Showing both confidence and a passion for the city and his new team, Ed Stefanski was introduced today as president and general manager of the 76ers.
Most recently the general manger of the New Jersey Nets, Stefanski replaced Billy King as both president and general manager of the Sixers.
"I feel more than ready to be the caretaker for the 76ers," Stefanski said during a press conference at the Wachovia Center.
Stefanski is proud of his Philadelphia area roots. A graduate of Monsignor Bonner and the University of Pennsylvania, Stefanski maintained a residence in Delaware County even while working for the Nets.
"I'm a Philly guy through and through, and I die with every Philadelphia team," Stefanski said.
Stefanski became the 11th general manger of the Sixers. He said he has taken the job with an open mind. When asked about the status of coach Maurice Cheeks, who is in the final year of his contract, Stefanski replied, "I am evaluating top to bottom. I will talk to everyone and make evaluations as I go forward."
The Sixers are 5-12, and interest in the team has dwindled, with King being the lightning rod for criticism. Stefanski, known as a great talent evaluator is expected to breath some needed life into the franchise.
Sixers chairman Ed Snider and Peter Luukko, the president of Comcast-Spectacor, the owner of the team, met with Stefanski over the weekend.
"This was a guy who was too good for us to pass up," Snider said. "It was not an easy decision because Billy King was a good friend and did a good job."
