Week 7 Rankings (good luck with that)

Post by Shoalzie »

I did some reshuffling and pretty much ignored my previous rankings. It is utter chaos and we've still got half the season to go...

1. Ohio State (7-0)...they're the best undefeated team left but the meat of their Big Ten schedule lies ahead
2. South Florida (6-0)...I should've had them ahead of BC all along because of their two quality wins
3. Boston College (7-0)...huge game in two weeks in Blacksburg but both teams are on the bye this week
4. LSU (6-1)...can't drop them very far because they lost on the road in triple OT, they become the best one loss team
5. South Carolina (6-1)...they stay behind the Tigers because of the loss in Baton Rogue earlier in the season
6. Oklahoma (6-1)...that loss in Boulder was bad but they've got some nice wins under their belt
7. Kentucky (6-1)...very impressive performance on Saturday against LSU but with loss against South Carolina, they stay third in the SEC rankings
8. California (5-1)...bad loss at home last night but can't ignore the fact they beat the Ducks
9. Oregon (5-1)...tough 3-game stretch ahead (at Washington, vs. USC, vs. Arizona State)
10. Virginia Tech (6-1)...SEE comments next to Boston College
11. Arizona State (7-0)...no great wins up this point but the next four games will prove if they're legit
12. West Virginia (5-1)...that loss to the Bulls earlier stings but they've got a favorable slate down the stretch
13. USC (5-1)...still in the hunt but probably has the worst loss of the contenders
14. Hawaii (7-0)...the Warriors become the BCS busters and should win out but look out for that finale against Washington
15. Kansas (6-0)...a very quiet unbeaten with a somewhat favorable schedule ahead

My #16 seed of the week:
Auburn (4-2)...the win over Florida is a nice feather in their cap

Kind of funny when consider the Big Ten, ACC and Big East are thought to be the three weakest of the BCS conferences and they currently hold the top 3 spots because they each have one unbeaten team left. The SEC, Pac-10, and Big XII are the better conferences this year but their top teams are going to have no fewer than one loss when the dust settles. Just looking at the 16 teams I have right now, wouldn't that make a pretty sweet playoff? Granted, we're not going to have 16 undefeated or one-loss teams after we get through the regular season but at this point, is there really a lot of seperation between 1 and 13? It's been a dog eat dog season.

Really you can arrange LSU, South Carolina and Kentucky in any order when you consider South Carolina has beaten Kentucky, LSU has beaten South Carolina and Kentucky just beat LSU. I think those are the three top teams in the SEC right now any way you slice it.

The battle at the top of the Pac-10 becomes very interesting with an unbeaten Arizona State who really hasn't beaten anyone yet...still has USC, UCLA, Cal and Oregon to play. If they survive that gauntlet, they become a legit title contender. Cal stays as my #1 Pac-10 team because of the win over Oregon.

The ACC game of the year is in two weeks when the Hokies host the Eagles....could be Boston College's first big win of the season. They haven't really put together that good of resume so far but the key is to stay unbeaten.

The Big Ten is just as jumbled as the other conferences with the one unbeaten with Ohio State but they also have 7 teams with a 5-2 record. The Buckeyes five remaining games will be against teams from that group. Just think now had Michigan had beaten Appalachian State and only had the Oregon loss on their resume...would they be in the top 15 right now?

I'll bite, why is Oregon ranked and not Cal? I used my reasoning for keeping Cal ranked ahead of Oregon being that they beat them head-to-head. Just curious...I knew someone would kick the Bears completely out of the poll or drop them as far as USC last week.

I realize at this point...ranking these teams is like hitting the pause button during a race. You're just getting a snapshot of where everyone is now and you aren't going to know how this last half of the season is going to go. The only thing that matters right now is who is #1 and #2. Let those heated debates between BC and USF honks begin!

The beauty of waiting until mid October to do your first ranking is that you don't have to re-shuffle anything.

My rankings are based on something kind of crazy for CFB rankings, perceptions about teams after watching them play multiple games against various competition.

1- LSU, still the best team IMO and only loss was on the road in triple OT to a pretty good team
2- Cal, only loss was without their starting QB and they still almost won the game
3- Oregon, only loss was a barnburner to Cal
4- Oklahoma, only loss a nail biter on the road
5- Ohio State, unimpressive team but a 0 in the loss column this late still gets props
6- Virginia Tech, only loss was on the road against LSU
7- Boston College, another unimpressive team with a 0 in the loss column
8- South Carolina, like VT only loss was a roadie to Baton Rouge
9- Kentucky, huge W yesterday and their only loss was a prime time roadie to SC
10- South Florida, another team I'm not impressed with but still sporting a 0 in the loss column
11- USC, their 1 loss is dreadful but they still are loaded with talent
12- Kansas, I figure if you still have that goose egg in the loss column this late you deserve an okay ranking
13- Arizona State, see my KU comments
14- West Virginia, felt they were overrated to start the year and still not overly impressed with them
15- Florida, still an extremely talented team that has a good shot to finish the year with only the 2 L's they already have
16- Hawaii, a total fraud of a team but being unbeaten thus far gets them into my top 16

Shine, I love ya man, but your poll is way out of left feild. I like the basketball apporach though.

