Ya' know, I've never been that crazy about Turley, but this act sorta' speaks for itself. Then again, maybe he's really only looking out for his best long term interest. Either way, this is a good and right thing and I hope many other players join in. Maybe they could start doing this at least once each season.

When I think of a player like Mike Webster who died homeless and with no where to turn for the help that he needed, that just makes me sad.

ZERO racks to Gene Upshaw....HE'S the reason why the former players are getting FUCKED on their long-term health care needs. The second Upshaw gets removed from his high horse then things will start to get better for them.

In reading what Wikipedia says about Mike Webster, one sees this .....

He is believed to have been legally disabled in 1996, and possibly before, suffering from amnesia, dementia, depression, and acute bone and muscle pain. He lived out of his pickup truck or train stations between Wisconsin and Pittsburgh even though he had friends and former teammates willing to rent apartments for him.

While widely believed to have used them, Webster never admitted to using anabolic steroids at points during his career. He did state, however, that if he did take steroids, "they were legal at the time".


He played, what 14 or 15 years in the NFL?
Sure, money then wasn't close to what it is now, but he must have made a fair amount of coin over that 14 or 15 year period of cashing checks.
What did he do with his money?

I hear that the NFL pension and retirement package is woeful, BUT ...... isn't there also some personal accountability that needs to be considered?

Regardless how his salary adjusts for inflation, dude made a lot more than the national average at the time(for working about half the year).


They have these things called IRAs, and mutual funds, and all sorts of options.

Sure there is, 'tart.

But I didn't start this topic to debate over whether the league or the NFLPA owes or should do more for retired players in dire cirscumstances. We've pretty much beat that topic into the ground already. I can see both sides in the issue, and quite frankly, who am I to judge who's right or wrong?

All I'm saying is that current players who want to step forward on their own and do something meaningful (like donating part of their game check) to help should be lauded for that effort.

Simple as that. I don't even care what their motives are.

Hmmm... dude takes a high-paying job with a well-proven track record of short careers. He decides to not save or invest any of his income for the inevitable day that the high level of income will cease.


Yeah, I'm going to lose a bunch of sleep over this, for sure. Maybe they should raise my taxes to provide for people who weren't smart enough to do any planning... I mean, at least dude is a legal resident of this country.


I will RACJ Turley for proving that private citizens will ALWAYS provide a better, more efficient solution to help their fellow man than the government can on its best day.... a system that worked quite successfully in this country for the better part of 200 years. Just think how much more generous Turley and his ilk could be if the government didn't take half their money in the name of socialism?

That may well be, but at the same time, I'm sure he couldn't foresee what was about to befall him. At that time, he probably thought he was invincible.

And fellas, Mike Webster is just one example among many. Every former player now in need has a unique story of how they got into the situation they're in.

I'm just saying that they be should be showed some compassion, not just swept under the carpet and ignored. The NFL is a billion $$$ per year industry, and it's a shame that they can't find more ways to help those who helped get it to this level.
