indie film netflix reviews

Post by Bizzarofelice »

recent pick-ups of old movies I didn't catch the first time around.

storytelling
film by todd solondz aka the guy that makes paul thomas anderson films seem heart-warming. film is broken up into two stories titled "fiction" and "non-fiction". The fiction part is all about how people try to describe something true through fiction, and the non-fiction part is how a true event is manipulated the perception of the person chronicling.

pros:
selma blair naked
some funny parts
stern fans will recognize the "fuck me nig ger" sound bite
really good movie

cons:
selma blair ain't got much to show off
fairly raw

Lone Star
Chris Cooper investigates a very old murder in a Texas border town. This plot a very loose outline for Sayles to show different scenes of clashing cultures; generation vs. generation, established hipanics vs. border jumpers, black vs. establishment. Kinda like an Altman film with the multiple storylines, but without the annoying rambling.

pros:
Elizabeth Pena wears some tight sun dresses.
Chris Cooper is a Mizzou grad.
scene where parents are complaining that the school doesn't teach history from the whites only perspective.
film is great.

cons:
some of the vignettes should have been pushed into the background in favor of better stories.
Elizabeth Pena, whose body you may have seen in Jacob's Ladder, didn't get nekkid.

Rack Burnt/Baked Back Row Middle.

Saw Storytelling years ago. A local, indie vid store in my old city had it. I own Happiness and was utterly amazed and also horrified by it and "Welcome To The Dollhouse" before it. I got "Palindromes" from Netflix last week and am watching it now. I actually saw the film way before HS used it on his show. I heard it one morn many years ago and laughed really loudly. Orange block was pretty stupid tho. He should recut it without the block (Lynch should do the same with Mulholland Drive too) and rerelease it. And it's "mvscal, fuck me harder." (trev, I know you KNOW about that right?)

I also got "The Brown Bunny." Chloe is a very, very nasty woman. Film was uh, interesting. Prime will LOVE the last five minutes of the movie.

I've also issued "Eraserhead" from Netflix. Got the long Lynch original cut too.

In my queue right now:

Romance
Jay and Silent Bob Do Degrassi
9 Songs
Secretary
Maria Full of Grace

I got that because the wife loves Franz Ferdinand.

turns out to be indie pron. absolutely no plot. recording of live band performances interspersed with scenes of one couple getting it on. really getting it on. not gyrating under the sheets. its like concert footage with the last five minutes of brown bunny... but for 70 minutes.

I am all for indie porn chief. I'd rather watch the first few minutes of "The Center of the World" or "Basie Moi" than an actual porn flick sometimes.

Sometimes.

Get Romance for your wife. The director of "A Ma Soeur" or "Fat Girl" did this one and I hear a good skin flick buzz about it. Even got actual porn actors in it.

If you liked STORYTELLING you need to get Solondz's most recent one - PALINDROMES.

Also loved HAPPINESS (his best work) and WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE.

Storytelling, Happiness, and Palindromes are all dandy.

Lone Star - I'm a sucker for all things John Sayles. I'm reading a book of his called Dillinger in Hollywood. I must say, it doesn't have the magic that his films do.

You people crack me up.

Following the path of indie-self-righteousness, and in that true independent spirit, seek out your fix through imdb and Netflix.

Tears, Jerry.

Don't get me wrong, I don't care much...my local economy gets a boost whether you order from Filmbaby or Netflix.

I'm just cracking up at the arrogant "indie" people not being familiar with the true "indie" distribution of "indie."

Thank you KCK.

Dinsy, please shut the fuck up. It's obvious you don't know poo about THIS subject either.

Great site you posted. If I wanted to buy the movies, I would go there. I don't, so I go to Netflix. Why is that so difficult for an old hippy like you to understand?

And, for the record, Netflix wasn't even in existence when I discovered independent films many years ago.

Dinsdale only likes Jorgen Leth films and Corey McAbee.

well, and his own "indie" films.

Irony, thy name is Dins.

There was no self-righteousness in my post. I'm aware of the ins-and-outs of the studio system, and if you read my take on the MPAA documentary you'll know I don't give a shit. When I said "indie" everyone who read it knew what I was talking about. I wasn't trying to separate myself from people who rent Jingle All the Way, just trying to speak a common language and project an idea with few words.

Once again, calm down, Dins.
