Not just injured, P-fan, thirty-four were murdered in an attack that lasted hours. THE ISRAELIS NOT ONLY HIT THE LIBERTY WITH A TORPEDO, BUT STRAFED IT WITH MACHINE GUNS FROM BOATS, AND DROPPED NAPALM ON IT FROM JETS.

The "official" excuse offered by Israel was a pathetic lie to the effect that they mistook the Liberty for an Egyptian vessel (which looked nothing like the Liberty--had been sunk long before). and that the Liberty had no American flag displayed. Total bullshit.

In fact the Liberty was a spy ship, observing the fighting occurring between Israeli and Egyptian forces. Ariel Sharon, an Israeli general at the time had apparently catured several thousand Egyptians on the Sinai Peninsula--and wanted to execute them in secret. Thus the decision was made to sink and destroy the Liberty which was right off the Gaza coast.

After ten official US investigations (including five congressional investigations), there was never any evidence that the attack was made with knowledge that the target was a US ship. There is substantial evidence the attack was a tragic mistake caused by blunders of both the US and Israel. Eight US presidents, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush (41), Clinton, and Bush (43), have each accepted the conclusion that the attack was a tragic case of mistaken identity.
