Just drove through the part of town that all those names came from, actually. Although as far as the various neighborhoods having "official" names these days, "The Alphabet District" is pretty freaking ghey. Although the street names all go south-to-north in alphabetical order, A-V, but it's still a ghey name. Those same street names provide most of the last names of Simpsons characters(although "S" isn't Simpson Street). Back in the Old Days, we simply referred to that as Northwest, since the Alphabet covers most of that relatively small section of town.

I always assumed Springfield's in Indiana, because both Springfield and Shelbyville are in Indiana -- matter of fact, there are two Springfields to choose from -- and an argument could be made that the prototypical 'anytown, USA' (if 'Springfield' is just a cover name) has historically been Muncie, Indiana.

Springfield has a body of water? oh look, MapQuest shows Springfield, IN (Laporte County) is near Lake Michigan. Springfield, IN (Posey County) is a little drive away from the meeting of the Wabash and the Ohio rivers.

Neither is right next door to one another........ but it's a cartoon, and physics are always bent. Maybe it's that left turn at Albuquerque at work. Shelbyville is in the middle of the state. Springfield to the extreme north or the extreme south. It could work. I like the idea of turning 7-11s into Kwik-E marts selling Kwik-E products, that's dope (except for the refusal to make an official Duff Beer. that's weak. understandable, but weak.). I don't know why they went to all this trouble of trying to make a contest of what isn't contestable. The Simpson's universe does not exist, but if it did, it'd be in Indiana. Just like Eerie.

Springfield Elementary School is an exact replica of Ainsworth Elementary in the downtown area...where, oddly enough, Matt Groening went to school. It's not too far from Montgomery and Burnside streets. Lovejoy is the next street south of Montgomery. Not too far off Flanders. Not far from Quimby. But...let some hodunk Springfield have its day in the sun.

Yeah, nevermind that Springfield in the show is an exact replica of the area Goening grew up in, and just about every name in the show is a landmark in that area, and just about every landmark on the show directly corrolates to one near his boyhood home, and many of the events satarized in the show coincided with similar events in his howntown.

But, besides that you might be right*.

I am surprised the WB hasn't come up with a black-face version of this show... it could be called The Pimp Sons. It, of course, would be based on the Massachusetts city of the same name and would revolve around the usual Nog culture of dealin', whorin', and bangin'... there would be no "Homer" character, to keep things "real."

Shrug. It's not set in Portland; it's set in Springfield, and Springfield has a rivalry with Shelbyville. Portland is not and has never been characterized as Anytown, USA or Small Town, USA -- nor has the state of Oregon itself.

As someone who never knew where Groening grew up, while watching the first 10 or so seasons of the show religiously, I'd have guessed the show was set in Illinois, before Oregon. Instead, I assumed those little 'yellow trash' characters were Hoosiers. But thank you for re-iterating the Portland connection to the show. Springfield is Groening's dreamtime Portland. Point for you.
