No. 5 Jaguars (12-5) at No. 1 Patriots (16-0) -- Discussion
No official prediction yet, but I wanted to get the thread up for discussion.
The Faguars can give NE a lot of trouble if they don't fall behind early.
If NE hits some plays and puts points up early it might be a long day though.
No secret that Jacksonville wants to run, run, run ... and run some more.
They should have some success with it.
More later .....
Thoughts?

This is the game I'm most looking forward to this weekend. J-ville isn't expected to have a chance in hell of winning, so they come in with nothing to lose and zero pressure playing the spoiler role. And they just might play that role well.
Loves me some the two-headed monster RB tandem of Taylor and Jones Drew. Garrard is also a threat to take off running at any time for big chunks.
I can't quite bring myself to call for the Jags to win in a monumental upset, but man would I love it if they shit all over the Patsies perfect season, dropping them to 16-1 and booting them from the Playoffs.
Should be a great game.

New England is going to put 8 in the box and rely on their man coverage to stop Gerrard's passing game. No way NE allows Taylor and Jones-Drew to get off. J-ville lacks a lot of speed in their receiving core, but they have size on NE's secondary. If Gerrard can throw some accurate "over the top" passes to his receivers, then that will force NE to play more cover 2 or tampa 2.
New England's offense is what it is; unstoppable. In saying that, all I have seen is the opposition play zone coverage so they won't get beat by Moss. I think Jville will blitz a lot and rely on their physical bump and run play to get the NE receivers off their routes. Maroney will not have much success, so Brady, Moss & Co. will do it through the air.

I think this one depends on the weather. If it comes down to the run game NE will find themselves in a tuff situation.
Jax will have to win the clock just to have a shot on this one. They can also have no let downs.
It would be nice to see the Pats go down but I think we will have to wait another week on that one.

Its supposed to be in the 30's and clear. No precipitation in the forecast. Good thing too because the Pats could never throw the ball in bad weather. Brady's numbers in the Raider Tuck game out front could tell you that......

I was just kind of curious where you people get the impression the running team wins in "bad weather"?
The team that executes short routes has a HUGE advantage over the "running team" that doesn't. HUGE.
And last I checked, didn't NE have the most effective, successful slot receiver in the NFL?
While in "bad weather" Jax' ability to run the ball and grind the clock would be helpful in "keeping Brady off the field," that's about the only strategic advantage it would have. In questionable footing, a RB is at a disadvantage. A slot receiver gains an advantage.
Basic Pacific Northwest Football 101. Hence the Run & Shoot.

I figured this was probably going to be a fairly close football game.
That is, until Jag DE Paul Spicer started bumping his gums again about how the NFL should "Do like the NCAA and kick them out of the playoffs or something. Put them on probation; they can't go to no playoff games." over the whole ridiculous "Spygate" crap. That was right after it happened. Spicer this week WILL NOT back off his comments. "It's my opinion, that's all it was," Spicer said. "This is four months later. It's about the playoffs. It's about the Jaguars, what we can do to beat the Patriots. We haven't done research like they did, didn't go back and look at everything they said over the season and see if we can use that to get motivated to go play. You shouldn't need what somebody else says to get you motivated. This is the NFL. It's a playoff game. You guys are undefeated. We're coming up there. That's enough right there to get motivated. I know I'm motivated."
Guess what dipshit? I'm pretty sure the Patriots just got a whole lot MORE "motivated" for this game. But wait...there's MORE. On ESPN's "Sportscenter" tonight they showed a NFL Power Rankings page right off the Jaguars' website. Of course the Patriots were the #1 team in the rankings....with a BIG FAT "*" right next to it. When they scrolled down to the bottom of the page right there in bold type it clarified the asterisk with the following:
*-CAUGHT CHEATING IN WEEK 1
Which reminds me of the chorus in a Jim Croce song.....You don't tug on Superman's cape, You don't spit into the wind, You don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger, And you don't mess around with Bill Belichick's Boys. This one's gonna get chippy and dowright UGLY. All I can say is that the Florida boys had best make their tee times after Sat. night-

The Pats are only like the '72 'Phins in that, as you said, they just get the job done.
NE is playing arena ball, while the '72 Dolphins played like they were a leather helmet era team -- just pounding the run game relentlessly w/Csonka, Kiik and Morris.

It's insane comments like this that will only add to the mystique of the Pats when they butt fuck the Jags in the mouth Saturday night. I can't believe on ESPN that only like 68% of people are picking NE. Once the Pats go up 14-0 the game is over. All this talk about the way to beat the Pats is by running and keeping Brady and crew on the sidelines is silly. There is only one way to beat the Pats this year and that is to outscore them because they WILL put points on the board. Indy is the only team, AFC or NFC, that has the right mix to pull out the W. We'll find out next week.Papa Willie wrote:Right now, they may have a better shot at beating the Pats than anybody else - including the Colts.

Asterisk next to Pats' record removed from Jaguars' Web site
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The asterisk the Jacksonville Jaguars had on their Web site next to New England's perfect record, a mark indicating the Patriots were caught cheating in one game this season, has been removed.
The Jaguars, who play at New England in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs Saturday night, decided to remove the asterisk Friday.
Jaguars.com senior editor Vic Ketchman put the asterisk next to the Patriots in his weekly "power rankings." Ketchman said he put it there in "an attempt at subtle humor." It remained there, mostly under the radar, for four months.
That changed this week, when several media outlets turned the asterisk into a story.
"All of a sudden, the subtle humor was gone," Ketchman wrote Friday. "All of a sudden, the asterisk was being treated as though it was critical commentary.
"Retracting our position? No way. Hey, it was up there for four months. There's no retracting that. The jaguars.com executive committee just decided ... to take it down because our position had become distorted."
Ketchman added that he "never thought an asterisk could cause such a disturbance," citing all the e-mail he received this week from angry Patriots fans.

Yeah, well I'm still quite confident that the Patriots are gonna kick some SERIOUS asterisks on Sat. night.![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

The only chance the Jags have is if they're running game helps them keep Brady and the crew off the field and they win the turnover battle...or at least break even if Brady doesn't throw any picks. You aren't going to outscore the Pats, obviously...you just need to limit their number of possessions or the amount of time they have the ball. If you turn the ball over, can't run and use up clock and wear down their defense...you don't have a prayer. I think the Jags might hang in for one half but the Pats will pull away in the second half.
