IE 7 not working

Post by indyfrisco »

Ok, so I had my recent computer meltdown. I said fuck it and bought a new computer. My old one was 5 years old and needed upgrade anyways.

So, I get the new computer in. Had a 30 day trial for Norton Security Center. My work gave me Symantec AV for free so I installed that. The day the 30 day trial ran out, my IOE quit working. I can ping any site froma command screen, but IE will not work. I've found various threads in other boards that this symptom occurred.

I have downloaded Firefox to a memory stick. I will install that and I'm sure it will work.

My question is this: What the fuck happened to IE 7? I uninstalled the delivered trial version of Norton Security Center. I tried turning off security and firewalls, still no dice. Seems they delivered my computer with the Norton expecting me to buy it "or else". Fucking Dell...

I'm going to start using Firefox, but am just curious as to why IE took a shit. Save the "Stop using IE" replies. I'm not reading them.

I have found IE 7 to be extremely buggy. I can see where uninstalling some Norton Bloatware might foul the registry.

Did you try downloading an IE 7 installer (via another browser) and trying again?

BTW - is this Vista?

I am the IE technical expert at my job. I made a recommendation that we don't even sniff IE7 until at least SP1, and even then, we need a business critical reason to justify the expense.

PSU's question about Vista is a good one. If it's not vista, Roll that fucker back to IE6. IE7 doesn't offer anything other than tabbed browsing you can't accomplish by proactively locking down your browser. Trust me, I know more about IE than your average Joe. I refuse to install it at home. Stay with IE6 if you can.

Also, try creating a new user profile. Most IE settings are profile based, Meaning they write a new registry hive for each user. If it's not fucked up for a different user, you've got registry problems, which can be fixed fairly easily.

Yes, I have Vista.

I called Dell Support since I am still under warranty. They had me do a system restore and it seemed to fix the problem

I tried installing firefox, but that didn't even work either. So, must have been something really bad if the unbreakable Firefox was broken.

I have issues with Firefox - the memory leak and all. As a result, I find myself using IE quite a bit these days...I also have to make sure that the stuff I do for the web plays well with IE.

I know that you are trying to get IE working, and you're not looking for browser recommendations...but have you tried Opera? It works pretty well for me with a low memory footprint.

I really don't care what browser I use as long as it is somewhat secure and is working. Something was fucked up somewhere on my machine because I could ping out but could not use a browser at all. Not sure what the system restore did, but it seemed to fix the problem.

Like I said, the problem occurred before I uninstalled Norton. Here's the steps that happened:

1. Got my new computer
2. All working well
3. Norton Security Center 30 free trial installed
4. 3 days later, I installed Symantic Antivirus full version from work CD for free
5a. Norton Security Center 30 day trial ends
5b. Same day of expiration, IE no longer works.
6. Install Firefox - no dice
7. Uninstall Norton Security Center since I have Symantec AV
8. Still no IE or Firefox, but pinging still works.
9. Called Dell and did system restore after 2 hours trying to understand the English of some no doubtedly rank ass Indian whore named "Kelly" but when the survey came back her name was really Kanika. Do you know why Indians stink? They're from stinky Indian twats. Ok, enough Indian bashing. Anyhow, this worked.

Tell me what? To do the system restore, her twat reeked or both?

The answer was both. The restore got me back online and when I was on the phone with her, I was smelling something feta-like coming through the phone.
