Grade your team (NFL style)
I know this idea was mentioned in the CFB forum, so why not bring it over the big boys. How did your team do?
Texans
Passing B - Schaub played well for the most part. He made a huge mistake by throwing an INT in the endzone when Johnson was in single coverage. Had he put more air under the ball, Johnson would have had time to make a play on it. Other than that, Schaub did a great job of spreading the ball around and hooking up with one the #1 receiver.
Running B - Ahman Green and Ron Dayne did a decent job of taking care of the ball and hit the holes hard. Nothing special, but they got positive yardage every time they touched the ball
Offensive Line B - This would be an A if McKinney didn't get owned on one series. One blown assignment where a linebacker had a free shot on Schaub didn't look good either. Other than that, they did an exceptional job of run blocking and didn't do a whole lot to hurt themselves in pass defense.
Special Teams B- - Jacoby Jones got too excited and tiptoed too much on a couple of his returns. Granted, the Chiefs did a great job of covering him when he made a return. The grade really comes into play when they forced a turnover on one of Eddie Drummond's punt returns. That shifted the momentum and led to our first points.
Defensive Line A+ - Disrupted Huard a lot of times and recorded 3 or 4 sacks. They also kept KC from going to the running game by containing LJ. No easy yards for the running game all afternoon. Williams justified his status as a #1 pick a little with the performance he turned in.
Linebackers A - Great job of not letting the running game get to the secondary and keeping the Chiefs from passing down the middle. To hold Gonzales to 25 yards receiving was really impressive.
Secondary A+ - They hit hard and hit often. Forcing turnovers and big hits when needed. Great job all around containing Bowe and Parker.
Coaching B+ - This is not an A because of some bad playcalling on the offensive side of the ball. I thought towards the end of the first half with the ball on midfield, the Texans should have taken a shot at a hail mary. When you have three speedsters with height such as Andre Johnson, Jerom Mathis, and Jacoby Jones, then Kubiak should have taken a shot. Also, they didn't run enough in the first half. The 10 minute drive in the 4th quarter where the Texans just pounded the ball showed that they have the ability to move the ball at will on the ground.
Overall A - Solid effort from the entire team to win the way they did against the Chiefs.

These folks are currently romoved from poptart's Christmas card list.
S. Janikowski
I routinely snap my 2 irons off with more accuracy than Flubber does his kicks.
Blessed with a right leg that would make Popeye's forearms jealous, the Pollock has ONE duty in life -- keek de ball straight.
Since taking over as head coach, Kiffin has made it his mantra that NOBODY IS ON SCHOLARSHIP -- EVERYBODY IS IN COMPETITION FOR THEIR ROSTER SPOT.
And yet Flubber, among the worst inconsistency offenders on the roster, had NO competition during training camp.
Letting Flubber glide by unchallenged was unwise, as evidenced by his 3 miss opening day.
If I was me I'd have locked him out of the lockerroom on Sunday and then notifed him by email that he's been cut.
Bring in some scrub off the scrap heap to take the job.
Can't be any worse than watching this FIRST ROUND DRAFT CHOICE KICKER waddle out with hangover vomit on his jersey and shank balls off his ankle.
But of course Al will never allow he and his genius cutting edge first round selection to be mocked by a taking out of the trash.
Oh well, rock on, Flubber.
Rob Ryan
Shave, haircut, lobotomy.
Son of Buddy was Mike Martz' personal ball of yarn on Sunday.
Perplexed by a 3 or 4 receiver offense much?
Of course you've got to bring a little blitz, .... but NO ....
No blitz, lay back in soft coverage and turn Jon Kitna into John Unitas.
Is this the guy some of Raider Nation was pimping hard to be our new head coach???
Raider fan is not always smart.
Jake Grove
Half-crippled J. Newberry beat out Grove for the center position, only to go down in the early stages of game 1 - lolz.
Now it's Grove's show for a while.
I'm pretty sure S. Rogers is still pushing him back, but I'll check last April.
This is the guy that was touted as having a 'mean streak' coming out of college?
Haven't seen it.
He's a flyweight at center, and I don't know that a team ever goes real far without having someone capable -- at least -- in the middle of the o-line.
2008 off-season priority.
Michael Huff
#7 overall draft choice last year.
zzzzzzz ...... zzzzzzz .......zzzzzz.........
Was supposed to be some sort o' dynamic playmaker at the safety position coming out of U.T.
Nope.
Very pedestrian to this point.
In fact, 17 games into his career, I can't remember ONE big play made by this guy.
I can recall seeing him chasing receivers into the endzone a few times though.
Step it up?
Robert Gallery
A #2 overall draft choice.
3 penalties on Sunday.
Actually looks pretty good at guard, IMO, and the line as a whole looked good run blocking on Sunday.
Guard might be his spot.
But for ONCE, just please play a clean game, Sampson.

