Spinner's Top 20 List (better?)

Post by Risa »

viewtopic.php?t=24210 -- Ah, TROTSed. I put it up like that because I knew folks have the attention span of eels around here. So I figured I'd put up the first 5 in reverse order, see how it looked, then put the next 15 up. I liked the comments that were also put up, because those comments also had a story to tell... and I thought they were great commentary all by themselves. Unfortunately, my UBBing of color was for shit. I correct UBB coding, and get a message that only administrators can blah blah blah. Ah, good old TROTS. So for Radio Fan: http://www.spinner.com/2007/07/13/20-pr ... red-no-20/ with an edit for the actual list -- no reader commentary this time -- in about 15 minutes (because Spinner doesn't list them in Order, you have to click through each page to find each song. On the plus side, as stated, they do include a link so that you can listen to each song on its appropriate page).

ADDENDUM: The actual list and Spinners juvenile assessment of what each song is about.

20 Protest Songs That Matter: No. 20

In 'The Wild One,' angry young rocker Marlon Brando answered an innocent question -- "Hey Johnny, what are you rebelling against?" -- with a curt reply that spoke volumes: "Whaddya got?" Rock never settles for the status quo, teaching generations that questioning authority is a cornerstone of democracy. Here are 20 all-time declarations of independence, each spun at 45 revolutions per minute.

20. 'Get Up, Stand Up' --Bob Marley and the Wailers (1973)
Rebelling Against: Opression!
19. 'Minority' --Green Day (2000)
Rebelling Against: The Moral Majority!
18. 'We Shall Be Free' --Garth Brooks (1992)
Rebelling Against: Homophobia!
17. 'We're Not Gonna Take It' --Twisted Sister
Rebelling Against: Authority figures!
16. 'Diamonds From Sierra Leone' --Kanye West (2005)
Rebelling Against: Blood diamonds!
15. 'I Ain't Marching Anymore' --Phil Ochs (1965)
Rebelling Against: War!
14. 'Clampdown' --The Clash (1979)
Rebelling Against: Fascist capitalism!
13. 'California Uber Alles'--Dead Kennedys (1980)
Rebelling Against: Lockstep liberalism!
12. 'Little Boxes'--Malvina Reynolds (1962)
Rebelling Against: Conformity!
11. 'F--- tha Police' --N.W.A. (1988)
Rebelling Against: Racial profiling!
10. 'Allentown' --Billy Joel (1982)
Rebelling Against: Recession!
09. 'World Wide Suicide' --Pearl Jam (2006)
Rebelling Against: Operation Iraqi Freedom!
08. 'Maggie's Farm'--Bob Dylan (1965)
Rebelling Against: (Spinner didn't put one. I wonder why? what it did do was write, within its text: "'Maggie's Farm' is Dylan's uber-protest song: It was the iconoclast's declaration of independence from the very folk movement that sired him.")
07. 'Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud' --James Brown (1968)
Rebelling Against: Racism!
06. 'Boom!' --System of a Down (2002)
Rebelling Against: Militarism!
05. 'Strange Fruit' --Billie Holiday (1939)
Rebelling Against: Lynching!
04. 'War' --Edwin Starr (1970)
Rebelling Against: Vietnam!
03. 'Take This Job and Shove It' --Johnny Paycheck (1977)
Rebelling Against: The big boss man!
02. 'Fight the Power' --Public Enemy (1989)
Rebelling Against: Racism!
01. 'What's Going On' --Marvin Gaye (1971)
Rebelling Against: Social injustice everywhere!

Hi, Rich. Shall I come back as a man, you know, commit a Mulligan with this board? I don't wytch; I don't have any funny life stories about bitches/dudes/animals (sup, Filthy's Neighbor, wherever you are)/inanimate objects I've fucked; or any funny pretend stories about bitches/dudes/animals/inanimate objects I didn't really fuck. I saw the list, though, through America Online's headlines and it intrigued. It was like, alright, how did they fuck up now? And yes, they did fuck up. On the bright side, they didn't fuck up in Rolling Stone proportions because Rolling Stone would have NEVER included Ochs, David Allen Coe or my homegirl Malvina. But Rolling Stone would have had the decency of including Alice's Restaurant.

I never knew before the name of the woman who wrote 'Little Boxes', i didn't pay attention to the names in my mother's Big Book of Songs from the 60s that was on the sea green upright piano in my parents' room. All I knew is, I dug the song. I'd play it all the time (mind you, I can't read music for shit... so I'm happy that, after all these years, what I was carefully hunt-and-plunking on that old $95-at-auction upright was reasonably close to what Ms. Malvina came up with) and I used to sing it -- off-tune -- all the time around the house. So Spinner gets a pass from me, for including that song. I never hear it mentioned anymore.

