Big 12 Thoughts

Post by Mook »

A few thoughts I've had while watching Big 12 games.....

Texas: This team has one of the ugliest offenses I've ever seen. A typical 'Horn possession goes something like this; Augustin dribbles off 15-25 seconds of the shot clock, typically standing at the top of the key pounding a hole in the floor with the ball; then he will penetrate and most likely shoot, although occassionally he kicks out to a teammate for a rushed shot. Hideous offense and I'm not sure how the rest of the team stays involved, or even interested. The scarier part to me is that this seems to be just the style of play Barnes is going for. Augustin is a very nice player, but that offense is just sad. Only in the NBA will you see one player dominate the ball for as much of each possession as Augustin does for Texas.

K-State: Michael Beasley is the best player in the country...the guy is a beast.

Oklahoma State: What is wrong with Sean Sutton....the guy looks like hell and tonight he sounded like hell too. He seriously looks unhealthy. I'm kind of worried about the guy.

Kansas: These guys don't suck...definitely a fun year to be a Jayhawk fan. And yes, the streak in Manhattan continues this year. I think it will be 25 or 26 years in row. In my opinion one of the most amazing streaks in sports.

That's all for now.....but I figured this board needed a topic for the week and it was probably my turn...

I noticed that too. I assume that he’s a rummy just like his old man.

Agreed.

What are the chances of him playing more than one year? I'd say slim and none, and slim wants the fuck out the little apple. Definitely a lottery pick. This guy is Kevin Durant, only stronger.

This team is scary good and pretty much has no weakness. Depth all around, and very experienced. Should be an odds on favorite to reach the Final Four, if not win it all.

Beasley's guaranteed a win, though, and I wouldn't be surprised if K-State finally ends that ridiculous streak.

WHOA!

Thanks for taking time off from your job as an NBA analyst to post that for us.
This guy is Kevin Durant
Let's hope not.

Sin,
Winner of NBA Lottery

NCAA-wise, statistically speaking, quite comparible to Durant. Except Durant never seems to give a shit about winning and losing, so long as he gets his.

I know this is a B12 thread, not an NBA thread, but if I was a voter, I'd have an awfully hard time giving ROY to Durant. I know Carlissimo is a shit coach (ohhhh, how Blazerfan knows what a shit coach he is), but Durant has made that team worse. Obviously, they traded away a lot. But with Durant in there, none of the other young players are ever going to develop, and that team is going nowhere anytime soon.

Hell, Durant managed to miss 20 freaking shots in a game. It's not very often a rook is ever going to take 20 shots, much less miss 20 shots.

The Shlongics have played 44 games. In those 44 games, you know how many times Durant has made at least half of his boatload of shots?

Three.

Yeah, you read that right. And he just got #3 the other day.

This guy had red flags all over him in college. Of course, when I brought this up a few months ago, people thought I was crazy.

The guy is a "volume shooter" who can't muster 40% from the floor. From 3pt, he's at 28%. Yeah, you read that right, too -- 28%. But that doesn't stop him from taking his 3.7 attempts per game... in comparison, the top 3 3pt shooters in the NBA (percentage-wise) take 2.2, 3.6, and 3.7, respectively.

For a guy who dominates the ball like Durant does, his rebounding numbers are just freaking hideous. The guy stands next to the basket all night and musters 0.7 offensive boards (I hate that stat-btw, but a "camper" should get lots) and 4.1 total? Are you kidding me? Put it this way -- that's about the same boards as Ray Allen is getting -- and no one is going to accuse Movie Star of being much of a rebounder, due to his Charmin-like nature. Gee, I guess that whole "dude can't bench 185" thing really did mean something, eh?

Obviously, it's much too early to start throwing the "bust" tag around... he's still super-young, and his team sucks. But the dude is undoubtedly teetering on the edge of that chasm.

And quite frankly, Blazerfan is laughing his balls off. A bad knee and a missed year sounds a whole lot better than a franchise-killing me-first guy. Wouldn't trade Oden for Durant AND Seattle's pick in the coming draft... not a chance.

My buddy summed it up best almost a year ago. He's a high school techer, and was asked by a student about the draft. Kid asked "do you really think Durant won't be as good a player as Oden, Mr. C?" My bro told him "I'll go one farther -- Durant will never be as good as Brandon Roy, much less Greg Oden."

Nails.

And, as it relates to the topic at hand -- I don't see the same red flags with Beasley that Durant had. Too early to tell, of course.

But I still don't think Beasley will be enough to get KState past Kansas, who are just a well-oiled machine right now. Coming down the stretch, it's looking to be yet another awesome February/March in the NCAA, as usual (except for the part where my team can't hit a shot, and might as well have me out there playing point, but that's another issue).

I watched little tiny bits and pieces of the San Francisco game last night -- and maybe my memory is bad, but I don't recall them really showing Sutton on the bench. Maybe he was passed out in the locker room?

Actually, I guess I did see him briefly -- with his head in his hands... not sure if that was in disgust at losing, or just to support his wobbly head.

RACK BtH-btw.

Missouri: Apparently chock full of thugs and gangsta-wannabes, they now officially don't have any shot at making ANY post-season tournament.... http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3221003" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

ya' know, it's really difficult to talk shit to my Gayhawk aquaintenances, whom I tend to bump into every damn day, when shit like this keeps happening.

Them: Nice bar fight. Your Tigger pussies got their asses kicked. By the women's softball team infield. All four of them. At least it was a fair fight.

Me: Oh, yeah? Well your 2nd string kicker got arrested for having his dog off a leash, so there.

I'm shocked.

Sin,

nobody who's ever watched a Rick Barnes coached team before
"Our staff is going to ensure that anyone who attends this University and wears the Indiana uniform will make this privilege among their highest priorities and not treat the opportunity as an entitlement,'' Crean said in a statement. "We fully expect our student-athletes to accept the responsibilities academically, athletically and socially that come with representing one of the top programs in college basketball history."
