Did you know that the origins of May Day can be traced to the United States? Specifically in Chicago with the Haymarket martyrs? I didn't.

Labour unrest in the spring led to a series of demonstrations, the biggest being on May 1. On May the 4th another demonstration led to a bomb being thrown killing a policeman (hence the image of the bomb throwing anarchist with the black bomb with fuse coming out of the top), the police opened fire and broke up the demonstration but the organisers were arrested and charged with the murder of the policeman on the basis of them being responsible for the demonstration. Of the eight convicted 7 were executed (all german immigrants) and the eigth jailed for life. There were suggestions at the time that the bomb was actually thrown by an agent provocateur in the pay of Pinkertons.

May Day grew as a commeration of these events.
