I like Romney, but don't think he can win (though perhaps secretary of commerce would be a good goal. Secretary of treasury, perhaps?). I'm not too keen on some of Giuliani's history (attorney general? secretary of state? secretary of defense?). I think, should he run, my support shall be behind Fred Thompson. Dunno. There's just something about that guy that I think is presidential. Who's with me?

Yadda, yadda, yadda.
I could be convinced to vote for Fred Thompson
I was OK with Romney until I heard him admit to being in favor of reinstating the so-called "assault weapons" ban.

Is that what you base your support on? Why don't you support someone who best represents your opinions on issues?I like Romney, but don't think he can win
Not that you seem to be concerned about issues...

I'm not very familiar with that topic, nor with his views regarding. I'd like to study it, if possible. Would you be able to give me a link, please? Thanks.Cuda wrote:I could be convinced to vote for Fred Thompson

Please allow me to answer your questions in turn.PSUFAN wrote:Is that what you base your support on? Why don't you support someone who best represents your opinions on issues?I like Romney, but don't think he can win

1. Fred Thompson, who has yet to declare his candidacy, is leading Romney in the polls. I think Romney's a good candidate, but seems to be having issues in getting his name out. I heard a commercial for him on the radio the other day and, if that's what his campaign's using, they'll be hard pressed for a nomination.
2. I think Romney's most in line with me on the issues (as per the original big three republican candidates). I also think that all the strengths that I like in him are apparent in Thompson, who has a better chance of gaining the support of the voters.
Hope that helps.

What is it that you like about Thompson? Do you know any of his positions at all?
You just think he's "presidential?"

Why is that? Do you think he would punctuate his speeches with the Law and Order "dunk-dunk"?

Seven years old, yes, but it's been a bit since he's been in senate. Pick a topic and chances are good that I agree with it. I don't totally agree with the McCain Feingold thing, but other than that, most are along the same lines as me.
Now, popsy and mikey, what is it that you disagree with him about? Why do you say that he SHOULDN'T be president. Give us an alternative. Hello?

MADISON, Wis. -- Ex-Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson ended months of speculation on Sunday by formally announcing that he's running for president.
Thompson, 65, made the announcement while making the rounds on the Sunday morning talk-show circuit, WISC-TV reported.
"I think my record shows that I'm reliable," said Thompson. "First off, you know, I have been. I'm the only one who has put together a state budget and a federal budget. And I've put together state budgets for 14 years, all of which were balanced, and all of which did not have an income tax or a sales tax increase."
While he admits he doesn't have the name recognition of some of his opponents, Thompson called himself the "reliable conservative" in the race.
The former governor and former secretary of Health and Human Services said that he's focused on his campaign strategy in Iowa, which hosts the nation's first presidential caucuses.
Thompson said he's optimistic about his prospects in Iowa despite receiving single-digit polling.
"In Iowa the polls last week came out that I was in fifth place and moving up at 5 percent," said Thompson. "So I'm telling you, things are started to coalesce and I feel very, very optimistic about my future."
Thompson also said he plans to offer a different strategy for Iraq.
He said that he would demand the Iraqi government vote on keeping the U.S. troops in the country.
Thompson added that if the answer was no, he would get them out.

No love for Romney? It's cool. Like I said, right now, I'm taking Fred Thompson first. Either would be good, imo.OCmike wrote:Anyone who doubts Fred Thompson's abilities to run this country needs to go rent Die Hard 2. 'Nuff said.
Oh, and facts and mattering and all, but if he runs, he gets my vote. If not, Giuliani is the OC front-runner with Richardson in third.

Intriguing, but I have a couple of problems with this. Pardon me if the questions sound naive, but they come to mind immediately.Thompson also said he plans to offer a different strategy for Iraq.

First, what happens if the Iraqi government says, "Screw you. We're not having a vote on this." What then?
Second, shouldn't it be the American people who have something to say about whether our troops stay in Iraq? After all, it's our kids who are dying over there.
We've already had one President thumb his nose at the will of the people about Iraq. I don't want to see another President do that also.

He's yet another grandstander who fails to name employers as culpable.
The dude had a mental health deferment during Nam. We're supposed to take his ravings seriously now?
