Great game, for a change. The Super Bowl is usually a snore.
Ironic that for all of Belichik's evil genius reputation, the game might have come down to a coaching blunder. Granted, a 49-yard FG attempt is hardly a gimme, but in the NFL, you gotta think that any team has a better chance of making one of those than of converting on 4th and 13. Had they kicked the FG and made it, the game would have gone to OT.

Can't fault bellichik on that call, terry. a 49 yarder is a loooong fucking fg and when you have a passing game like theirs, you gotta think you can make it.
If it's a 45 yarder, I'll buy your arguement. Otherwise it's just monday morning QBing.
Where I think bellichik did fukk up is in not giving the running game more of a chance. Mulroney has come up big for them lately and it might have slowed that gman pass rush a bit.

Re: RACK the Super Bowl
Smackaholic,
If it was earlier in the game, or if the situation had been, say, 4th and 5, I would buy your argument. But that decision came in the 3rd quarter, not the 1st. By that time, enough of the game had gone by for Belichik to know that his offense was struggling, much more than usual, that points, and for that matter, scoring opportunities, in the game were precious, and that the game might very well be decided by 7 points or less.
I haven't looked up stats for this, but I would have to think that in the NFL, the percentages favor converting a 49-yard FG attempt over a conversion on 4th and 13.

I agree. Brady wasn't getting any time to throw, and the few times he did, his precision was off. Shoulda went for the FG.

Bingo. Dude has a career long of 52. A pooch punt would have been a better choice than to go for it. Absolutely horrible decision.Terry in Crapchester wrote:Smackaholic,

RACK. Add to that, Brady had only completed a handful of passes longer than 10 yards to that point. Most of his completions were 7 or 8yd gains to Welker or Faulk.Bingo. Dude has a career long of 52. A pooch punt would have been a better choice than to go for it. Absolutely horrible decision.
On a somewhat related note... Mega-racks to Kevin Faulk for pulling his hammy, going to the locker room for a painkilling shot and going right back in the game. I'm guessing that felt well below average on Monday morning...

Not attempting A FG does't make sense. NE has gone for it on 4th and 5, 6, or even 7 all year long... and made most of them. However, 13 yards is too long to be messing around in this type of game. To put this in perspective, Scott Norwood misses a 47 yarder and is villified for life. The Gostkowski attempt would have been 48 yards by my math (31+17)... basically the same distance. Not a gimme, but surely a better choice than throw into double coverage into the endzone.
Not that I'm saying that's why they lost. They got outhustled all day long (3 balls hit the turf, all recovered by NY… not getting the Eli fumble at the NY 30 in the 2nd Q when a NE defender fell right on the ball and was stripped by Bradshaw was unacceptable) Asante Samuel -- drop the game ending INT much? Ty Warren -- let Eli out of your grasp much? Rodney Harrison -- get outplayed for a game turning catch much? The Giants, in the end, simply fought harder and made the plays necessary to win. It's what champions do.
The coaches, got outcoached. The players got outplayed. RACK the Giants.

How is that "unacceptable"? Guys get stripped all the time in the pile. The problems with that play were:ucantdoitdoggieSTyle2 wrote:...not getting the Eli fumble at the NY 30 in the 2nd Q when a NE defender fell right on the ball and was stripped by Bradshaw was unacceptable.
1. The refs totally blew that call. When one player clearly has possession and is then rolled over by an opposing player and stripped of the ball, how do you award possession to the guy who comes out of the pile with it? Horrible missed call on that one.
2. Bellichick should have tossed the red flag on that play. There was conclusive video evidence (that I'm sure was shown on the jumbotron) that his guy had clear possession of the ball before being stripped. I can't imagine that call not being overturned by the replay official.
Other than that, i agree with pretty much everything else you said.
I'm sure all of the jerkoff Yankee "fans" will be rushing to their local mall this week so they can sport a brand-spanking-new Giants jersey and act like a complete tool.

I can't speak for all Yankees fans, but that won't be me. I'll admit to rooting for the Giants in the Super Bowl for the following reasons:OCmike wrote:I'm sure all of the jerkoff Yankee "fans" will be rushing to their local mall this week so they can sport a brand-spanking-new Giants jersey and act like a complete tool.
1. When my team isn't in it, I tend to root for the underdog. I was also a little sick of the run the Patriots were getting (although, OTOH, if the Patriots had closed the deal, it would've put the '72 Dolphins away forever, and that's not a bad thing), and . . .
2. I'm primarily an NFC guy at heart.
But, I'm a 49ers fan, not a Giants fan. I have no interest in a Giants jersey, of any sort (although my kid has been a fan of Tiki Barber ever since he bought Tiki and Ronde's kids book from the school book sale).

As a fellow Niners fan, I feel your pain, since they haven't been in it in 13 years :brad:.
I have no problem with the Giants winning, as it's good to see some fresh blood take home the trophy, but I would have loved the patriots winning just so I'd never have to see that coke-tooting loser Mercury Morris on my TV screen ever-fucking again. The rest of the Dolphins seem to be fairly good-humored about the whole thing, but that loser hangs onto that season like he's Al Bundy talking about his storied H.S. football career. It was 30+ years ago...get over it, loser. Jesus, I mean, get a hobby or something.

Re: RACK the Super Bowl
Woods never secured possession. It’s unacceptable because dude fell right on top it but never put his arms around it. Just belly-flopping on the ball does not equate to a recovery, unless of course, you’re KCF Paul 3.0 and the Muffin Top spilling out from beneath your uniform affords complete coverage over everything in a 3 foot radius. I am quite sure that the refs did not blow the call nor did NE miss out on a reversible play.OCmike wrote:How is that "unacceptable"? Guys get stripped all the time in the pile.
Re: RACK the Super Bowl
It looked to me like he had the ball secured. And besides, Bradshaw wasn't able to strip him of it until he had flipped him over.

I don't know how they let that long sideline pass play to Toomer go, either. He clearly pushed off, hand right in the defenders facemask. It gave him enough separation 39 yards downfield and room to make the catch, and there was no flag.

Jesus Christ, you all are really splitting cunt hairs here. I've seen a lot worse officiating in my life. Sunday night's game wasn't perfect, neither is any other game for that matter. I'm sure Brian will be in shortly to tell us how there was holding on that 30+ yard scramble by Gerrard to seal the deal for the Jags a few weeks back. Get over it. Fucking pushoffs and ball exchanging hands in a dog pile is a part of the game. Fuckin' crybabies.

The pushoff was pretty bad, but I'm sure there were pushoffs on the other side that weren't called, so I'm not bent about that at all. I'm all for a "let 'em play" attitude from the refs when it comes to the playoffs and SB...to a point, of course.
Balls exchanging hands in a pile are totally a part of the game, I agree completely. The exception to this though is when a guy clearly has possession before the pileon and someone else comes out with the ball. That's bullshit and can totally change a game, as it might have in this case.

I thought the same thing about that fumble pig pile. Why is it when an RB or QB goes down with the ball, the nanosecond a knee touches, it's considered dead, but, when there is a fumble pig pile, they allow this free for all bullshit. The rules should be just as they are in other situations, you pile on and it's a late hit.
And toofer got away with an obvious pushoff. There is incidental contact where "let'em play" is the way to go. That was not incidental. That was him sticking a hand in the face of the defender and pushing him away. How the fukk does bellichik catch a ridiculous 12 man call and miss this one?

Pass Interference or any penalties like that are subjective. They are not reviewable. If they were then every play would be reviewed basically.
12 men on the field is because a ref can go actually count the number of players on the video screen.
