NFL HoF finalists

Post by BSmack »

Here's the 17 that made the final cut. I've bolded the ones I think should make the class of 2007. Remember, a minimum of 6 picks can be voted in.

Fred Dean -- Defensive End -- 1975-1985 San Diego Chargers, San Francisco 49ers
Richard Dent -- Defensive End -- 1983-1997, Chicago Bears, 49ers, Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles
Russ Grimm -- Guard -- 1981-1991 Washington Redskins
Ray Guy -- Punter -- 1973-1986 Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders
Gene Hickerson -- Guard -- 1958-1973 Cleveland Browns
Michael Irvin -- Wide Receiver -- 1988-1999 Dallas Cowboys
Bob Kuechenberg -- Guard -- 1970-1984 Miami Dolphins
Bruce Matthews -- Guard, Tackle, Center -- 1983-2001 Houston Oilers/Tennessee Oilers/Titans
Art Monk -- Wide Receiver -- 1980-1995 Redskins, New York Jets, Eagles
Andre Reed -- Wide Receiver -- 1985-2000 Buffalo Bills, Redskins
Charlie Sanders -- Tight End -- 1968-1977 Detroit Lions
Paul Tagliabue -- NFL Commissioner -- 1989-2006
Derrick Thomas -- Linebacker -- 1989-1999 Kansas City Chiefs
Thurman Thomas -- Running Back -- 1988-2000 Bills, Dolphins
Andre Tippett -- Linebacker -- 1982-1993 New England Patriots
Roger Wehrli -- Cornerback -- 1969-1982 St. Louis Cardinals
Gary Zimmerman -- Tackle -- 1986-1997 Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos

Sorry, I made a typo. It is a MAXIMUM of 6 that can get in. And with Tags on the ballot this year, it is a foregone conclusion that only 5 players will get in this year. And save your emails clones. Tags deserves to get in this year. For better or worse, his leadership has defined the NFL of today moreso than any other single person since Pete Rozelle.

So here's the deal with the 5 players I picked.

Gary Zimmerman- 7 time Pro Bowler, Voted to all decade team for both 80s and 90s.
Richard Dent- Super Bowl XX MVP, Averaged over 12 sacks a year for 10 years. 4 time Pro Bowler
Russ Grimm- 4 time Bro Bowler, Voted to All 1980s NFL team, Member of 3 Super Bowl Championship teams
Thurman Thomas- 1991 MVP, 5 time Pro Bowl, All 1990s team, over 16,000 yards from scrimmage
Bruce Matthews- Played more games than any other offensive lineman in NFL history. All 1990s team, 14 Pro Bowls (easily the biggest no brainer vote of this year)

As for Monk and Irvin, I think they are both worthy. As is Andre Reed. But in the confines of this system, they don't make it this year.

Ray Guy - no brainer

Bruce Matthews - same

Art Monk - all-time leader in receptions at the time of retirement

Paul Tagliablow - belongs in prison

Derrick Thomas - near miss

Thurman Thomas - IN

Gary Zimmerman - a persuasive speaker might nudge me to vote yea on him -- either that or a blowjob from mule fan

Character was not the issue for me with Irvin.
I just don't think he was quite good enough.
Close though, and he had a pretty impressive post-season career.

That sounds painful. You know how they all went out and got their teeth capped to appear like Elway, right? It's a wonder any of those twisted fucks can actually fit solid food in their mouths.

Btw...

Punters and kickers don't belong in the HOF. They are not real football players. They don't... count. Is there any way Canton can tell Jan Stenerud, "just kidding"?

How about we say goodbye to them by telling dickheads like Mile-Hi T and BBMarley to get the damn things re-sized before they use them.

You just need to take the board back to the way it was before the new avatar hack was installed. It works in Firefox, it doesn't work in IE. It's that simple.

Correction, it doesn't work in IE 7.0. In IE 6.0 it works fine.

I need to take the board back to the way it was? Hard to do, seeing as I’m not even a mod. And it doesn’t work in IE 6.0 either.

My picks...

Fred Dean -- Defensive End -- 1975-1985 San Diego Chargers, San Francisco 49ers
Richard Dent -- Defensive End -- 1983-1997, Chicago Bears, 49ers, Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles
Russ Grimm -- Guard -- 1981-1991 Washington Redskins
Ray Guy -- Punter -- 1973-1986 Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders
Gene Hickerson -- Guard -- 1958-1973 Cleveland Browns
Michael Irvin -- Wide Receiver -- 1988-1999 Dallas Cowboys
Bob Kuechenberg -- Guard -- 1970-1984 Miami Dolphins
Bruce Matthews -- Guard, Tackle, Center -- 1983-2001 Houston Oilers/Tennessee Oilers/Titans
Art Monk -- Wide Receiver -- 1980-1995 Redskins, New York Jets, Eagles

Andre Reed -- Wide Receiver -- 1985-2000 Buffalo Bills, Redskins
Charlie Sanders -- Tight End -- 1968-1977 Detroit Lions
Paul Tagliabue -- NFL Commissioner -- 1989-2006 I don't like the guy but his election is the biggest no-brainer in years.
Derrick Thomas -- Linebacker -- 1989-1999 Kansas City Chiefs
Thurman Thomas -- Running Back -- 1988-2000 Bills, Dolphins
Andre Tippett -- Linebacker -- 1982-1993 New England Patriots
Roger Wehrli -- Cornerback -- 1969-1982 St. Louis Cardinals
Gary Zimmerman -- Tackle -- 1986-1997 Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos

I'm on the fence regarding Thurman and Zimmerman probably deserves it but I can't get past remembering those cheating Bronco O-lines.

And your opinion on Ron Stark is....??? You know... the other dude who led the NFL in punting for 3 years and whose career avg is a full point higher than Guy's?

No person who kicks the ball for a living, nor anyone who gets into about 6 plays/game should be in Canton. End of story...

we've had this discussion at length before......

I'm one of those people that believe that players elected to the Hall of Fame should exemplify what professionalism is all about...both on and off the field.....

am I naive.....sure, but IMHO electing coked out roid freaks to the HoF sends the wrong message to those we're charged with protecting....

And what do you know about Stark, besides not how to spell his first name?

Average yards per punt is not the only criterion to judge a punter on (their career net averages are almost identical, BTW).
As Q said, Guy was the first punter that anybody talked about as a weapon for his team.
Which of those two has three superbowl rings, played in 7 pro bowls and is a member of the 75th anniversary all time team?

Apparantly many of his stats are as good or better than some other punter you'd have enshrined in Canton. Did I mention he kicked a ball for a few plays/game for a living?

To put this in perspective, I wouldn't put Vinatieri in there either. And he actually WON SUPERBOWLS and stuff...

And Shane Lechler's career avg is 2.5 yds higher than Rhon Stark's.
Geez, that is a LOT higher.
Is he on his way to Canton .... ?

No -- duh.

It just means that punting avg's continue to get higher over time.
Punters, like all other athletes, are getting bigger, stronger, and more fit.

Not only that, but Stark played the bulk of his career in a dome.
BIG advantage there.

Ray Guy made 7 pro bowls to Stark's 4, and Guy is the greatest and most dominant punter in league history.
Anyone selling differently has their head up their ass.
He was a verrah important member of three Super Bowl winning teams.

Without question.

No punter in history averaged over 5 seconds hang time.

The fucker was the only one to hit the top of a domed stadium... let alone more than once.
