Basically, the alleged arguments that government subsidies are "good business" for the municipalities they are in is a big fat fib. It's a case of business owners lying and the fans of sports teams lying to themselves (and their neighbors, whose pockets they are fleecing) to justify keeping a team in their area. If you want to keep your team in your area and use YOUR money to do it, fine. But I'd rather fans not insist that I subsidize their team owner's business with MY taxes. I love the Bills, but I was damned pissed that NYS monies went to Ralph Wilson for his stadium renovations. If it comes down to the Bills leaving if they don't get their extortion payoff....err....."stadium subsidies," then fuck 'em, let 'em go. My happiness doesn't revolve around whether some billionaire chooses to keep his team of millionaire athletes in my region.

Simply put, there are more metro areas in the U.S. which are at least arguably capable of supporting a major-league sports team than there are major-league franchises in any given sport. So the owners essentially are able to hold their area hostage, and if that area doesn't pony up, they threaten to move the team elsewhere. Much like the proverbial dog licking his balls (back to the title of the thread, how do you like that?) they do it because they can.

You might want to look at some numbers before you dismiss Paul out of hand. For two open air stadiums, he's right that they could have been built for roughly what it's costing Jackson County to refurbish your old stadiums.

If your elected officials really cared about you, they would have told the Chiefs and Royals management to build their own damn stadiums and never put the sales tax on the ballot. Not that I can blame them for being cowards. Outside of LA, I can't think of too many places with the balls to stand up to team owners when it comes to stadiums. My own home state is pouring billions into the new Yankee Stadium and New Jersey errr Brooklyn Nets project. And for what? So that NYC will have two MLB and two NBA teams? It's a fucking waste of money.
