BTW: 50 Cent is OK if you can get past the infantile mixes. His flow actualy is OK, if occasionaly WAY too repetive. That's why I dropped that Kleptones link on the other thread. With the proper mix, he can be quite listenable.

I've listened to NWA and Ice T, I just don't care for the gangsta style rap at all. Some of Coolios stuff is interesting, but I wouldn't buy or DL a cd of it to listen to in the car, it's just doesn't do it for me. Beastie boys are entertaining, but again, not a CD I'd buy. I like Public Enemy, but last I checked they were over say, 12-15 years ago. At least they had some substance, a message, and talent that went way beyond the commercialized crap rap being put out now.

Sorry dude. Don't have a closed mind, I just appreciate real music. Not a bunch of lame ass "pay attention to me" style rhymes layered over other peoples music they sampled.

Besides that, I started a 3 piece band. We have a gig set up for this August at an outdoor music and arts festival. Learning 40 songs that cross 4 decades is keeping me busy, but it's a challenge since we have to start with about 60 and weed out the riff raff.

Been years since I played live, but we've already played at several parties and got a good response. I need a new amp, though.

War REAL Music that has actual instruments played by musicians, lyrics you can let your kids listen to, and a melody that isn't stolen. ;)

The Kleptones use other people's beats, loops and vocals. But its how they arrange them to create messages that aren't quite what the original artist had in mind. That can range from having ODB rapping over the track for Another One Bites The Dust to the absolutley hillarius beatdown they serve up on Vanilla Ice. And, don't forget "Yoshimi Battles The Hip Hop Robots", if only for the utterly amazing welding job done on Are You A Visionary. Not to mention the tribute to Bill Hicks, the last comic genius of the 20th century.

Unless you're Blind Lemon old dude from back in the 1890's, you stole something from somebody every time you wrote a rock and roll song. I know I did. And so did Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Carole King etc...

IMO, it's not so much about stealing riffs or samples, it is about taking that riff, sample, vocal and making it into an original expression. If you can do that, then you are being original.

Oh, and props on getting the band together. Don't smoke too much weed getting your act together. ;)

Not in the same way rappers do it. The above listed dudes certainly were disciples of a prior generation of rock and roll / rhythm and blues artists and they certainly re-recorded some songs, or reworked some blues songs, were inspired by songs, but they didn't lift whole key phrases from someone elses song and use that phrase as the only musical element in the entire song, slapping lyrics on top with no other developed melody and just some generic drumbeats.

Just sayin'. The majority of Rap music - especially hip hop gangsta style has quagmired big time. There've been no new breakthroughs in that area for some time now. Every song lyric I read seem to have most if not all of the following elements: a gun/"I will shoot you" reference, a ho' reference, an alcohol/drug reference, some variation of the word "homie", an "I am rich" reference, a clothing reference, an "I am tough because I live on the street" reference, and a car reference.

Real creative, ground breaking stuff. Didn't run DMC, Young MC , and that big fat fuck who did "wild thing" run most of that stuff down before the 90's even began?

I'll bet I could pick 5 songs at random from 2 or 3 of todays gangsta artists and find most of the above refs.

This is one of those songs I heard, - liked the down beat and it made me feel rather psychotic.

That's kinda what I look for in a tune.

First heard this tune last summer cranked up load outside the Tobaggan ride at the Missouri State Fair (some Irony there, huh?) and it kinda had that wierd effect of making me think of the Sopranos and lots of Guns.

Didn't know the title and hadn't heard it again until my oldest son came over last week and had this cranked up. Downloaded it and now I've probably listened to it 30 times.
