academic eligibility...

Post by peter dragon »

Ok so I was having this argument with a Notre Dame fan here at work who wanted to point out that Ohio State doesn’t start their classes till the end of September (Sept 21st) and Notre Dame and most other schools the end of August (Aug 28th) thus giving Ohio State an unfair advantage that the football team plays like 4 games during which they dont have to worry about classes and football.

Ohio State=Quarters
Notre Dame=Semesters...

any way.. while poking around, I found the academic eligibility requirements for both Ohio State and for Notre Dame..

Notre Dame:

To remain eligible for intercollegiate athletics, students must meet the Notre
Dame standard of academic good standing by earning the minimum semester
grade-point-averages listed below:

First semester of freshman year 1.70
Second semester of freshman year 1.85
Sophomore year until graduation 2.00

While at Ohio State you must meet the following:

During year 1 must maintain 1.80 to play
During year 2 must maintain 1.80 to play
During year 3 through graduation must maintain 2.00

What I came away from all this was that Notre Dames eligibly requirements aren’t all that different than any other school and the requirements for all student athletes is fucking pathetic.. Jesus Christ... a 2.0? WTF?

I think those are the requirements to stay eligible by school standards, but I believe it differs for the football team.

It's an argument you will never win. The ND fans who go around and want to tell you about the academic standards and how they are better than everyone else is the type of ND fan you want to stay away from.

To an extent, those people are right, but usually not in the way they think.

ND's standards for academic eligibility aren't much, if any, higher than any other school's. Where ND is different, however, is in graduation rates. Players are expected to graduate at ND, and coaches are expected to maintain high graduation rates among the players.

In fact, while the last three administrations all have demonstrated patience (up to a point, anyway) with coaches over won-lost records, each of those administrations would've had very little patience with any coach who allowed a sudden significant drop in graduation rates, without some significant mitigating factor (a number of players who left early, for example). And if any coach had neglected the graduation requirement, he would have done so at the immediate peril of his job. Even Bob Davie, who rather famously never got ND, understood that much.

ND is always at or near the top of the heap in the NCAA as far as graduation rates are concerned, and that's not an accident.

Upon further review, I've come up with three additional matters affecting academic eligibility at ND. I know that at least one of them is somewhat unique to ND, I'm not sure about the others:
  • A single grade of F in any semester renders the player academically ineligible for the following semester, even if the player otherwise meets the minimum overall GPA requirements.
  • Varsity athletes at ND are permitted to take only 12 credit hours during semesters when their sport is in season, but must take at least 15 credit hours in semesters where their sport is not in season.
  • Varsity athletes at ND are not permitted to use the fifth year of eligibility as a "catch up" year for graduation purposes. In order to get a fifth year of eligibility at ND, in addition to meeting NCAA rules as to eligibility for a fifth season, an athlete must (a) graduate from ND in four years; and (b) get accepted into a graduate program at ND (usually the second requirement is pretty easy if you meet the first).
I know the last one is unique to ND. I don't know much about academic eligibility requirements at other schools, so maybe many others have the first two rules in effect as well, or at least something similar. But it seems to me that any school with rules similar to the first two would have either a fairly high graduation rate, or an unacceptably high academically ineligible rate. If a school has a number of athletes who are taking a full courseload, doing okay academically, and not graduating, perhaps the problem lies in the athletes being unaware of university graduation requirements. That problem would be easily fixed by a little guidance to the athletes in selecting their curriculum.
