Bowl "records" and "greatest" hyperbole

Post by RadioFan »

Is it me, or is anybody else noticing this shit?

"That run was the longest in the history of the PetroSun Independence Bowl!"

Or ...

"That catch was the longest score in the history of the Brut Sun Bowl!"

First of all, nobody fucking cares who the Goddamn sponsor of the bowl is. What? It's Brut and not Mennon? Fuck that, I'm not watching.

Second, is it really a record for the insert sponsor here ____ bowl, or a record for the bowl name? Ala is it really a record for the PetroSun Independence Bowl, or the Independence Bowl? And if so, if said bowl has only been around for the last 5 years or so, how meaningful can it possibly be?

Third, are the networks paid every time they say the sponsor's name? Hey, this is important. After all, we are talking about "meaningful" tradition here.

I distinctly head the phrase "one of the most legendary Sun Bowl games.....".

thereby establishing a plurality of "legendary" Sun Bowl games as assumed in the annals of the history of sport.

but, you are of course 100% correct. it is truly absurd.

I believe Tony Temple set the record for most rushing yards in the Sun Bowl which has played for like 69 years now w/o a sponsor.

So that didn't suck, and is indeed a meaningful record.

What sucked is that he should have had even more yards and actually won the fucking game if they had handed it him more.

Exactly, brother.

I can understand if it's the Rose or Orange, since those games have been played for many decades, but to insert the sponsor's name into it makes it inaccurate.

Also, for these early- to mid-bowl season games, where you have teams that are 6-6 or 7-5 or 8-4 playing each other ... come on.

It'd be like on this Sunday, the announcers suddenly deciding that they need to brush up on every record ever set when the Browns play the Texans ... in Reliant Stadium, one of the most "meaningful" venues in sports, no doubt.

Not sure what that means Indy, but I'll check out some Seinstein the next time I'm at the store.

Oops, hold on. I think Seinstein may have set or is about to set the bullshit.com bowl record for the longest KO return then a fumble for a safety.

Where's my media guide?
