Big Monday on ESPN

Post by War Wagon »

After suffering thru yet another Big Least 60-59 snoozer or whatever bore fest that went long, it sure is nice to watch some exciting Big XII brand of B-ball.

Texas and Kansas putting on a barnburner of a show.

you think we'll EVER get to see the first 5 minutes of the Big XII Big Monday game on a regular basis? :x

that said, UT did a nice job on the renovations to the Erwin Center. that place is still too big, but it used to be a morgue. seats right up to the floor these days.

Shit mang, there's been times we've missed almost the entire 1st half while Villanova and Providence went to an epic 63-62 OT. :brad:

I feel lucky if we get there before the first TV timeout.

You know what's really funny? The two teams that Kansas has lost to are teams that Mizzou beat. Silver linings. :D

But that was a fucking war.

Kansas got rattled and didn't play with their usual poise down the stretch. They'll learn from and be better for that experience. If there's such a thing as a "good" loss, that was it.

First off the Big Monday thing is really starting to piss me off. The Big East games ALWAYS run late and if it weren't for possibly the worst officiating call of the decade in the G'Town/Nova game last night we would have missed a good portion of the first half of the UT/KU game. Every single week this happens. Honestly, I'm much happier when Kansas isn't on Big Monday because at least I know I'll get to see the game. It's frustrating really. ESPN should put these games on ESPN News or something until the Big East game ends. Of course, this is the same network who put KU/MU on freaking ESPNU.....what do they care.

Now on to the game. Obviously there is no shame in getting beat in Austin but what troubles me about this and any "Coach" Self team is their lack of composure in even relatively close games. Once the collar starts to get to tight the ball movement stops on offense; there is lots of one on one play; many poor shots hoisted and numerous turnovers. The next time Kansas runs a great play out of a timeout at the end of a close game will be only the second or third time it's happened. KU also takes a lot of gambles defensively when they get behind leading to easy buckets or follows for the other team. Once again, I'm not complaining, just noting a pattern that I have seen and commented on about Self teams for several years. They are unorganized and rattle easily in close games. I certainly hope we don't play any close games in March.....Good God, Rick Barnes outcoached Kansas last night, 'nuff said.

All that said, this is not a cry for "Coach" Self's job or even a slap at it. Self's best attribute is his ability to recruit top-notch talent and to me that is an almost bigger part of the job anymore than being a great game coach. I'd rather go to battle with the better players than the better coach eight days a week. I just realize that we don't have the world's greatest gameday coach. I like the guy and hope he stays at Kansas for 20 years; I just know that if that is the case there will be a thread or two about his "coaching" prowess each year! :)

Sin,

Last year's regional final vs. UCLA

I really want to say that this team isn't soft, but they are. You can't fastbreak your way to a title.

I don't think they are soft at all.....I think their defensive scheme puts them in some very bad positions. The super tight pressure 40 feet from the hoop inevitably leads to breakdowns when help has to come over.....I think that type of "d" is very good situationally I just think they overuse it, particularly in close games. I've said it before and I'll say it again this team does not look composed offensively or defensively at the end of tight games and they haven't for several years now.

One thing I am not concerned about is the three point shooting. They've had a couple of tough games but they'll get that back together.

My problem is Barnes coached a very god 37 minutes and then reverted back to Augustine just dribbling and driving the last 3 minutes of the ball game. That could have cost UT the game. Why they weren't still running double screens for Abrams down the stretch baffled me.

Just what I was thinking. It just in not fair to the Big 12 teams, I would say the same if it were the reverse for the Big East.

ucant

the conference smack thingie was more about frustration over never getting to see the first 5-8 minutes of the Big Monday late game while waiting for the last two minutes of the early Big Least game to play out. That part normally takes 20 minutes or more, god forbid overtime.

Hey, I'm sure the Least plays exciting games as well. Maybe they even play some defense, but I wouldn't know, since they usually put me right to sleep as soon as I start watching.

You do realize that over that 20 year period you are talking shity about only the ACC has put more teams in the Final Four than the Big 12 schools (though they all weren't in the same conference for the entire period) and that no conference has put more than one team in in the Final Four than the Big 12 schools over that same period? Only the ACC has more #1 seeds in the tourny in the last 20 years as well...

it's clear that the Network thinks watching Providence shoot meaningless FT's or (especially) Jim Boehiem win a game is a helluva lot more important than watching two ranked teams play from the Big XII.

tough to win on the road when yer 1. down 20 at halftime 2. shoot less than 50% from the stripe in 23 attempts and 3. 30% from the field.

not a good combo. OU shoots about 65% from the FT line, so i can feel ya there.

This just in, but Tejas is on a roll. Pretty easy to see that beatdown coming. Didn't OSU just punk aTm on their home court? That had to leave a mark.

I'm still amazed that somehow Missou beat Texas in Columbia this year.

What amazes me is that anyone wanted to be sure not to miss the start of that game. Kind of justifies ESPN's MO re: the Big East/Big 12.

t.u. pressured the ball as soon as it crossed halfcourt. A&M just looked lost. We're unimpressing at the wrong time. We'll be a 5 seed at best barring a good run in the conference tourney. Still nice to talk A&M basketball with regard to the tourney. I have high hopes but low expectations. I just hope A&M continues to invest in the bball program and becomes relevant at some point year in and year out.

Here we go again with more SCS "facts" about the alleged Big 12 prowess.

SEC- 13
Big 12- 10
Big East- 9

and that no conference has put more than one team in in the Final Four than the Big 12 schools over that same period?
Final Fours with 2 teams from the same conference from the 88 FF:

ACC- 3 (90, 01, 04)

Big East- 3
Pac 10- 2
Big 12- 1
