Fall weddings.

FUCK that shit. As of right now, there's only one I'm scheduled to attend, which is for my girlfriend's father. This is his second marriage so it won't be one of those grand hoopla shindig dealios, but I'm still expected to attend. I just found out about it couple days ago, and this shite is goin' down October 20th. So, naturally, what's the first thing that pops in my head? Who does Mich State play.

I hop on espn.com and look it up. It reads:

October 20th @ Ohio St 3:30 EST

FUCK. Of course. Not like it's only the biggest game on the schedule or anything, right next to the Michigan game.

3:30 game, 5 pm wedding. No big deal, I think. I'll watch the first hour (thank god it's a local wedding), and then record the rest.

You see, it isn't just the Michigan State football aspect. I'm just as big, in fact possibly a bigger fan of college football in general. I try to catch as many good games on CF Saturday as possible. I'm lucky to be in the prime of this technology age, where I can make a firm committment to do something else knowing I won't miss a single down of the game. However, if for any reason I couldn't record it, I would NOT go to the wedding. I even had to break that to the gf. I'm sort of a dick like that, but fuckit, these ground rules were established long ago.

Anyway, it makes me wonder about some of the excuses you guys had to come up with in the past to get out of going to a wedding, or some equally boring event in order to watch your team play.

I have had to attend weddings on some of PSU's more epic contests of late.

I was at my sister-in-law's wedding for the 2002 Nebraska game. I managed to slip out and watch the second half.

I was at a friend's wedding for the 1999 PSU/Purdue game. The groom's family was from Scranton. Some of the uncles wheeled in a TV and turned the game on right as soon as people were sitting down for dinner. That pissed a lot of folks off. I ended up out in the car with my parents listening to the end of the game on the radio.

I was at my cousin's wedding for the 2005 PSU/OSU game. I caught the last half of the fourth quarter on the bar TV.

These were all PSU victories. I guess there's something to it - I should go to a wedding every time PSU needs a dramatic win.

Truth be told, I've been lucky so far. Most weddings I've been invited to have come in the spring and summer months. My own wedding was in June.

We got an invite to my wife's cousin's daughter's wedding, If I'm not mistaken, the wedding is scheduled for September 22, which is the Michigan State game. I'll probably sneak into the bar for a good portion of the game. The only reason I want to go at all is because my wife's cousin is an absolute riot. He's also a big sports fan.

The only other game I missed for a wedding was the Pittsburgh game in '01 when my wife's co-worker got married. My father died that same week, so my mind was elsewhere anyway. Besides, she made it to my dad's calling hours the week of her own wedding, so I would've looked like a Grade A asshole if I skipped her wedding for a football game under those circumstances. That one had a huge break between the ceremony and the reception, so I actually got to watch a little of the game.

Weirdest sports-related conflict I had come up on a wedding was when one of my college buddies got married during Final Four week in '89. One of my other friends had one of those portable TV's. During dinner we would discreetly turn it on under the table from time to time and watch a few minutes, then turn it off. After dinner we decided what the fuck, and left it on the table on. There were more guests huddled around that portable TV than were doing anything else.

What's really frustrating is when you agree to go to one of these things against your better judgment, then someone at said event has the common sense to turn the game on, and you still get in trouble for watching.

My then-GF's grandparents celebrated their 50th anniversary on the same day as the two Final Four semifinal games a few years ago. I was bummed, but I was willing to tough it out for her. Somebody at the reception managed to find a TV and tune it to the fuzzy, over-the-air feed of the games, so of course I was planted within viewing range of the TV for the majority of the event. My GF was still pissed, even though if I'd had my druthers, I'd have been at home on the couch with a 6-pack and a bag of Funyuns.

It's one thing for chicks to expect us to attend the occasional lame family event in lieu of watching a big game, but expecting us to pretend that the game isn't even happening when it's right in front of our faces is a little unrealistic.

i remember i had to attend my uncle's wedding in 00 on the same day that michigan state beat michigan by 60 points at the breslin center. listened to 90% of it on the radio while waiting for shit to get moving. other than that, i've been fortunate except for having to give up rush tickets to see a friend get married this sept. for the love of GOD and G0D.

I was trying to zip my wife's blouse when Zibby broke the punt return for the TD. I ripped her blouse. We had to go to the store to buy a new one. Only one they had was a double XL. Wife had to buy a whole new outfit.

Was getting text updates from my buddy. Went from "4th and 9, 1:01 left" to "60 yd bomb" to "TD, USC wins". This was all while the best man was giving the speech. I got the last one after he was finished, the bride and her family didn't appreciate me screaming "MOTHER FUCKER!". Groom laughed and another family I knew said, "Well ND must have lost."

Many people were bitter at that couple. That was also the same day as UM/PSU and MSU/OSU where Johnelle had his halftime melt down.

Yep, teh wifey and I agreed on a spring wedding and then her and her mother found a reception area where all the Spring dates were filled, so they started thinking about moving the wedding back to the fall. No fucking way. I knew the backlash I would receive from all of my friends if we had gone through with a fall wedding. I was able to convince them of another place that was available in May. Thank god I didn't miss a college football game on account of my own wedding day.

Luckily all of my friends have married during spring time. However, my wife's bestfriend got married during the elite 8 games during Texas' final four run a few years ago. That was very difficult to get through.
