petty, steve winwood announce tour

Post by Screw_Michigan »

another summer, another tom petty tour. no real surprise there. but the HUGE surprise is STEVE FUCKING WINWOOD opening for TP. the only confirmed date of him doing this is for the tour opener in grand rapids on 5/30, but i'm sure that won't be the only time SW opens for TP on the tour.

needless to say, i'm a HUGE HUGE HUGE winwood fan and have always wanted the chance to see him live. he's still got a kicking voice and his tunes are legendary. i only hope they give him more than the standard 1/2 hour allotted for opening acts. SW deserves at least 1-1 1/2 hours.

summer's coming!!!!!!!!

Saw him prolly 15 years ago in San Diego, with Robert Cray opening. A very good show.

It's amazing how Winwood can play all those instruments at the same time.

i had arc of a diver stuck in my head for about a week last month.

i like most of the traffic stuff, especially traffic and Mr. Fantasy. low spark is a great tune. it's too bad the only Spencer Davis tune you ever hear is gimme some lovin....."i'm a man" is a pretty cool one. the way it opens is nice.

Will JS Bach be opening for him?

Robert Johnson, maybe?

If we're just going to prop a corpse up against a microphone stand, why not go big?

If by "fine," you mean "bilkiing post-pubescent tards out of their hard earned money to go see a show fuelled by Geritol rather than blow because they think it gives them 'classic rock cred' "... then I guess you're right.

Saw Petty with the Dead and Dylan back in 86 just a week before Garcia went into his first diabetic coma. Though I'm still not a huge Petty fan, I have to give him his props as a consummate showman. That being said, I won't be bothering with this year's tour. Or any other dinosaur rock acts. Watching The Who butcher Quadrophenia ten years ago soured me on classic rock revival tours. Though I might make an exception if Zeppelin tickets become a possibility.

I thought that was 87, but who cares, splitting hairs.

That being said, I won't be bothering with this year's tour.

Fuck Zep, too.

Only one I'd see would be The Other Ones. Sure, they're older than dirt, but that band just kept getting better and better the older they got, and didn't suffer the same effects of aging as others (RACK drugs).

Saw "The Dead" a couplefew years ago, whenever that was, and the sound was good, but there was a little lack of energy. (Saw them at the Not-In-The-Gorge Amphitheater... great place for show, if they'd just change the name).

FUCK geriatric shows. Blues acts, jazz acts... bring on the old-timers. Aging rock acts, even ones I used to love... you can keep them. I've paid hundreds and hundreds of bucks over the years seeing them... and I wouldn't give a nickel to see another... although I'm sure there's exceptions*.

Almost went and saw the Dandy Warhols a couple of weeks ago... and that fucker is ancient.

To be precise, it was July 4th, 1986 at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, NY.

My first Grateful Dead show.
Fuck Zep, too.
It depends on how much it's going to cost me. I'd be willing to spend up to 200 for my wife and I. That's of course assuming that they ever play a gig within driving distance of Rochester (Buffalo, Toronto, Syracuse or Albany).

Saw Phil and Friends, Bruce Hornsby, Hot Tuna and Ratdog on the first Further Tour the year after Garcia died. It was a good enough show but lacking, as you say, that "energy" of a full on Grateful Dead show.

Like I said, there's very few time I won't agree with you on that score.

I'll agree with that too.

My parents took me to see Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman (not at the same time) when I was a kid. I'll never forget either of those shows. Saw John Lee Hooker and Lightnin' Hopkins at small venues back in the 80s. Both awesome shows. BB King in Vegas along with Dr. John and Little Feat (sans Lowell obviously) about 10 years ago. He was great too.

The old jazz and blues guys may lose some dexterity as they age but they make up for it in soul and innate talent. Most aging rock stars just rehash old shit.

The wife and I went to see Michael McDonald at one of the local casinos a couple of years ago. He had a great band, but you can only take so much rehashed What a Fool Believes and Takin' it to the Streets before it gets unbearably tedious.

One exception to the rule...

Saw Jeff Beck at the Greek Theater last year. That dude can still fucking play. Of course he doesn't fit too neatly into the "aging rock star" niche either.

I'd gladly pay to see Van Morrison.

And probably Steely Dan.

Other than that, I agree that dinosaur acts suck.

So you go see people perform, and they die shortly after? Any chance you can be in Rochester this weekend?

I'm pretty sure Hanna Montana has already passed through our fair town.
