Lake Placid, NY asking for reviews

Post by Jack »

I have been offered a 6 day getaway at the Lake Placid Hilton.
Compliments of Hilton Hotels.

Anyone ever been here?
Have you skiied here?

Any recommendations?

I expect stupid replies by Goober and Dins, but I appreciate intelligent replies by the rest of you.

Thank you!

I've spent more time in Placid than Dinsdale's spent in skanks.

OK, maybe not THAT much. But quite a bit.

I've never skiied there, but Whiteface Mountain hosted the Olympic alpine events in 1980 and more top level competitions than I could possibly ever list. I visited Whiteface during the 2000 Goodwill Winter Games in Placid and the place is world class.
Any recommendations?
Take the ride down the Olympic bobsled run.

Do you have a date set for the trip? Or is it an open ended deal?

BTW: The location of the Placid Hilton is absolutely perfect. Right on Main Street in the heart of the downtown nightlife.

I’m pretty sure some people have.

Have you skiied here?
Wouldn’t it be faster to drive?

Great spot. You'll have fun. Too bad the Villa Vespa is gone, but there are many
decent places to eat--drink--scope out the snow bunnies !

Never been there, nor do I plan to, but I'm just guessing that if they held the Winter Olympics there, it probably isn't a dump. Matter of fact, I'll go out on a limb and guess it's world-class(big stretch there, eh?).

worldclass? uhhh, no. nice, by eastern north america standards, OK.

here's the problem. the adirondacks along with the rest of the eastern hills are just that, hills. also, due to weather patterns, we eastern skiers are well practiced in skiing on shit snow, unlike western powderbunny fags. They have double or better the vertical on top of nice powder. Europe doesn't have as nice a snow as the west, but, you got about 12 miles of vertical in some places in the alps. Actually, more like 2 miles of vertical. Anyway, those places are what I would call "world class".

If you are refering to the facilities, I'd say who, WGARA. The facilities are nice, but they don't allow you to ski for 45 minutes straight without standing in a lift line.

Over a half mile of vertical drop is as good as it gets anywhere east of the Rockies. And the skiiing was good enough for the IOC. Which ought to tell you something about the quality of the mountain. You know, if you're paying attention and stuff.

not saying whiteface isn't a nice hill. not saying that you can't set up a reasonably nice downhill course. just saying that your average rich jet setter ski bum doesn't say, well muffy, where to this weekend? val'd'sere (sp) or whiteface?

world class is the US west and the alps and maybe a few other exotic places. btw, there is more vertical than the rockies ever dreamed of in the alps. I believe you can ski from pretty much the summit of mt blanc, around 15K all the way into town down in the valley, somewhere around 2-3K. WELL over 10K straight fukking down!!!!

I believe they turned the Olympic Village into a prison of some sort, or at least they were talking about it.

smac, who the hell in their right mind wants to ski 45 minutes all in a row? I'll keep my short, east coast runs and 1 beer up the mountain chair ride, thank you very much!

If all you care about is vertical drop, then you might just as well move to the south of France and be done with it. But tell me that's not ALL there is?

Anyway, here's another tip for those traveling to Placid. Have lunch at this place.

The food is good, the view is absolutely spectacular.

Did you get any golf in? Craig Wood and Lake Placid Club's Links Course have kicked my ass a few times each.

We hosted my buddies batchelor party here. Rented a house right on the lake. Really nice place. Check out the Olympic Ice Rink for the history of the 1980 Hockey Team. I also took the bobsled run and it was well worth it. Always wanted to do that. If you do take the bobsled then I will fill you in on a little secret. Even though it seems like your going to die on the last turn.....you don't......

Thanks, Men!

I appreciate the knowledge!
I will be going there Dec. 27- Jan. 2. I did not even think about Bobsledding!! I am psyched!!

Thanks for the links, BSmack!

I ski but i wanted to do more than skiing and it seems like there is plenty to do there.

Some other time I will try skiing out west. I couldn't pass on this opportunity.

BSmack, Neely, what is the cost per Bobsled run and how long does it last? or do you pay by the hour?

BTW: If you have skates, bring them. The Olympic Speed Skating Oval is open to the public. http://www.orda.org is your friend.

Don't forget to take the 1-2 hour drive north to Montreal. Take a walk down St. Catherines street with the wife and kids. You won't be disappointed....

no, vertical isn't everything, but, it is a really big thing in a sport where it gets kinda boring when you run out of it.

just pointing out that "world class" is a bit of a stretch when describing the place from a skiing perspective.

How the fukk has a "high peaks wilderness" reference not yet been ridiculed by you know who.

must be an internet outage in the U&L.

If you insist...

The highest point in New York is apparently 5344 feet.

It's actually possible to cross the Cascades without going over 5344 feet. Of course, they put those roads through the low spots.

There's a ski resort below 5344 feet on Mt Hood. Of course with the higher temps of the last 10-15 years or so, it's generally a big slush field.