Their inclusion of 'Diamonds from Sierra Leone' is bullshit. The only reason why Diamonds is Diamonds is because Shirley Bassey was gonna sue Kanye's ass for sampling her without permission. That legal threat led to one of the great openings for a video, and she forced Kanye to talk about something deeper than himself. But "George Bush Don't Like Black People" deserves to be mentioned as one of the all time great protest songs; shit, even Mos Def's "Katrina Clap" deserves to be on the list more than "Diamonds".... because "Diamonds" the video and "Diamonds" the song are two different beasts, and this list is not about the 20 greatest protest videos

I think it's telling how a reader has to school Spinner that Garth's song isn't about homophilia, it's a protest against the 1992 Riots. Y'all remember that, don't ya? The homos win -- AGAIN -- by clamping onto some shit that ain't theirs, specifically the black struggle, and trying to pretend it's all about them. Whatever, (white) faggots. Some of us can read the lines about what really was going down at Stonewall that year, no matter how y'all try to whitewash the shit into some Dorothy bullshit. I can't stand that shit. And then faggots write shit like what was written to O'Reilly's stupid ass hyperbolizing friend Rod. And then they try to destroy Isaiah Washington's life while licking Paris Hilton's ass. But let me stop.

Green Day and Twisted Sister are alright. Not 20 greatest protest songs of all time alright, but they're alright. I like the one commentarist who stated that Twisted Sister was a great anthem about the generation gap in the 80s.... except Dee Synder wasn't Alex P. Keaton. It still works. If Spinner wanted to be 'real', they would have included Enya's 'Only Time' and if they wanted to be controversial they would have included Andre and Benjamin's 'Bombs Over Baghdad'.... you know, the Dr. King and X of September 11. The Xavier and Magneto of September 11, because 'Only Time' is was turned into a song about peace, and 'Bombs Over Baghdad' was turned into a thumping protest against getting our asses beat down by 11 Saudis in 4 planes. If Garth singing a song written by someone else about the aftermath of police brutality and rioting can be turned into a homo anthem in Spinners head, then why not two songs which were also co-opted by two movements?

I don't understand why Phil Ochs would suicide because of a song Bob Dylan wrote.

Allentown has to be a little more deep than just rebelling against 'recession'. Recession isn't something you rebel against; but you can protest against the policies of an administration. Why didn't Spinner name either President Carter or President Reagan, and thus their policies? I mean, come on ... 'recession'? I mean, Spinner gets pretty damn specific in the song below Joel... so why is the Iraqi War the only war to get the specifying treatment? That's bullshit.

Say it Loud -- I'm Black and I'm Proud is less about racism than it is about a protest against Self-Hate. It's a love letter to black folks. Everything ain't about white folks. Saying it's about racism makes it about white folks. But being proud of being black is something inner. Spinner fucked up on that one. It has issues to sell.

Fuck the Police could also be said to be a protest against Police Brutality; on the other hand racial profiling goes beyond traffic stops. PE's '911 is a Joke' will make it on Spinner's Top 100 protest songs next time, I guess. Then again, the late 80s and early 90s had superior protest songs coming out every orifice. It was awesome (to quote MC Chris). Who gets the glory though? Some grunge bullshit.

Back on topic, Spinner's one word distillation of Billie Holliday's interpretation of the Jewish written Strange Fruit is insulting, to me. I can't quite put my tongue on it, but it's insulting even as it's telling the truth.

Johnny Paycheck/David Allen Coe is a racist biatch. I guess some of his other more popular 'protest' songs aren't safe for the ears and minds of little Spinnerites. In light of that need, 'Itty Bitty Titties' should have been included, because it's a protest against unreal body images for women. Kind of like Kanye West's 'Throw some DDs' from last year, but more crude.

Speaking of........... there are no protest songs representing women's struggles, except Malvina's 'Little Boxes'. That's wrong. They could have at least thrown some Tori Amos or Ani DeFranco or somebody up on the list.

Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On' versus Marvin Gaye's 'Mercy Mercy Me'. That's a toughie. I guess there are a couple inclusions on the list that could have been removed so that both could be listed. (EDIT: wait, are those two titles for the same song? yikes, i guess they are... hold on have to hum.....)

The biggest omission is 'We Shall Overcome'. No excuses. 'Kum Ba Ya' could make the list if Spinner were being commercially subversive. They're not.

And finally, I think Spinner put Bob Marley so fucking low intentionally. They did pull a Rolling Stone on that one. Everybody passes the list around like, HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL NO THEY DID NOT JUST GO THERE! Spinner gets more hits, cha-ching.

Mike the Lab Rat, your thoughts?

Yo, Papa Wolf, you've been around. What were some of the great protest songs of your day? What songs were folks singing during the Punic Wars? (I don't think they had protest songs back in Luther's day, it was all arboreal beatboxing for sex, and candy. yeah. mm hmm.)

Off This Shit List.

...and a better Dylan song than "Maggie's Farm" would have been "Masters Of War"...

Henry Phillips has an excellent protest song about Risa that gets regular play on the Bob and Tom show: “She’s Talking Again”.

Run DMC's "You Talk Too Much" was meant just for her...

I have an 8-minute commute to work. I bounce between Mike and Mike, and Bob and Tom, searching for the evil of two lessers. I only listen to Bob and Tom in hopes of catching their guests, some of whom can be quite funny.

I hear ya, although it's usually not quite that bad for me, on a good day anyway. Winter? Now that's another story altogether.

On occasion, I've had night court in places where it took me 2 1/2 hours to get home afterward. That was without weather-related traffic delays, btw.
