Any of you buttpirates...
...ever give money to a political candidate?
I was listening to, horrah of horrah's, NPR on the way home tonight and one of the analysts was talking about how a win in Iowa can mean a lot of money to the winner, moreso than even 20 years or so in the past. Early primary wins have always meant a boost in cayshe but in the past you had to write a check and put it in the mail. Then there's a delay while the mail works, and then somebody needs to deposit the check. They're saying that after tonight millions of people (well they didn't say millions, but a lot) will be getting on the web and making credit card donations of $5, $10, $100 dollars. You could be out of money this morning and, with a win, rolling in $millions by tomorrow.
That may be true, but I personally don't get it. In the first place I've never given money to any of these crooks, and I'm pretty sure they're all crooks at heart. Even if I was the type to donate I don't think I'd be moved by a win in Iowa to get out my credit card and throw tomorrow's lunch money down the drain.

Good thinking Mikey. Why get involved in the political process ? Save your hard earned money. I gave Barney Fife five dollars back when he was running for High Sherrif and all he did was use it to pay his rent to Mrs.Mendlebright. Then he still went and wrote me a up ticket for jaywalking a week later.

I once gave $10 to a friend of mine who was running for Town Justice.
I also gave $25 once to my former Congresswoman (I don't live in her district anymore). That's it.

Re: Any of you buttpirates...
I got semi shanghai'ed into given some nog who was forcibly cleaning car windshields on an off ramp in LA a buck. I don't know what the fuck i was thinking. His whiny "I got kids", combined with my really bad day made me cave.
He was a resident abuser there though, so the next time I took that same ramp I waited until he was within striking distance and I stabbed the washer/wiper button. Fuck him.
First and last time I ever gave money to a crook.
The only difference between that nog and a pol is that both would promise to wash the windshield. Nog would do it, and it would be better but still be sorta dirty and it would cost you a buck. Politician would promise to do it if you voted for him but end up not doing it and it would still be dirty, and in addition the day care center down the street where your kids went would be closed a week after you voted for the fucker due to reallocation for funds to create a car wash nearby.
I probably should have doubled the nogs income instead.

Re: Any of you buttpirates...
I've never contributed to a national candidate. None of them has ever seemed truly deserving of my money or energy.
Local (town and village level)? Yep. I knew the folks I chose to support, got them to answer my specific concerns (and even if I disagreed with them, they were at least honest and I knew where they stood), and I understand the limits of what they can/cannot do within the legal powers of their offices. And this past year, I was damned happy that the candidates I supported in local elections actually won.
The local Democrats embarrassed the crap out of themselves in our town election - they pandered to the college students by making a YouTube video aimed at them in which the town supervisor candidate claimed that a vote for Democrats in the village and town elections was a "vote against George Bush." He also implied that the local candidates who received the Conservative Party endorsement were racist and sexist (because he describes their NYS platform as such). The Dems did the math and figured that the predominantly liberal student body, if mobilized to vote en masse, could sweep them into office.
Problem was, word of the video quickly spread to the "townies."
Yeah, THAT went over really well. The Dem attempt to have students decide the local election mobilized the townies, pissed off a hell of a lot of the candidates' friends and colleagues, and ...[GASP!]...failed to mobilize the students to vote. The Dems got SPANKED in the town supervisor race.

THE BIBLE - Because all the works of all the science cannot equal the wisdom of cattle-sacrificing primitives who thought every animal species in the world lived within walking distance of Noah's house.
