(don't worry, Sahkah-haters: this deal will kill MLS. They actually think he's going to do a Pele in NASL. Thanks for taking Skeletal Spice off us)

More like a whole flight of stairs.Almost as soon as he joined Real in June 2003, Beckham said he wanted to end his career at the Bernabeu. Going anywhere else would be a step down, he said.
http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/a ... rent_id=29Signed as the jewel in the crown of former president Florentino Perez's Galactico super team, rightly or wrongly Beckham has since become associated with an era of unprecedented failure at a club that lives only for success. Worse still, he has been demoted from the role of star performer in a glittering cast to that of bit-part actor.

I say we came out ahead in this trade, you got that skanky biatch that puts on a fake English accent and charges mucho bobs for a lypshynched concert named maddona and we get to laugh our ass off at the dumbfuck LA owner that coughed up 250 mil for a soccer punter with diminished skills and simultaneously watch that abomination of a sport dissappear from our Nation.Nishlord wrote:

Oh, and by the way douchelord, if this money does miraculously hold up and this league some how doesn't flounder you'll see every decent euro fag that can kick a ball recieving their mail in America, your' bankrupt welfare state can't compete with the big boys. They're going to want to get paid too.
I hope you're enjoying the weather and the smoke in the United Arab Kingdom. 70 degrees and sunny without a raghead in sight over here.
Wow. I just don't see where paying the dude double what ARod makes is going to work out. But, maybe the Galaxy owners are banking on this signing piquing some international interest in watching watered-down American footy, in which case the sky could be the limit.
Sounds like an awfully huge gamble, though.

Like I said over in the soccah forum, David Beckham has retired from competitive football. His signing now opens the floodgates for the MLS to become NASL II.Nishlord wrote:

Nish, I have no idea whether Becks is gonna work out for the Galaxy, much less whether he's going to be the guy that blows soccer up big time over here (probably not). All I know is that whoever writes the Fiver e-mail column for the Guardian needs to become a Jungle regular yesterday (well, them and a certain bald-headed pornmonger from Nottingham, but I digress). Even that probably wouldn't blow up soccer big time, but at least it'd teach Jim and the clones that it's possible to run utterly brutal soccer smack without once inserting the word "sucks".

The deal stinks because 1) They're repeating the same mistake the Cosmos did (without any guarantee that it'll be 5% as successful). 2) The sport won't have a chance in the US without producing home-grown players, 3) the Latinos in LA want Ronaldo at the very least, 4) Beckham is a busted flush, and 5) the blue-collar majority MLS needs to get in will be turned off by seeing him poncing around with Hollywood stars.
Still, Beckham is a thousand times more famous in the US than any NFL player has ever been over here, bar OJ Simpson.

your not getting the deal, sponsors are paying over80% of becks salary. noone is going bankrupt
nasl expanded, the talent from overseas dried up, and they went into the shitters. as long as mls doesnt over expand, they could easily afford a franchise player on each team. becks was the biggest star out there, that was available, and is the key player in this move. ronaldo would be the 2nd big piece, then a couple others follow.

OK, I've tried to watch soccer (during the world cup) and I gotta wonder why they don't get rid of the offsides rule.
It's not like there is gonna be some huge increase in scoring, I mean seriously Nish - would 3-2 be that horrfic for you soccer purists to see?
The MISL used to be real popular - I went to a few Comets games and it was actually something you "watched" beacuse goals were scored - As opposed to just standing up singing songs, waving flags and ringing cowbells. The Comets used to draw 15,000+ a night to our shitty little arena. Now the Wizards draw maybe that many to arrowhead.
Sorry - but soccer ranks right there with Curling, bowling and lawn darts as the least exciting sports to watch.

