Tried Myth, wasn't terribly thrilled, although some seem to love it.
If you're looking to build a dedicated PVR, look into Freevo.
Aside from a decent capture card (Like this Hauppauge)
you'll need a relatively fast processor if you wish to capture as DiVX/XVid.
Let me know if you need any more info.

Is your ISP throttling back (traffic shaping) you torrent downloads? I got some work-arounds for for faster torrent downloads...

If you wouldn't mind, that would be great. I'm still a 'noob' with torrents so anything you suggest will probably help...Martyred wrote:Torrents is where I get all my shows.jiminphilly wrote: know a decent site where I can just dl recent tv shows.. i hate bit torrents.

If you don't mind me asking, what does that have to do with evading traffic shaping?Martyred wrote:Do you use Firefox as your browser?jiminphilly wrote:

I'm building up to something, namely a satisfying torrenting experience.
First you start with a torrent handler like Bittornado, then you mix in the torrent sources with
an awesome Firefox add-on such as TorrentBar.
Then, we'll address port forwarding if you're behind a routered-up LAN, and then we'll see if you're ISP is all cunty about torrents
and throwing the traffic shaping at you.

This is the best Port Forwarding resource I have yet seen.Screw_Michigan wrote:pretty much sounds like my situation. i've tried to read up on "port forwarding" but to no avail. any help would be appreciated.
http://portforward.com/
They have a section on how to manualy set up forwarding on just about any kind of router known to man. They also have an app for sale that automates the process. Though I can't possibly see the use for such an app myself.
I would also take the time to read El Taco's dissertation on network addressing. It will be worth it.

Well hurry on up. By the time you get to the end of this, torrenting will already be banned by the MPAA.Martyred wrote:Easy there, young one.BSmack wrote:If you don't mind me asking, what does that have to do with evading traffic shaping?Martyred wrote: Do you use Firefox as your browser?

I layed out the basics. If anyone needs any more specific instructions, let me know where you're stuck, and we'll take it from there.BSmack wrote: Well hurry on up. By the time you get to the end of this, torrenting will already be banned by the MPAA.

I was just curious as to what you had to say about evading traffic shaping. I'm not stuck. Just curious for future reference.Martyred wrote:I layed out the basics. Okay, if your ISP uses traffic shaping to throttle back speeds on torrents and such, you can tweak (some) torrent handlers to useBSmack wrote:

encryption methods to sneak past filters.
Not many ISP's use traffic shaping (so far), but mine does, and it can be a bitch.

Going back to the original topic, I tried MythTV and was fairly dissapointed. I actually ended giving up on it and just using a windows solution.
I got the Hauppauge 350 DVR card. With that card (because it can compress and uncompress video with hardware vs software, you can get away with a slightly slower machine, but with most cards, you should probably have something that is getting close to or above the 2ghz mark.
Installing from scratch can be a pain because you have to download and instal a variety of packages. I actually tried to use a pre-packaged MythTV system that people have had a lot of luck with, but for some reason, certain parts just never worked, despite countless re-installs.
I would say that if you have never used Linux, you are better off spending your money on Tivo.
