Those gun safety nuts

Post by PSUFAN »

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07116/781289-100.stm
Rep. Jewell Williams said during a news conference on gun control that he would ask police to investigate an e-mail he received this morning from an Allentown resident saying Mr. Williams should be shot for supporting Rep. Angel Cruz, also a Democrat from Philadelphia.

Mr. Williams, a former police officer who has a gun permit, said he also felt threatened by a gun-rights rally Tuesday during which two participants held up a banner calling for Mr. Cruz to be "hung from the tree of liberty." The message was protesting legislation sponsored by Mr. Cruz to require gun registration and a $10-a-gun annual fee.
How dare this guy sponsor gun safety wacko legislation of this kind? Registering a gun and a $10-a-gun annual fee? Totally unacceptable. These commies want to take away ALL of your rights. they need to be lynched - Hung from the tree of Liberty.

Since when has registering guns been a safety issue?

http://www.nrahq.org/education/guide.asp
The fundamental NRA rules for safe gun handling are:

Image
1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
This is the primary rule of gun safety. A safe direction means that the gun is pointed so that even if it were to go off it would not cause injury or damage. The key to this rule is to control where the muzzle or front end of the barrel is pointed at all times. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances.

Image
2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
When holding a gun, rest your finger on the trigger guard or along the side of the gun. Until you are actually ready to fire, do not touch the trigger.

Image
3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
Whenever you pick up a gun, immediately engage the safety device if possible, and, if the gun has a magazine, remove it before opening the action and looking into the chamber(s) which should be clear of ammunition. If you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber(s), leave the gun alone and get help from someone who does.

When using or storing a gun, always follow these NRA rules:

Know your target and what is beyond.

Be absolutely sure you have identified your target beyond any doubt. Equally important, be aware of the area beyond your target. This means observing your prospective area of fire before you shoot. Never fire in a direction in which there are people or any other potential for mishap. Think first. Shoot second.

Know how to use the gun safely.
Before handling a gun, learn how it operates. Know its basic parts, how to safely open and close the action and remove any ammunition from the gun or magazine. Remember, a gun's mechanical safety device is never foolproof. Nothing can ever replace safe gun handling.

Be sure the gun is safe to operate.
Just like other tools, guns need regular maintenance to remain operable. Regular cleaning and proper storage are a part of the gun's general upkeep. If there is any question concerning a gun's ability to function, a knowledgeable gunsmith should look at it.

Use only the correct ammunition for your gun.
Only BBs, pellets, cartridges or shells designed for a particular gun can be fired safely in that gun. Most guns have the ammunition type stamped on the barrel. Ammunition can be identified by information printed on the box and sometimes stamped on the cartridge. Do not shoot the gun unless you know you have the proper ammunition.

Wear eye and ear protection as appropriate.
Guns are loud and the noise can cause hearing damage. They can also emit debris and hot gas that could cause eye injury. For these reasons, shooting glasses and hearing protectors should be worn by shooters and spectators.

Never use alcohol or over-the-counter, prescription or other drugs before or while shooting.
Alcohol, as well as any other substance likely to impair normal mental or physical bodily functions, must not be used before or while handling or shooting guns.

Store guns so they are not accessible to unauthorized persons.

Many factors must be considered when deciding where and how to store guns. A person's particular situation will be a major part of the consideration. Dozens of gun storage devices, as well as locking devices that attach directly to the gun, are available. However, mechanical locking devices, like the mechanical safeties built into guns, can fail and should not be used as a substitute for safe gun handling and the observance of all gun safety rules.

Be aware that certain types of guns and many shooting activities require additional safety precautions.

Cleaning
Regular cleaning is important in order for your gun to operate correctly and safely. Taking proper care of it will also maintain its value and extend its life. Your gun should be cleaned every time that it is used.
A gun brought out of prolonged storage should also be cleaned before shooting. Accumulated moisture and dirt, or solidified grease and oil, can prevent the gun from operating properly.

Before cleaning your gun, make absolutely sure that it is unloaded. The gun's action should be open during the cleaning process. Also, be sure that no ammunition is present in the cleaning area.
Nowhere is "registration" mentioned or alluded to.

You might want to try a source other than the NRA, given that they're the leading opponents of handgun registration laws. Not like they don't have an agenda to push, after all.

That may be true, but they're right in saying that a registration slip and a 10 dollar fee doesn't have a damn thing to do with gun safety. Of course to have an impact on gun safety statistics, you would have to register all guns and make regular gun safety certification mandatory for all gun owners. I am certain the NRA is against that as well.

