Yankee player, broadcaster dies at 89

Hall of Fame shortstop and longtime broadcaster Phil Rizzuto passed away at the age of 89 on Tuesday, according to a report on WNBC's Web site.

The 1950 AL MVP, Rizzuto played 13 seasons with the Yankees, going to the playoffs in 10 of them.
He would later serve as the team's color commentator, both on radio and televsion, for 40 years.

Rizzuto was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994 after being voted in by the Veterans Committee.

He had one really good year. Career .273 hitter.

He's the modern day equivalent of Jose Offerman. He was an average SS who played with great players on great teams. He was a sentimental choice selected because of the years he spent in the booth. End of story.

I don’t have strong feelings about Rizzuto either way, but Ted Williams said that if the Red Sox had Rizzuto, Boston, not New York, would have won all of those World Series.

Yes & no, he got in because of Ted Williams. BTW, that endorsement as absurd as it seems to Red Sox fans, is mind boggling to Yankee fans and that's why it held so much weight with the Vet committee. If it had been Joe D or Mickey or Yogi or anyone else associated to the Yankees, it wouldn't have meant half as much. Being on the Yankees gave him the opportunity to be a 5 time all-star, league MVP and play on 10 championship teams. Bottom line, he's in ('sup the ground) the HOF and the Yankee haters can keep on hating until some other team comes along and replaces their dynasty ('sup not likely to happen any time soon).

I don't hate the Yankees.... in fact, I even sorta like them because I despise the Sux that much. If the Yanks are winning then the Sux are sucking. I just hate it when average players like Gary Carter and Phil Rizzuto are immortalized alongside the real all-time greats.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Former major league All-Star Jose Offerman was arrested Tuesday night after charging the mound and hitting the pitcher and catcher with his bat during an independent minor league game.

Bridgeport police said Offerman was arrested, but did not detail the charge. Police said he posted bond.

Offerman, playing for the Long Island Ducks in the Atlantic League, homered in the first inning. The next inning, he was hit by a pitch from Bridgeport’s Matt Beech and charged the mound with his bat.

Offerman hit Beech in the hands and struck catcher John Nathans in the head.

The game was delayed for about 20 minutes because of the melee. Offerman, Beech and Bridgeport manager and former major league pitcher Tommy John were all ejected.

There was no immediate update on the condition of Beech or Nathans.

Offerman batted .273 during his 15 seasons in the majors. He last played in the majors in 2005 with Philadelphia and the New York Mets. He was an All-Star in 1995 with the Dodgers and 1999 with Boston.

I wouldn't call Rizutto an "average" player (fuck Gary Carter), not with 5 allstar & a league MVP to his credit. He was definitely a HOF "on the fence" guy and got in because of Ted Williams plea (despite what Adel says).

Heard the Offerman story this morning on the radio, fucking laughed. Maybe baseball should be more like hockey, let the guys fight it out once in a while.

What was so great about Rizzuto? He didn't hit for average or power and was a good fielder... but by no means was he Omar fucking Vizquel either. On the fence? Are you high?

Albert Belle is a 6 time all star with a league MVP to his credit (fuck Mo Vaughn in 95), has a .295 career average, 381 HR, dominated the game for many years, and he'll never make it. He's off the ballot two years after becoming eligible.

Never said Phil was "great" just better than average. The HOF doesn't look purely at stats, there are the intangibles that are considered and yes, it is a popularity contest of sorts. BTW, comparing Albert Belle to Rizzuto is laughable, stick to contemporaries or at least similar players for comparison.

Belle's dismissal from the ballot only further reinforces something that you pointed out. It is a popularity contest and who cares that Belle was a dominant force for about 8 years. He was a Grade A fucktard, sure, but he deserves to be on the ballot if Dale frigging Murphy is still kicking. If you're a nice guy, then you get to stick around. That is bullshit.

I'd consider voting Rizzuto in because of what he did off of the field, but not because he was a HOF player....

Pete Rose belongs in the hall for his achievements on the field....

A perfect example of the popularity contest is Jim Ed Rice. Surly bastard never wanted to talk to the media and so they gave him the finger right back. Lifetime .298 hitter, 382 HR, 1451 RBI's. 8 All Stars, 1978 MVP. If Scooter is in then this guy for sure belongs.
