After a banner year last year with James Kim and the two Mt. Hood Climbers (or was it three?), the Oregon Wilderness looks to strike early this season by going to the well again with another mathmatically-inclined Asian.

First -- thanks Snoregonian. After I dedicated a CFB post claiming the no one, but no one in Oregon refers to the university as "UO"... thanks a bunch. Then again, Oregonian reporters usually aren't Oregonians, so what do they know?


Second -- Ling Chow needs to take a back seat to the beaners who were hauling out trash bags full of weed from their outdoor grow at exactly the same time a search party looking for some other geographically-challenged hiker was hiking up the trail.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Officials have found the car of a University of Oregon professor who went missing after a weekend day hike alone.

Daming Xu had planned a hike near Cougar Reservoir area in the Cascades foothills near McKenzie Bridge on Sunday.

His car was found Tuesday at a trailhead seven miles east of Highway 126.

The Lane County Sheriff's Office says the search is expanding with more ground personnel and a helicopter is joining the search.

Xu is 63 and teaches mathematics and statistics at the University of Oregon, where he has been since 1990.

I hear GPS readings are a type of "statistics."

GPS is a good investment for greenhorns who decide to venture into the woods.

I don't even understand how this happens in Western Oregon. Since most here are unfamiliar -- in the woods in Western Oregon, the underbrush is so thick, it's virtually impossible to leave the beaten path.

Memo to hiking tards -- hey, when you take a turn/fork in an unmarked trail, have you ever considered putting some sort of marker down at the fork, even something as simple as shoving a stick in the ground? Maybe break some twigs down along the trail every few hundred feet to show where you've been? Maybe make at least a mental note of the alignment of the highest peak you can see, and gauge direction from it? Basic trail navigation stuff (heaven forbid a topo map and a compass)?


I dunno, I guess I just take it for granted that I spent about half my time growing up in the forest, and what is really basic to me is complicated shit to greenhorns, I guess.

In summer, Lost Hiker isn't likely to die from exposure. Once November rolls around, all bets are off. Anyone who doesn't realize that Chuck D. makes his winter home in the Cascades is sure to meet him.

But it still boggles the mind -- all of those trails the city-slickers are likely to take are well-maintained, and have signage much of the way, and they generally have a clear destination, and are well-trodden. What posesses someone to take a turn down a trail that only deer can navigate while on a day hike is beyond me.

Only drawback for Chuck in this instance is that the UO proff had been reproductively mature for about 40 years giving him ample time to spread his now-revealed less-fit seed. However, giving that these days guys like Oregon's own Senator Three Time Bar Exam Flunky (True-look it up) Ron Wyden is still cranking them out at 57, there is still the opportunity for some natural selection to occur here.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - A grand jury has refused to indict a man police suspected was making hashish or hash oil from his medical marijuana.

Anthony Beasley, 28, was arrested in October. His 24-plant garden abutted a parking lot at McNary High School.

Beasley was evicted from the rental property the day of his arrest.

Police say they found pipes in his home with a concentrate of marijuana, leading them to believe he was producing hashish, or hash oil.

He told police he was extracting the active ingredient of marijuana, known by the initials THC.

The grand jury considered a felony charge of manufacturing a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school.

But Marion County Deputy District Attorney Courtland Geyer says the jury's refusal means the case is all but dead.

McKENZIE BRIDGE, Ore. - The search for a University of Oregon mathematics and statistics professor missing in the Cascade foothills since Sunday has intensified.

Daming Xu, 63, told his family he was going on a day hike alone in the foothills near the Three Sisters Wilderness Area, but he never returned.

Searchers have been working hard to try to find him and on Thursday they got what they hope will be a break - a helicopter spotted fresh footprints in a snow field.

With darkness setting in, searchers planned to use an infrared device to see if they could pick up any heat signatures in the area. Meanwhile, a more permanent base camp was set up so those who are helping look for Xu could camp out overnight.

Footprints were also discovered on Tuesday and searchers followed them, but they were unable to find Xu anywhere in the area.

Worsening weather is expected to set in, which has made the search effort more pressing.

Of course, someone might want to explain to the reporters, or whoever is spewing the crap, that there's no snow in the "foothills" this time of year... too warm for that. I can see the Cascade foothills just fine from here, and there isn't a speck of snow on them. Gotta go up pretty high to see any "snow fields" this time of year... but what's a little accuracy in a news report? Government Camp is a couple thousand feet higher than the "foothills," and it's been like 50 degrees there every day for the last couplefew weeks... not really conducive to "snow fields."
