Mack Gets 2008 recruiting going with 7 commits
Texas held its first junior day and came away with 7 commits
Mark Buchanan OL 6-5 265 4.9 - Austin, TX
Dan Buckner WR 6-5 200 4.5 - Allen, TX
Brock Fitzhenry ATH 5-9 172 4.42 - Giddings, TX
Jeremy Hills RB 5-11 180 - - Alief, TX
D.J. Monroe DB 5-9 165 4.4 - Angleton, TX
David Snow OL 6-4 300 5.32 - Gilmer, TX
Justin Tucker K 6-1 172 4.56 - Austin, TX
Outside of the kicker I don't think there is a single commitment that will be considered less than a 4-star prospect.

Best recruiter in the nation? Based on what? He doesn't even have to recruit. He has some of the best players in the nation right in his own state that dream of playing for UT. He can field a BCS caliber team just with Texas players. I know he did a nice job at UNC before this, but that's a program that you can recruit well to so long as you aren't a complete tool.
I think the best recruiters in the country are Nick Saban, Mark Richt, Ron Zook (although we don't actually know if he's cheating or not), and Gary Pinkel. Now, you'll laugh at Pinkel but the fact is he's done a pretty damn good job recruiting considering how shitty that program is and their recruiting base isn't that great. He's a terrible coach, but a very good recruiter (same with Zook).;

Let's see....when he came to Texas we just came off a 4-7 season. We had a shit class going. He had 8 weeks to go out and recruit players to get a respectful class. His first job was keeping Ricky Williams. He did and got a Top 10 class. He followed it up with a string of highly rated classes.TheJON wrote:Best recruiter in the nation? Based on what? So he isn't is good? Why do you think they called him Mr. february for so long??? It was because he was the best recruiter but lacked in the big game wins. That too has changed.
Face it. No one worth a shit wants to play for Iowa. It is an after thought of a program.

Based on his stint at North Carolina and the fact that he has put a fence around Texas. Typically the only kids that now leave Texas, are the ones Texas doesn't want. That wasn't the way before Mack.TheJON wrote:Best recruiter in the nation? Based on what?

Good comeback, Harv....
Go to the Iowa smack. I'm not sure exactly what Iowa has to do with Mack Brown. Basically, what you're saying is that because John Mackovic did a poor job recruiting that means Mack is doing a great job. I never said he's doing a shitty job. I just said that he isn't the best recruiter in the country. The only thing he has to do is keep the kids in-state. That's not hard. Kids in Texas grow up wanting to play for UT. How hard is it really to convince a kid that's dreamed of playing there to commit?? Mackovic and Iowa have nothing to do with this. Mackovic was a poor coach (that 4th and 1 call was the dumbest decision ever even though it worked. I would have personally fired him on the spot for that if I were the UT AD), and a shitty recruiter from all accounts. Obviously, Mack Brown is doing a better job. He's smart and knows that he needs to build relationships in the high schools in Texas. That's not the difficult. Every coach in every state has to do that. The difference is Texas has a lot more great recruits than pretty much every other state. So he has a huge advantage. If you recruit in-state well, you're a horrible recruiter.

Don't mind if I do.
Back to the topic at hand.......I think Mack is the best recruiter in the land b/c A)he locks down almost every top recruit in the state, B)he busts his ass all year long i.e. 7 commits in February, C) no matter if he loses 0-3 games, he always has a Top 3 class D) He is a proven commodity at two diff programs in two different regions.
Adrian went to OU to win a National Championship. How did that work out AD?Believe the Heupel wrote:You mean like Adrian Peterson?Killian wrote:Based on his stint at North Carolina and the fact that he has put a fence around Texas. Or RJ Washington, Stephen Good, and Justin Johnson that have all committed to Oklahoma for 2008?
Mack won't get everyone. This year he got 12 of the top 20 in state. He is now up to 9 recruits. All pretty salty.

Texas is pretty stacked with young talent at both Oline and DE, losing Good and RJ hurt but not quite that bad. The one that hurt most is Johnson but he is the cousin of manual Johnson so him chosing the spooners is not a shock. Still 3 of the top 5 players in Texas is a pretty salty haul for Oklahoma. Texas is now up to 10 commits and will likely only take 10/11 more this year. Our biggest need are DB, WR, RB, DT, and another QB.

Whoever tinks this is stupid. The staff targets players and makes offers. those that want to play for Ut commit early. Those that don't go elsewhere. Funny thing is, Stopps and Fran are now starting to do the same thing.Believe the Heupel wrote:Oh, I agree Mack's a helluva recruiter and he's started out well again this year. I just took exception to the statement that kids don't leave Texas unless Mack doesn't want them.
There are lots of kids that Mack wants that leave the state. AD, Bomar, Tommie Harris, and Ryan Mallett to name a few. All went elsewhere. If he truly had the pick of the state then there would be very few kids from TExas playing for schools outside of the state. I think that most of these kids have teams that they grew up liking and others look at the opportunity to play and play early.

That's why I said "typically". And OU would be in a different boat because they are very close to Texas. I'm talking about the kids who leave the state and go somewhere else in the country. Before Mack, ND could walk in and take a ton of Texas kids. Now, the ones they get are the ones Texas doesn't want.
He's not going to get them all, but before Mack, Texas couldn't keep the instate talent at home as they do now.