And he won't be comming to MLS anyway. So what's the point? No way the best clubs in Europe are going to allow MLS to poach their top players. Especially top players who are currently World Cup winning national heroes.and del piero would be the best striker in mls, right now.
I could see Ronaldo and his spare tire coming to MLS in another couple of years. But not this year. Unless the calcium deposits on his foot are bothering his play more than anyone suspects.ronaldo also.
Long story short, it is not in the best interest of European club teams to send their best talent to the United States for any reason. Therefore, we will wind up overpaying for fading players like Beckham, just like the NASL did.
And how does the sponsor plan on getting paid back? Through loads of soccer gear purchases in the US? Through a cut of the gate? Or perhaps through appearances and promotions in other countries. Because my mind is struggling to find 250 million in soccer revenue here in the states that Beckham could account for. Much less a whole group of over the hill European talent.your not getting the deal, sponsors are paying over80% of becks salary. noone is going bankrupt
If they keep it just to one or two over the hill gang members, that might be sustainable. But no more than that. Which is something I do not have faith in the MLS owners to do. They've been chomping at the bit to make soccer a Big 4 sport in the US for the past 10 years. Once Beckham makes his initial splash, I can see the other members of MLS wanting to get a taste of that for themselves.nasl expanded, the talent from overseas dried up, and they went into the shitters. as long as mls doesnt over expand, they could easily afford a franchise player on each team. becks was the biggest star out there, that was available, and is the key player in this move. ronaldo would be the 2nd big piece, then a couple others follow.
Let me say that I don't doubt that Beckham will have a short term boost for the Galaxy. People will come to matches the same way National League fans came to Boston Braves games in 1935 just to see Babe Ruth. I wouldn't be surprised if Galaxy also books a bunch of friendlies accross the US. Maybe even one here in Rochester. God knows, if we can turn out 13,000 to watch Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach, we can probably get 15,000 to watch a washed up Beckham net a goal against one of the Rhinos' keepers. But after a while, when the crowds realize he can't perform the way he used to, that buzz will wear off. And the team and sponsors will be left looking to make chicken salad out of chicken shit.

ronaldo, figo, del piero are in their twilight years, they could easily be in mls by sept
figo contract in saudi arabia is only a 6 month deal(player option of 12 more months), he would be available in july.
these guys aren't the top talent anymore, quality players, but hitting the last hurrah years, which is why they will be available.

The general derision of this thread is targeted at the "sport" itself. That said, David Beckham can go pound sand.
Let him take his two-fifty extra-large and go sell shoes to the Euros. Trust me, B'rer: The Brothers in Compton could give a Fuck.

Hey, Barely-Human,
Don't hate David Beckham for making more money in a minute than Burger King would pay you a day.
Don't hate Europe for not being interested in your piss-poor minor league American football franchises, almost refusing to play Baseball, and being able to beat you at Ice Hockey and Basketball.
Don't hate England for being better than whatever backwater you choose to draw welfare from.
I love the reams of words expanded by the lower orders of this board on how much they don't care about Sahkah. It's easily one of the most-talked about sports on this forum. Oh, and Poptard - if it wasn't for NWA, no-one in Europe would have ever heard of the Raiders. And the handful of those who know about the NFL see them as the joke team of the league, followed by transvestites. Maybe you should have hired Beckham as placekicker.
The big mistake MLS have made is chasing after morons like Truman who hate Sahkah as much as they hate paying child support and washing their own genitals, and not a) bringing up and promoting the home-grown talent (because there's not one European player that can make a lick of difference) and b) cementing their relationship with the Latino community, seeing as they're going to be the dominant race in the US this century.
The only reason Sahkah didn't take off in the US 70 or so years ago was because immigrants were so desperate to assimilate, so they dropped the sports they played in their own country and played baseball and gridiron. They don't give a fuck about that anymore, so they want their own game in their own back yard. For example, when Dallas Burn made it a policy to attract Latino fans, they used to outdraw the Mavericks and Stars. A Mexican football team has talked about having its own MLS franchise in America.
Sahkah is in America to stay, and the sooner the MLS realise they don't have to pander to ignorant whiteys in the less educated areas, the sooner it will thrive.
As for Beckham, he's devalued his legacy considerably and should have told his missus to shut the fuck up. If he really cared about playing, he'd go back to the Premiership, drag a team like Newcastle or Aston Villa up by its bootstraps, get back into the England team and make a serious run at the European Championships and World Cup. The only thing that Beckham can do for the MLS is a huge Asian interest in it for a year or so.
