I'm not asking for your favorite team (I think I pretty much know the answer to that question for all the regulars here), just for your assessment of the favorite teams among people living in your area. And I'm not looking for any scientific polls, just a man on the street type feel.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say Penn State probably ranks #1 where I live. However, I will add a disclaimer to that statement by saying that interest in Penn State, as well as in college football in general, seems to have dropped off around here compared to when I was a kid. Notre Dame is up there as well, but I'll err on the side of caution, in my case, and keep Penn State at #1.

Syracuse would be #3, but a somewhat distant #3. They have potential to pass both Penn State and ND in terms of fan interest with a special type of season (see 1987 for an example), but unless they can sustain that level of play for an extended period of time, interest in Syracuse will inevitably wane.

I wouldn't venture a guess at exact rankings below that, but I think it's somewhat safe to say that each of the following programs would rank in the Top 10, in no particular order: BC, Michigan, tOSU and FSU. Pitt and West Virginia might also finish in the Top 10 around here, but I'm not nearly so certain about that.

#1(probably by a decent margin) would be U of O(I assume we're talking CFB, right?).

#2, probably the Beavs.

#3 Portland State -- not too terribly exciting a program(not from about the late 80's until a few weeks ago, anyhow), but it's the biggest school in the state, and there's more PSU grads running around here than any other school(funny how that works).

Probably some UDub-ers around, but they know better than to open their mouths or display their gear around here. There's also the Wazzu-Vancouver campus right across the river, so we see some Wazzu fans...yup, even Wazzu is looking to get away from Wazzu.

4a. Colorado State Rams (total media free pass). Nebraska is also big with CSU fans....easy to see how that works.
5. Air Force. i don't like em much, but i'm a sucka for option football.

Iowa City is all about Iowa football until it is so bad it cannot even be overrated by these homers. If Iowa football completely sucks, then there is no discussion of football in this town whatsoever, except maybe da Bears.

1,3, and 4 due to the influence of the oil industry up here. Phillips 66 shuttles people between Bartlesville and Anchorage pretty frequently, and BP does the same with Dallas and Anchorage.

The saying around here in the 80s was that happiness is defined as a southbound Okie with a Texan under each arm.

The other big saying I remember was : "Let's cut Alaska in half and make Texas the 3rd largest state."

Nebraska - Understandibly the fanbase is about 90% Husker, and since Omaha is packed full of micks due to the railroad, theres a good dose of Irish fans as well. I also see an unhealthy amount of Iowa gear around town.

The 3 pro teams w/ the biggest following seems to be the Vikes,Chiefs and Broncos.

I live in probably one of the biggest bandwagon areas of all time. If ASU starts out 4-0, Sun Devil Stadium can draw a decent crowd (but still won't sell out) and a lot of the local radio jocks will jerk each other off to memories of '96. If they start out shitty, no one even cares. ETCU is a joke if you ask me.

However, there are so many transplants out here, the different fans of different teams are always nice to see. I know there's quite a few tOSU fans and Big Ten fans out here in general. If I wear any of my Buckeye garb out, it never fails that I'll run into at least one person who is a fan or went to school there or is from there.

I would say if there's one other team that gets a lot of rep out here, it's Nebraska. Cornhusker Fan is plentiful in the PHX.

I live about a mile from Hill Air Force Base and most of the people there have lived in San Antonio for some time so that has a bit of an impact on who they pull for. There is also a ton of Weber state alumni in the area since I am about 10 miles from that school so I end up seeing lots of WSU stuff.

Yep. Largest single contingent of ND alumni are in the Chicago area, and there's a good number of subway alums in that area as well.

Btw, I meant this to be only college teams, and I thought posting this topic in this forum would make that obvious. But since others have mentioned pro teams . . .

The team with the largest following in this area, pro or college, is the Buffalo Bills. But from an NFL standpoint, it's not nearly so dominant as the Bitter Elf would have you believe. Many of the oldtimers in this area predate the Bills, and many of them have remained loyal to either the Giants or the Browns, who had the largest fan following in this area prior to the Bills' existence (although the original Browns are now the Baltimore Ravens). And the vast majority of NFL teams who have had an extended run of success in the post-merger area also have considerable fan followings in this area. The Cowboys, Dolphins, Raiders, Steelers, Redskins, Vikings and Rams all fit into that category. In fact, the 49ers, along with the Patriots, are about the only teams who had a considerable run of success in the post-merger era who don't have a huge fan following in this area. The Bills didn't really come to be seen as a regional team until they had their first taste of anything remotely resembling success in the early 90's -- prior to that, they were perennial losers and a lot of people didn't really care much about them one way or the other.

Having said that, all of the teams mentioned above have a larger fan following than does any college team in this area. This area is a NFL market first, second, third, fourth and fifth (at least). I prefer the college game to the pro game, but I'm in the small minority around here in that regard. In fact, anyone who is a fan of what bradhuskers calls "BIG TIME POWER COLLEGE FOOTBALL" would experience culture shock in picking up the Sunday sports section of my local fiswrap in the fall. Plenty of coverage of weekend local high school football games, and the weekend's upcoming NFL games. Local DIII schools will get a full article written about their game. DIA? A paragraph-long article from the AP wire sources, IF the game involved at least one Top 25 team. Otherwise, you get a linescore, assuming that it wasn't a game out west that ended too late to be included in the Sunday edition.

I think the reason this market is so heavily slanted toward the NFL stems from a few facts. Syracuse, the only school in close proximity with anything remotely resembling long-term success at the 1A level, is a private school and is considered a basketball school first and foremost. Also, most people in this area did not graduate from a school with a 1A football program. Buffalo is the only school in the SUNY system at the 1-A level. They're a relative latecomer to 1-A (I think they went to that level for the first time in '99) and consistently field one of the worst teams in the country at the 1-A level. The Bills are one of the few NFL teams with a college football-type fanbase, and I think that's compensation for the relative lack of exposure in this area to college football.

Clear front runner around here is Boise State, with the University of Idaho in distant 2nd place. Quite a few fans of Oregon and Oregon State as well.

The strange thing about living in Florida is, noone is from here. So sure there are tons of Gator fans...now, but Miami definately sucks hind tit between the big 3 in Fla., sorry Mucho, S.Fl still not with the big boys yet. But on saturdays there is a huge midwest feel to CFB. There are so many people living here from Big10 country. Much like the NFL season, there are bars that designate themselves to particular teams and their faithful gather to watch together. By far the biggest contigent I've seen is the OSU fans. Holy shit these people are everywhere. You see people sporting Buckeye regalia yearround, cars decaled, house flags waving, it's like the fuckers are following me! I also see quite a few people from my neck of the woods sporting UM liscence plates, Red Wing stickers, Tiger Hats (where were these banwaggoning whores at before last season?). There are plenty of ND fans down here, mostly the subway version, catholics from the east coast.