From what I understood, back in May, Mack had his sights set on Mallett but wanted an early commitment from him. Mallett was very interested but he wanted to take his visits, Mack then turned his focus to Brantley and got him to commit. I think Mack would have had a better chance w/ Mallett if he would have just backed off a little bit. What do you think?Harvdog wrote: There are lots of kids that Mack wants that leave the state. Last year when Texas had it's junior day they offered Mallet and told him that he would be the only QB they offered but this offer had a time limit. (Texas does this with almost every offer) As that expiration date got close John Brantley and his dad came to Texas and recruited us, (His dad was good friends with Chizik) after their unoffical visit that he was excited about coming to Texas, Mack contacted Mallett and let him know the situation and gave him first option, Mallet was unready to commit and Texas told him they would be offering Brantley who immediately accepted--and then later dropped us :(Cicero wrote:From what I understood, back in May, Mack had his sights set on Mallett but wanted an early commitment from him. The only saving grace of the whole situation was that Colt proved he can be the man for the next 3 years and the emergence of Sherrod Harris as a backup/starter.

I would be very surprised if Shugarts didn't end up in a Big 10 school, he is not from Texas and hates it here. I haven't heard anything about Habern, the Olinemen to watch is the kid from Tyler, he is ranked around 70 on the LSR list but from what I've heard he is about 50 places too low. As far as you guys getting Good, the word is that Oklahoma had two things playing in your favor, he hates the big city feel of Austin and he loves the short drive to Norman. Congrats on a great pickup.Believe the Heupel wrote:I have a feeling that both Habern and Shugarts are going to wind up Sooners as well.
We could really use some WR in this class as well as a QB. I've heard that Landry Jones is ours for the taking, but we may also be in the hunt for Luck.
I'm surprised Jermie Calhoun hasn't committed to Texas already.
As I understand it Calhoun will probably commit shortly after his visit this weekend, as of now he doesn't have an offer.
As of right now the big instate targets are:
RB J Calhoun
WR D Hales
WR D Stonum
DE C Aghayere
DT J Humphrey
DB V Johnson
DB A Brown
DT A Dorsey
OT L Poehlman
These are the names I hear the most
I'm not sure who Texas is after at QB, the obvious name is Luck but from what I hear he might be a Nebraska lean.
National Top 100 guys that are showing interest in Texas are:
QB Darus Banks from Culver City CA
LB Nigel Bradham from Crawford FL
OL Michael Brewster from Orlando FL - Mack's first offer for 2008 son of UMinn coach Tim Brewster a former Mack assistant
DB Chris Jordan Brentwood TN
DB Burton Scott Preachard AL
OL Tyron Smith Monroe CA

somebody remind me again why Mack wanted Peterson and Tommie Harris to "leave the state" and go to his biggest rival? I thought i was reading hornfans circa 2002 there for a minute.

Losing both was a big blow, especially Peterson who probably resulted in losing the 2k4 RRS. Hell we hated losing Bomar to you guys-- At the time :DKing Crimson wrote:somebody remind me again why Mack wanted Peterson and Tommie Harris to "leave the state" and go to his biggest rival? No Horn fan ever is happy to lose guys to spooners, most would say that if we have to lose a kid we prefer to do it to a school that we won't face. If Shugarts is a Sooner lean then it is contrary to what I had heard, from the beginning he was a strong tOSU lean. It has been pretty mutual that he and Texas were not interested. Same thing happened last year with Toliver and two years ago with Malcom Kelly.

I wouldn't commit that fast if I was a top-recruit, I'd at-least take all my recruiting-trips to see what places had to offer and for them to show me a good time. Plus the "hard sell" is a turn-off for me. If you won't let me make the most educated decision I can then piss-off.Killian wrote:Mack does that with a lot of kids because he can. The more crying I read from M2tool, the more I rather listen to Imus in the morning. Mack has had 5 top 5 classes at Texas. He had the #1 class in 1999 and #1 in 2002. He has been in the Top20 all of his years at Texas.420 wrote:Yeah it can retard...Vito Corleone wrote:Well it has been working for Mack and his success can't be denied.

Thanks for making my point... texas tards.
With arguably the top college football talent in the country for the last 7 or 8 years, texas is 2-5 against OU and last year in the most important game of the year... texas couldn't beat Texas A&M at home in austin.
Cal had to put the 3rd and 4th string at the end of the 3rd quarter to keep the game from getting really ulgy against Texas A&M.
Mack Brown is a good recruiter, and a shitty ass coach.
Plain and simple.

Nice logic, you fucking idiot. It's not that A&M got up for a rivalry game. The team A beat team B, team C beat team A, so team C is clearly the best is fucking stupid.420 wrote:Thanks for making my point... texas tards.

And your argument that Brown is a "shitty ass coach" could be used for any number of coaches who recruited extreemly well but only won one championship. Holtz and Spurrier included.

2-5 against OU who won 1 MNC and played for 2 more. Yeah, that really sucks. While he was compiling his 3-5 record against Stoops and OU, he also won a MNC. He has played in 2 BCS bowls and is 2-0. He also has a 5-3 bowl record. Yeah, that is a shity ass coach.420 wrote:Thanks for making my point... texas tards.