The point is that they are so awash in their saliva foam that they are calling for a lynching of a rep who suggests registering guns and supporting that with a $10 yearly fee.

Responsible gun owners should not object to registering their weapons. I don't see any reasonable objection.

Well, you could start be showing me where it costs 10 dollars per gun to sign and file a paper stating that you own and are responsible for said gun. What this is is a gun tax that will be used to support a new layer of useless bureaucracy. Now combine it with a legitimate gun safety certification program and maybe we can talk.

In that case...

Responsible computer owners should not object to registering their machines or paying a yearly fee on them to the government either.

Is Rep. Jewell Williams a pussified cunt or what? “Hung from the tree of liberty” is hardly a fucking threat. Expunging the Second Amendment is far worse than the racial boogeyman.

As far as “gun safety”:

Gun Registry – Hell. Nothing says “good idea” like 6 million dead Jews. But, hyperbole aside, let’s take a look at the boondoggle known as the Canadian gun registry. $2 billion of complete horseshit. How many criminals plan on registering their guns? Does Irie Lagos register every crystal of meth he has smoked or inch of cock gazed?...uhh…bad example. Let’s move on.

Annual Fee - $10/gun ain’t shit. So we should feel fine paying an annual fee for ALL deadly weapons. Knives, shovels, steel-toed boots, Dinsdalian smack, knitting needles, crucifixes, jtr’s ginormous melon, pillows, hairspray+lighter, Douchebag’s Crew, and so on.

The point is, all you fuckers who cry bloody murder about “free speech”, the Patriot Act, “church and state”, and illegal search and seizures, always seem to be the first in line to drop trow and pinch out a Toddowen take all over the Second Amendment.

You NRA nuts are the one who shit all over the 2nd Amendment when you justify gun ownership & the lack of controls by citing only part of that amendment.

What part of "well-regulated militia" don't you idiots get?

mi·li·tia –noun
1. a body of citizens enrolled for military service, and called out periodically for drill but serving full time only in emergencies.
2. a body of citizen soldiers as distinguished from professional soldiers.
3. all able-bodied males considered by law eligible for military service.
4. a body of citizens organized in a paramilitary group and typically regarding themselves as defenders of individual rights against the presumed interference of the federal government.
I see a bunch of references to "citizens" in the definitions of militia. Aren't "citizens" supposed to be the ones protected by the Bill of Rights?

Yes.

And do you have any idea why Jefferson included the "well-regulated" part when talking about those "citizen" militias?

"Well-regulated" can be construed as "well trained". Most NRA nuts have no problem with gun users being trained in the proper usage of firearms. Gun safety classes are already required for conceal & carry licenses in the few states that allow them, without NRA condemnation. I am having trouble wrapping my puny brain around "well-regulated" being interpreted as "well-documented". It seems that the founding fathers, Jefferson included, wanted the rights and liberties of citizens to be protected from the government. If that is the case, then why would they turn around and give the government complete control over one of the citizens’ most basic means to self protection?

Now let’s entertain a realistic situation involving this debate. In order for me to purchase a handgun in Johnson County Iowa, I am required to submit a copy of my fingerprints to the local sheriff. I have never been convicted of any crime. Not a murder, not a drunk in public, not so much as a speeding ticket. Now, can someone answer to me why I am treated like a common criminal in order to exercise my Second Amendment right? (Granted, I have also been required to submit my fingerprints in order to work with the class of bacteria I do; however, I don’t recall any amendment dealing with my shitty career decisions.) I am forced to submit my fingerprints by simply asking the government’s permission to purchase a handgun. I am sure Jefferson is applauding that interpretation.:meds: The point of this is that this IS a gun registry. I may not have purchased a handgun, but the mere idea that I had the audacity to ask for permission is now on file. Does the mvscal holding up the local Kum & Go get fingerprinted in order to purchase the Glock he waved in the clerk’s face? Nope. Does the loser sitting on his couch, watching Food Network in hopes of glimpsing Giada’s boobaces, cleaning his legally-acquired Walthers become a suspect when some psycho shoots up a university classroom? Maybe. Who knows? A gun registry has a greater chance of being violated than a record of the latest copy of Blue's Clues you checked out from the local library.

Lots of people around here presuming to speak for Jefferson without having the slightest fucking clue what he actually thought, said, wrote, or meant.
