Dr. Z: I'm Tired of Being the A-hole
http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/01/ ... him-the-f/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I then asked Zimmerman about the upcoming Pro Football Hall of Fame selection meeting, which is on the day before the Super Bowl. Zimmerman is one of the selectors, and he recently changed his mind about former Redskins receiver Art Monk, saying that after years of being the most vocal opponent of Monk's enshrinement, he will now vote for Monk. So what changed his mind?
"I figured, just put him the f--- in already," Zimmerman told me. "I'm tired of being the a--hole."
This is the most glaring ommission from the Hall of Fame. It's embarrassing for the NFL to have this void from Canton.
Here are a couple quotes to digest:
Ronnie Lott: "Art Monk was an example for Jerry Rice. That's what Jerry always told me."
Bill Parcells: "Monk is headed to Canton downhill on roller skates"
Bill Belichick, 1990 as D-coordinator of the Giants: "Monk is one of the best receivers I've ever seen. I wish he would retire already."
Who do you think knows more about football? Lott/Rice/Parcells/Belichick, or Dr. Z and Peter King?
I have yet to hear a former player or coach or even a fan of a rival team say that he doesn't belong. So who are these people who keep voting against him? Some pussy writers who got their feelings hurt some time ago because Monk wouldn't talk to them.

Re: Dr. Z: I'm Tired of Being the A-hole
I love how that argument ONLY applies to Art Monk, yet for some reason it doesn't apply to these receivers: your boy Charlie Joiner (Hall of Famer), or Lynn Swann (Hall of Famer) or John Stallworth (Hall of Famer) or James Lofton (Hall of Famer), Fred Belitnikof (Hall of Famer), etc.mvscal wrote:He was never the focal point of his own offense let alone a dominating player at his position. He averaged a whopping 4.25 touchdowns per year over 16 years.
Monk was a chain-mover, dominated in playoff games, redefined the position of wide receiver and was an outstanding blocker.
You can nitpick any clear Hall of Famer. It's like looking at Ozzie Smith and saying "well, he wasn't that great of a hitter" when you know that he was one of the best players at his position during his era.
So let's nitpick with Steve Largent while we're at it. "Well, he never went to a Super Bowl, so that's hardly Hall of Fame stuff."
Basically if you are of the belief that Art Monk is not worthy of the Hall of Fame, you have no place in the conversation because you're a complete moron who knows nothing about football.

Re: Dr. Z: I'm Tired of Being the A-hole
Rice modelling his game after Monk not enough for you? The fact that after him and towards the end of his career you started to see other tall receivers who made clutch catches in traffic coming into the league? (Irvin, Sharpe, Carter, etc.) And way to conveniently skip over my other points.mvscal wrote:What a load of bullshit. mvscal doesn't believe anything he is saying right now. Its just his ass-hole MO. One day, he will get tired of being the a-hole and agree with the likes of everyone here. Count on it.

So one could presume Tim Brown is out too?
RJ and Pt will be in shortly.

Both Brown and Rice hung around for a long time and compiled numbers. Just because there are less deserving receivers in the Hall doesn't mean those two should be in.RumpleForeskin wrote:So one could presume Tim Brown is out too?

Oh, so sorry, but there's no precedent for inducting falconbacks into the Hall.
While he may indeed be the greatest falconback of all time, we don't really have any other falconbacks to compare him to.
No soup for you, falconback.

Yes, I'm biased, but I think Reed should get in before Monk.

If you mean like Roids Merriman, then I agree. Otherwise STFU.mvscal wrote:Another one dimensional slappy.

Oh.
Then why don't you be so kind as to post up his tackling stats to confirm what a deadly run-stopper he is...
Oh. Nevermind.
Not particularly effective against the run, and absolutely horrific in pass coverage. Excellent pass rusher, though.
So in other words... he's a falconback. He's possibly one of Thomas' illegitimate children, they're so similar.

Bullshit- RoidBoy couldn't cover a good TE (like Tony G.) if his life depended on it.mvscal wrote:Wrong. Merriman is a complete outside linebacker.
Thomas wasn't even a linebacker. He was a pass rushing specialist or "falconback" who was a liability against the run and was totally lost in coverage.
You're right about one thing with DT- he WAS a pass-rushing specialist, BUT he got progressively better and better over the course of his career at pass coverage AND against the run. His sack, QB pressures, and forced fumble #s speak for themselves for his admittance to the HOF.

1a. Art Monk
i've been on these boards for 8 years...and we've had the same yadda about it.

I'm still waiting on those tackling numbers... if you need help finding them, scroll wayyyy down the list of linebackers... like wayyyyy down, and you'll find them.
Although I do believe he was the taclking leader among falconbacks.

Wow, that was a serious loss of composure.
Hey, and Shannon will likely end up in the Hall before the late D. Thomas will.
That's another kick in the 'nads.
The way this has all played out, it wouldn't shock me to learn that the all-time TE yardage leader is fuckin' one or more of Derrick's ...... five 'wives' ..... yeah.
Shit.
Pretty much 'bode everywhere you look.

Nah, Derrick was thought by many more of a radio personality, but the broadcast company just wouldn't stand for all the dead air when hosting his show.

Sharpe's a 1st ballot HOFer. No disputing that. But it's too bad DT didn't finish ripping his fucking head off and shitting down his neck in that Monday Nighter either. I seem to recall another story. Something about Sharpe tapping one of Thomas' many hoes the prior night and giving EVERYBODY on the field a "blow by blow" account of the experience.RevLimiter wrote:Sharpe deserved it- he was deliberately diving at Wayne Simmons' knees before that happened and DT had his back.BSmack wrote:You have a point. Besides, we all know Thomas would have never been that close to the point of attack on a running play.