Offense B. Kitna played well, but the int's, especially the one in the end zone, have got to be cut down. McDonald had a nice game at wr, Calvin Johnson looked good. Roy Williams was somewhat held in check, but with this offense you must choose your poison. The running game was moderately effective. Bell's late td sealed the deal. The O-line gave Kitna more time than any game last year.
Defense-D+. The defense gave up waaay too many yards to the Raiders. McCown was made to look serviceable, and most here know that he is not. Fucking Curry was their go to guy, yet he continually got open. Too many yards, too many points. Thankfully the polack kicker shanked fg after fg.
ST-C+-Hansen, always solid. Nick Harris must've punted well, he just got extended for 5 years. Returns and coverages were uneventful, which can be a good thing.
Coaching-B-minus-I liked the offensive play calling. The defensive was a tad shakey. Blowing the big lead was brutal, but the d adjusted well to the Raiders adjustments and blew the doors off in the 4th quarter.
A nice win? Sure
A win on the road? Beautiful. We've recently gone multiple seasons without a road victory.
Beating the Raiders? Should've been expected. So nothing to gloat about. It will be interesting to see how Martz's offense attacks Minnie's tough defense this week.

Re: Grade your team (NFL style)
Steelers
Passing B+
Ben looked sharp and in control of the offense from the first snap. No INTs was a good sign. This would have been an A save for a few too many dropped balls. Overall a vast improvement from 2006.
Running A-
Fast Willie tallied a workman like 109 yards on 27 carries. But, he needs to double up on some ball handling drills. Dookie Davenport chipped in another 43 and, more importantly, ran with a whole lot more aggression than I ever saw from him last year. The 200+ yards total rushing is a little deceptive, since 50 of those yards came on gadget plays to WRs. But overall these Steelers showed they could still pound the rock when they need to.
Offensive Line A
Only allowed one sack and very few pressures. Consistently opened holes. Only one false start and no holding penalties on the offensive line.
Special Teams B+
Sepulveda boomed the ball for a 45 yd average on punts. His net of 37 was respectable and 4 of 6 punts were downed inside the 20. Reed actualy bagged 3 touchbacks on 7 kicksoffs and the return team never allowed the Browns to start a drive beyond the 30. I would have liked to see more out Rossum on returns, but at least he ran with authority and didn't drop any balls.
Defensive Line A+
Dominated at the line of scrimmage creating exactly the kind of havoc that linebackers in the 3-4 require to get to the ball and make plays.
Linebackers A
Took total advantage of the disruption created by the D-Line. Consistently stuffed Jamal Lewis to the tune of 2.9 per carry and constantly harried and harassed Frye and Anderson. Remember the name James Harrison. You might well see him in the Pro Bowl.
Secondary A+
Held both Frye and Anderson to under 50% completion percentage, 2 INTs, 2 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries. This is one of the deepest and most productive secondaries in football.
Coaching A
Both offensive and defensive game plans worked to near perfection. The team was disciplined, taking only 6 penalties for 45 yards and only 2 being holding or false starts. Special teams were markedly improved from 2006 and everybody appears to have bought into Tomlin's system.
Overall A
Every unit was very good to excellent. This is a team that has a very good chance to start the season 5-0 going into their bye week. If they stay healthy, a Lombardi at the end of the season is not out of the question.

Well I've watched every minute of every Steelers game since 2003 (when I discovered a local Steelers bar down the Street from me).OCmike wrote:No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express... :DBSmack wrote:Mike,
Did you watch any of the Steelers-Browns game?
[insert joke here]
I'm telling you, the biggest problem the Steelers had last year was not Ben's scrambled dome, it was fumbles and taking stupid penalties, especially in the return game. Those issues have nothing to do with the level of competition and everything to do with players losing discipline and coaches who were not as willing as they once were to crack the whip. What I'm seeing is a team that has 14 offensive and defensive starters only 2 years removed from a Super Bowl and 3 from a 15-1 season that appears to have found their work ethic and discipline. Hell yea I think they could win a Super Bowl.

BENGALS
(Keeping in mind you have to adjust scoring to competition and circumstances)
Passing, B-: The first half was an A and the second half was a D+, but seeing as how the comp was a vaunted Ravens D I'm adjusting up to the B- grade.
Running, D: This would be an F except for the comp factor. Only thing that I did like was that they never did abandon the run completely even when it wasn't working. Have to make an effort to keep the D honest.
O-line, A: Really more like a B- but again the comp was strong and injury issues had many second teamers seeing action. The run blocking left a lot to be desired but the pass blocking was exceptional given the comp.
Special Teams, D-: Only thing keeping this from an F is the fact that the injury problems forced many non-traditional guys to fill in on ST. This is a major area of concern though, the D is still suspect so giving out field position is a recipe for disaster.
D-line, D: Never were able to stop the run on any sort of consistent basis and the pressure on McNair wasn't coming from the line most of the time.
LB's, A: Did a great job of keeping McNair hurried all night and forcing TO's. Also did great in keeping too many long runs off the books when the RB's inevitably got past the line too easy.
Secondary, B: Did a solid but not spectacular job.
Coaching, C-: Had a great gameplan in place to open the game but made little to no second half adjustments.
Overall, C: Hard to go much higher than this considering the MVP for Cincy was Billick's dreadful playcalling, but can't go much lower considering it was a W against one of the better (alleged) teams in the AFC.
