Actually, yes, I'm sure that there are thousands who refused to evacuate. My family for one. I'm sure that their total evacuation numbers are highly inflated, though there are undoubtedly huge numbers displaced.

We, and most of the others on my street as far as I can tell, are still here. I've had three "reverse 911" calls telling me to get out, but being a rugged individualist I'm staying put. At least for now. I've got the rig loaded past the rails and pointed down the driveway.

The original evacuation was so hectic that the roads were stopped up, we decided to wait. Since then we've learned, though news and my reconnaissance runs that there is no fire within at least 3 or 4 miles of here and never has been. They just call evac for entire large areas by phone prefix.

That being said, will somebody please help me? I'm out of fucking beer.

Most of the businesses are closed, including both supermarkets. As of about 10:00 last night the only places open were the El Toro Market, a couple of liquor stores and the Shell station. I'm thinking of venturing out to El Toro and getting some carnitas and a six pack of Bohemia for lunch. The CDF crews seem to be stopping there for supplies too. Maybe I can get some news.

While I'll readily admit that it's been a very long time since I've had the displeasure of ~~desperately trying to escape from~~ visiting the southern part of california, I have a pretty strong memory of stucco on the siding and some variant of tile on the roofs being the norm, at least in decent neighborhoods.

While the SoCal may not be the brightest bulb on the tree, they have actually put a modicum of thought into these things... for the most part.

smack, I'm shocked....shocked to hear this coming from you. You think the gubment knows better than I do when it's time to get out? I'm not anywhere near the fire and I'm not getting in anybody's way. I'll be fucked if I let some automated phone system tell me to leave against my better judgement.

And if I do leave, there's no way to get back in until they remove the evac. Who knows when that will be. I figure if they let two markets and two gas stations stay open (and they're all between me and the fire) there can't be too much danger.
