Not even close. They're a nice team, but not #1 overall material. Great out of conference wins against UF and BC, and they're playing good ball especially as of late, but they don't have the overall resume that UCLA has.
UCLA has beaten, what, 9 ranked teams while still having 1 less loss than Kansas? Jeebus. Give it to those guys.

And I seem to remember that one loss to a top-50 team rather well. It was back in a bygone era, when that other team in the PAC was running away with it. Oh, those Glory days of January...which seem to be returning. March is a very good time to get over a slump.
They're ready to take down UCLA again.

TiC...
Look, I'm a Big10 guy, but seriously...OSU over UCLA? As we stand right now?
How?
UCLA has beaten nine ranked teams. Nine. OSU has only played against five, and has two wins to show for it, albeit, against some pretty solid ranked competition, I'll give them that.
Add to that, UCLA has the #1 RPI in the country. Since they both only have 3 losses, don't you look at these other factors as the swaying determinants?
How can you ignore these gaudy figures that are in UCLA's favor?

IMO it's UCLA but honestly does it matter?? I mean even if UCLA is the 4th rated 1 seed as long as they're a 1 seed they'll not have to leave the state till they head to ATL.

Being a #1 seed will be more of a reward for survival as opposed to a reward for excellence. You see teams like North Carolina and Florida losing down the stretch. Any top seed candidate that loses a few games will probably drop down a line and teams that were probably looking to be #2 seeds come next Sunday move up because they took care of their business. This isn't one of those seasons where you have 1, 2 or 3 undisputed powerhouse favorites going into the tournament. Every team has shown vulnerabilities and has stubbed their toe a few times along the way. No team going into the Big Dance is ammune to losing in the first round. Granted, a #16 over a #1 would still be a shocker because of who the competition is but once those #1s get to face the winner of the 8-9 game...I think all bets are off. You might see a team like Michigan State or Duke in that 8 or 9 line and on a neutral floor, you never know. That's why the tournament is so awesome...you'll see things you didn't think you'd ever see.

I'm not real great at projecting seeds, but I'm HOPING MSU lands an 8 or 9. I'd love to see a second round matchup with a #1 seed, because I think they can pull the upset. Although still not spectacular by any stretch, they've found much more of an identity on offense. The bench is finally starting to step up more, and as every game passes, Neitzel becomes more of a legitimate scoring threat. They're a top 5 team in the country in fewest points allowed and rebounds, so they don't need to be a beast with the ball anyway, just need to be capable. At best, I can see them making a Sweet 16 run.Shoalzie wrote:You might see a team like Michigan State or Duke in that 8 or 9 line and on a neutral floor, you never know.

So you're banking on OSU pulling a huge choke job in the Big10 tourney? If KU and OSU match results in their respective tournaments, there's no way KU will leapfrog all the way ahead of OSU.
I think if UCLA wins the Pac10 tourney, they're still deserving. But if they don't get it, (or even if they do) it's probably OSU's to lose right now. Even if OSU makes it to the Big10 Final and loses, it won't even matter because the committee will have made their selections before then.

I really don't know the significance of being the #1 seed of the entire tourney....
A weaker region? Better announcers?
As long as a school gets a #1 seed, that is all the advantage one should need....
Ucla's loss yesterday was predictable.
1. Just beat 2nd highest ranked team in conference Thursday, to clinch title.
2. A.M. starting time.
3. Pac-10 tourney next weekend.
4. Without best rebounder (Aboya) vs. a strong front line.
Still, a national broadcast, would've rather seen them win.
I'm told there is still some basketball to be played.

id much rather be a 2 or even 3 is arguable if i could play in a region where the rounds of 16 and 8 are within 10 driving hours of my campus--a la KU in STL or ATM/UT in San Antonio.....which are more than possible this year.....(both are considerably less than 10 hours).
or Illinois two years ago.
over-emphasis on the number 1 seed is yet another version of media catch phrases that substitute for thought or analysis (the state of journalism today.....).....like March Madness or Selection Sunday or Cinderella or "bracketology" or WMD or whatever....etc. it's important to reduce what actually happens on the floor to a set easily of digestible "analytic categories" for sportsfan (sports ad demographic and crossover fans who have a "bracket" etc.) who's been in a holding pattern since the Super Bowl.

and it goes without saying, that the pre-condition for successful marketing/advertising is consumer passivity.

You and me both, friend...just call them "major" conferences. We know what they're talking about but keep those hideous intials out of college hoops.
Like I said earlier and others echoed, the overall 1 seed is meaningless. The key is just to stay close to home and with the 1 seed in the West that is exactly what UCLA will get. Even if they lose their next game they'll be the 1 out West.
IMO there are only 2 #1 seeds locked up at this point, UCLA and a B10 team. No I don't think tO$U has that locked up just yet because they only have 1 OOC win that stands out and they're still 1-1 against Wisconsin. So the B10 tourney will shake out which of the two heavyweight teams gets the 1 and depending on how the other conference tourneys go IMO both could still grab 1 seeds.
Kansas, Florida and North Carolina need to go deep or possibly win their conference tourneys to grab a 1 seed.

You are right in that if tOSU wins out they will say at #1. I meant that Kansas has been hot as of late and Wisconsin, UCLA, UNC and Florida have all slipped up down the strech. Kansas has taken advantage and moved past all those schools.
UF played with fire and a ton of emotion which has been missing of late.....coinciding with clinching the regular season title with 4+ games left.
They rolled a hot shooting Tucky team. Just what we needed. I can't wait to see who shows up for the SEC tourney....it's go time!

How is Ohio State not a #1? One loss in conference play...at Wisconsin. Their only other losses are at Carolina (without Oden) and at Florida. The Buckeyes have a very good case for a top seed. Unless they loses to Michigan or Minnesota in their first game of the conference tourney, I don't see them slipping down to the 2 line.
My #1s: Ohio State, Kansas, Florida and North Carolina
