great link PSU. i had a buddy who saw the Eyes Adrift show here in Boulder and said it was OK. but, really, based on what i've heard I'm surprised Chris K is still alive. drugs, ya know.
i bet i've seen the Puppies 6 or 7 times......christ, in true SST spirit they were always touring. it was with some sadness the last time i moved i had to scrap my Out My Way T shirt, bought from Derrick Bostrum who was hawking puppets wares before the show in Masters of the Universe feet pajamas. this was a new year's show in OKC, with none other than the Flaming Lips opening. circa 1987-88 maybe.

I don't remember the exact year, around '87 or '88, but there was a concert at a little rattle-trap, shit-hole of a bar called the Sun Club in Tempe. It's long since been torn down, thank god, for health and safety reasons. Kee-riste, place had a giant hole in the roof right over the drum riser When it rained or when dust storms wailed in, the place became a cesspool and the drummer got trashed. The walls were all painted black and if you leaned against them you would stick.
Good times. Disgusting, but good times.
However, this so-called "venue" hosted a show where Giant Sand and the Meat Puppets opened up for Afghan Whigs. It was a hell of a concert, however, as much as I liked the Whigs, the Puppets should have been the headliner. Just a phenom' of a live band, 'specially in the small clubs.

re: Giant Sand: i like a lot of the records Howe Gelb has put out lately.

Oh yeah, you hit the nail on that one. Long Wongs was always a tight (and I mean tight) little place to cram into for a good concert in the heart of Tempe. I've seen the Gin Blossoms, Puppets, Dead Hot Workshop...pretty much all of the Tempe rock scene. Live toonz, beer, great hot wings and even hotter ASU tail....sheeeeet.bbqjones wrote:long live LONG WONGS
must have seen the puppets 10 times there alone
Sweeter 'n' Yoohoo, I tell ya'!
