I got the phillips 50 inch flat screen HDTV. Also has this feature called ambi light. Hooked it up with Directv with an HD DVR. Surround sound system gets hooked up next week sometime. I compared prices and read reviews on C-net, and then went to the various local stores. Best Buy was offering a deal. If you buy the home entertainment install package for $200, they give you $400 off the TV. They also offered another 100 off the 4 year in home full coverage warranty, so I figured I'd toss that in, seeing as how the only negative review I read was about phillips servicing delays and the fact that I always get the extended warranty on big ticket items. Total price out the door including warranty, delivery, taxes, and installation of both the TV and the home theater system was about the same as the shelf price on the unit - $2,695. The picture is awesome, so far I'm quite happy with it.

The next jump up in technology was to the 5 - 6 grand range, and I just didn't see the need, given the quality and price I got for this unit. I'm not that avid of a TV watcher that I need to shell out more for a TV than Toddowen uses in minutes to suicide prevention hotlines every year, but this will certainly make movies and football worth the price.

DLP for who - you or me?

I picked the tv that had the best ratings in its price range while still having the features I wanted. So far so good. No complaints.

DLP- with the "millions of tiny mirrors"?

Great idear: millions of tiny parts to fail- one at a time, or in groups.

Damn near as close to planned obsolescense as the plasma screens that eventually run out of gas that can't be refilled.
