hoops tickets on the radio these days(you live somewhere else now, if I remember right?). I think they'll sell you two tix for like $5 or something these days...a bargain at half the price.
Ahhhh....local sports chat. Beats the hideous crap posted on oregonlive.com.

The PIL has stunk it up at football for a looooong time. Cleaveland still sucks-btw. A friend of mine rushed for 330 yards and 6TDs against them...in the first half(he sat out the second). He was almost The Man that year, except that was the year of Luke Staley.
They changed all of the divisions this year. What was 4A was divided into 5A and 6A. I think that 6A is for schools over 2000 students, if'n I'm not mistaken. The perennial powerhouse league, Metro League, now has 6 whole freaking teams, I believe. Not quite like the Old Days. And there's been some weird shakeups at Jeff, and their enrollment is dipping to 4A or 5A numbers. Weird goings-on in the PIL these days...probably not what Damon had in mind when he saved the PIL from doom.

Sin,
Sean May, Rodney Carney, Luke Zeller, Josh McRoberts, Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr, Luke Harangody, etc. during the Mike Davis error at IU
"Our staff is going to ensure that anyone who attends this University and wears the Indiana uniform will make this privilege among their highest priorities and not treat the opportunity as an entitlement,'' Crean said in a statement. But, as Jay said, he(if by "he," you mean Phil Knight) recruits out of his mind. This season, it seems like he's finally letting his players play, and coaching to take advantage of their skillsets, rather than the skills he wishes they had. About time, since this is year 3 for an off-the-charts recruiting class.
I have a hunch UCLA and Oregon aren't done squaring off yet...probably at least three more games to go...and maybe another in mid-March(GOOOOOPAC!!!!).

Common percetption was that when Greg Graham left, our best strategist and teacher was gone from the bench. Maybe Ernie is finally learning to live life without Graham.