Not that mine is going to be that much better, but here we go.

1. Ohio St - I think they are going to drop one before the season is over, but they have taken care of bizzzness so far.
2. South Florida - Have to give mucho respect to Mucho Bulls. Pressure will be too much, this won't last.
3. Boston College - This won't last.
4. Oklahoma - I think it is quite possible that OU drops another game they should not.
5. South Carolina - Gave LSU a game and beat the Widcats.
6. Kentucky - Showed heart, I give them a pass for the week
7. LSU - They are still stacked, Miles is just too abrasive for me, I think they lose at least one more game.
8. Cal - MTOOL!
9. Flordia - Still solid
10. Oregon - Quack!
11. USC - I see two more losses, fucking Stanford man.
12. Arizona St. - Undefeated, time will tell in the Pac Ten
13. Kansas - Undefeated, nice easy schedule ahead.
14. Hawaii - Crazy fucks
15. Michigan - They have gotten better.

Wrong.

I can't argue that the SEC is not the best from top to bottom, but when you throw in the top 16 teams in the nation, even if the SEC gets four in, there are going to be 1 to 2 really fucking good teams out of the Big 10, Big 12 and Pac 10 that are very capable of knocking those SEC teams off.

Is Wetzel the owner of the SEC Ballsucking Homer troll?

the top 5 should change once again next week..

with BC playing VT and USF vs da Rut.

altho, rutgers is pretty freakin over-rated, if their D shows up to play it COULD be an 'upset'.

if VT's D shows up and they play Beamer ball...BC will drop out of the top 10.

i predict this time next week the top 5 will be something like

1. tOSU
2. USF
3. OU
4. LSU
5. Oregon

Yeah, we know.

Sin,
SEC Schedulers

Exactly, MO.

Of course, I can think of a way, within the present system, that the SEC can stick up for itself, and it doesn't involve Wetzel's suggestion of whining...

You know, the SEC could try playing a few games against top-tier teams from the PAC, B11, B12, and that sort of thing... you know, like all those other conferences do.

Certainly not the end-all be-all, but it would give the country a little better idea how the SEC stacks up against the other real conferences...

Just a thought.

Or, they can whine about the system, which has been their strategy so far.

But when the logic of the SEC goes like "Hmmmm, we don't get our just due. Seems like the pollsters overrate those West Coast teams, while not giving enough credit to our brand of BIG TIME POWER COLLEGE FOOTBALLL! But, I think I have a solution -- since some of these pollsters think USC, Oregon, and Oklahoma even belong mentioned in the same breath as us, I've thought up a system to prove our worth, and show the rest of the country how the SEC stacks up against other major conferences....

get me Middle Tennessee on the phone... STAT!!!!"

C'mon -- the pollsters don't screw them, they screw themselves.

That non-conference slate was pathetic but they have their 5 toughest conference games left...Michigan State, at Penn State, Wisconsin, Illinois, and at Michigan. It's not their fault the Big Ten sucks but they are in control the out-of-conference games. The Washington win in Seattle was a solid win but the losses are starting the pile up for the Huskies and it loses it's luster.

Under the current system, they are #1 by virtue of being the best undefeated team. The BCS doesn't know that Ohio State is probably not even a top 5 team if you pinned them against the top teams in the Pac-10 and SEC and Oklahoma. It's kind of funny that the best teams in America probably have one loss and if things hold serve, the title game will just be a battle of the two teams that were the last two to stay unbeaten.

I'm doing a crossword puzzle...13 Across, I'm looking for a 7-letter word that that ends with an "F" that fits the clue: "To allow teams decide the championship on the field instead of voters". Can anyone help me out?

Touche...it's not always the last two unbeatens. Considering you hate the small conferences, you probably enjoyed seeing that. Hawaii might get to be that team this year.

I would love to see 3 out of Ohio State, South Florida, Boston College, Arizona State and Kansas stay unbeaten just to muddy things up even more. It's one thing to screw over a non-BCS unbeaten but screw over a BCS conference unbeaten...this system might finally meet it's demise.

Is "CreateEvenMoreIncentiveToScheduleCreampuff" more than 7 letters?

Sounds like a wonderful system... unless you're someone like USC, LSU, or the like. Under your well-thought-out system, those traditional powers will be digging into D2 to find OOC games, since there would be no incentive for any other top-tier teams to play them.

Funny how now that they've lost the "America's Sweetheart" label, and they don't have the extremely-casual fans across the nation's sympathy for their plight as an undefeated shit-conferencer, that bandwagon has sure seemed to grind to a halt.

Not really...Appalachian State schedules creampuffs like Michigan. Where is the outrage that D-IAA needs to get rid of their playoff so they don't have soft schedules?

