Bank of America launches credit card for illegal immigrants

Bank of America, the country's second-largest bank, "has quietly begun offering credit cards to customers without Social Security numbers -- typically illegal immigrants," according to the Wall Street Journal.

Customers can qualify for a credit card if they have had a checking account at the bank for at least three months. They are required to leave a deposit and pay a relatively high interest rate, according to the paper.

The program is controversial. Bank of America says it will help undocumented workers build good credit. But critics say one of the USA's largest financial institutions should not be helping people who violate the country's immigration laws.

"They are clearly crossing the line; they are actually aiding and abetting people who broke the law," says the spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform.

Make no mistake about it: millions of dollars are at stake.

"If we don't disproportionately grow in the Hispanic [market]...we aren't going to grow" as a bank, a company official told the Journal.

USA TODAY reported last year about the buying power of immigrant customers, including undocumented workers. Bank of America says nearly half of the nation's Hispanic households have one of its credit cards.

Smart business but wow that is shady.

Nothing new here. They were one of the banks that was known for openly soliciting illegals for new accounts in Santa Ana and other areas of SoCal with high concentrations of II's.

When they aren't courting illegals, they're charging their customers fees for everything under the sun. Used to have an account with them as well and they're by FAR the worst about this.

It'd be real easy to slam b of a, but they are not the reason 14 million illegals are here right now. It is the politicians that sold us out. Period. No way to reverse course. It is what it is. We are now a latin american country...deal with it.

no shit....one day my wife comes to me and asks me about all the service charges were being gouged for....I take a look and about fell out of my chair....fukkers had charged me a total of $65 in service fees for 1 month.......

They gouge big time. I guess they have to pay their "managers" (Customer Service Reps on the floor) that make that manager type $7.50/hr somehow.

It's amazing people are stupid enough to stay with them after seeing how you get very little for your gouged dollar.

It's the American Way of spiraling into debt.

Hell, CC companies take advantage of law-abiding citizens, why shouldn't they break them folks in proper like as well?

Who would it offend ? With them, trying to break into foreign markets, I guess it would offend potential illegal immigrants.

Meanwhile two border guards are apparently doing time while an illegally entering drug smuggler they capped is filing suit against the U.S. for five million bucks.

I get the feeling the only people wanting the illegal aliens out or in legally are, "We the people". Apparently that doesn't count.

Sure. But it'd be nice for them to share the tax burden. Illegals are purportedly enjoying the fruits of taxes.