Go through every top team in America right now and tell me one that doesn't have at least one cupcake on their non-conference schedule? I think the worst thing to happen to college football was adding that 12th game and allow teams to schedule another soft opponent instead of adding another conference game. There isn't an App State on Michgan's schedule under the old system...and boy, do I wish I could they could have that one back.

Not really

OK.

Really, none of the systems to determine SoS are without flaw -- pretty sure everyone would agree on that.

While I don't always agree with the team rankings, as far as SoS, I believe the Sagarin is as good as anything, so it's what a defer to for SoS.

And Sagarin thinks Kansas (#126) and Hawaii (#149) have some pretty freaking laughable schedules.

Now for the "math" potion of the post -- correct me if I'm wrong, but there's 119 BCS teams, right?

Those two tragic examples of scheduling can't even crack the top 119? Are you kidding me?

Appalachian State schedules creampuffs like Michigan. Where is the outrage that D-IAA needs to get rid of their playoff so they don't have soft schedules?

You know Schotz... sometimes I think I'd enjoy life more if I was walking around in a state of ignorant bliss like you were.

You think App St did that to increase their stock in the playoff picture?

A couple of points... my first and most important would be to suggest that you at least have some tiny fucking clue what you're talking about.

What you don't seem to understand about your D1AA Playoff Utopia, is that it's arguably much less fair than the BCS system.

For one, some conferences get auto-bids, some don't.

And uhm.... remind me again when OOC games in D1AA started counting towards those autobids? Help me out here, Schotz?

PSSSST! Hey Schotz!!! Did you know they toss out the non-conference games in D1AA, and they're essentially exhibitions?

PSSSSST!!!! Hey, Schotz -- did you know that currently, App St is #5 in their conference, and if the playoffs started today, they'd be sitting at home watching?

Did you know that a team like App St has nothing, absolutely NOTHING to lose by scheduling Michigan or a D3 cellar-dweller? But they get a nicer paycheck from Michigan?

I think the worst thing to happen to college football was adding that 12th game and allow teams to schedule another soft opponent

Except that one conference who used it as an opportunity to make the the conference picture is as clear as possible.

Guess what -- if a D1AA team from an auto-bid conference loses all of their OOC games, and runs the table in their conference, they make the playoff. Heck, they might do that losing a conference game. Nothing like an 8-4 team in your playoffs, eh?

And heyyyyyy.... USC, LSU. Michigan, or any other D1A BCS Conference team can do the same thing, and get a BCS bowl at 8-4.

Light coming on yet, Schotz?

If Whoever State played in the B11, and loses 4 games to Hoffstra, Brown, William & Mary, and Northwestern, under your system, they are still granted a shot at the championship?

Are you on drugs?

And KU deserves major props on beating KST in manhatten, MU has proven they cant win there. Plus they hadnt won there in 15+ years and handnt scored a TD in Manhatten in 10+ years, so they had a huge win. Plus it makes it better when they meet in arrowhead.

But i wont watch circle jerks for mediocre teams like cinccy or CU. people ranking Cinccy in top 15, give me a break, they beat NOONE, bigleast is Down, Rutgers is average team, they blew their wad, their leader Leonard is gone, teal is a mediocre QB. Cinccy lost to LOUSIVILLE at Home, any talk about bearcats should be OVER. Louisville is a bad team.

Someone's sarcasm detector is broken...great rant though.

Okay.....this is where you fall apart....you cry and moan and whine and bitch like a two year old about the SEC and their OOC....yet...your boy sagarin......the SEC, team for team, have the highest SOS's.......especially when you compare them to the rest of the top 25!@!!!!!

Which is it boy?

This is where your cred falls out.....SEC teams CONSISTENTLY have the hardest schedules from the man you TRUST the most....yet you cry like a bitch.......I have decided that your rants really don't make any sense. How anyone could PENALIZE anyone for having the toughest schedules is a grade "A" moron......

that shoe fits well.......

Good luck looking stupid for the remainder of your time here....

NO ONE can argue that the SEC is the best conference....period....hands down....and they may get shut out of the title game.

The problem with any idiot that's against a playoff is just this scenario.......I would say the Pac-10 and SEC are the top two cons. You would think that the winners of those two conferences should be playing for a title. Instead, we may have OSU vs USF.....arguably the two worst conferences......just because they managed to go through a weak schedule undefeated?????

OSU's SOS is SEVENTY-TWO!!!!!!! They will get bitchslapped AGAIN in the title game.....what a travesty.....

Hey, its not SEC homerism....any of you can see that its the best conference....disagree?

Furthermore.....even if you got everybody to play OOC's with everyone else...it would still be tremendously limited and the polls would still determine the outcome. If you have a playoff with conference champs and maybe a few wildcards the conference games would even be MORE important and you would actually find out who really is the best conference........a playoff IS needed...badly.

How in the hell is LSU still getting a first place vote in the AP poll? Is SEC Ballsucking Homer (or maybe T Rex) a sportswriter?

Tell me that's a misprint...
