you tards have any concerts coming up?

Post by Screw_Michigan »

it's going to be a good early 08 for me on the concert trail. i've got tickets to see the fourth night of a five night stint by wilco at the riv in chicago the third week of october. fri-sat-mon-tue-wed, and i got a pair to the tuesday show. all shows were sold out around eight hours after they went on sale. most importantly, jeff said the band is going to dig deep in the band's catalog and play as many different songs as possible amongst the five nights (pearl jam style). i must admit, there is still much of the band's work i haven't listened to (i'm still a yhf, ghost, being there, summerteeth guy), and i'm looking forward to breaking out some newer shit for the tour. this will be my third time seeing wilco and knowing it will be in a small venue and the special shit jeff has lined up, i'm sure it will be great. the last time i saw the band in a small venue was the state theatre in kzoo in 05 and the show has remained one of the best concerts i've ever seen. i'll never forget seeing "a shot in the arm" played up close. incredible.

i also have a pair of tix to see nada surf at metro in chi-town the first week of april. nada surf is one of my favorite bands that i've yet to see (right up there with wolf parade), so this will be definitely be straight. i've been a big fan of the band since a former co-worker at the kzoo gazette gave me a copy of "let go" in late 04, but i've always passed over seeing the band because 1) they toured so often and 2) there were other bands i really wanted to see that didn't play so frequently (or so i rationalized). i really wish i would have seen them on the "weight is a gift tour" because my dumbass didn't give that album a decent listen until november. i thought nothing could top let go. but i was very wrong. "weight" is much like let go, but at the same time, it's even better. and i believe the next album they release in february will be good. indie power pop at its sappiest, but most addictive. i do wish the drummer was a lot better live, though. he would put that band through another dimension.

and it's going to get even better this summer. radiohead has announced cities, but not dates, and i think we'll start getting more and more summer tour dates announced in february. a return of belle and sebastian to the u.s. would be good as well as possibly hearing from the pernice brothers.

I don't know if all cameras work the same way but usually you're able to push down the button part way to get your image into focus before you take the actual picture. My big problem is getting shaky hands and unintentionally blurring the picture. I also haven't gotten the hang of taking pictures inside an arena and getting proper lighting.

I saw your thread with your pictures at the ND hockey game...you seemed to do pretty well the first time out. Lots of motion blur but hockey is a tough sport to capture players in motion. I stick to getting pictures during the pregame skate when the path of motion is more predictable and you can follow them where they go. Using a quicker shutter speed works results in less motion blur and the key is to focus on the subject and not the background...just a few things I learned when I took black & white in college.

I have the new Nada Surf at work, but I haven't listened to it yet. To be honest, I haven't really heard anything of theirs since "Popular." I've heard they sound nothing like that nowadays. I'll give it a listen and post my thoughts...

They're in PGH in a week or so, I'll probably issue and get a gander at the dude's baby arm.

just got word Rush is hitting the road again in 2008...coming to Charlotte in July...will be checking that out...

hope that Lamb Of God goes out on tour again for something (no new album for 08 but hope they go on the road for a summer deal)

Hoping Korn also hits a US Leg...they are in Europe now...although the demise of Korn is near...Silveria left the band and Munky has left for some reason...

RACK. nice find. dates in detroit, chicago and DC. bought tickets for the chicago stop on the last go round but had to sell it because of a schedule conflict. i'd like to see them again for sure.

The Black Crowes are hitting the road this year for their new album coming out in the beginning of March. The nearest venue is Park West in Chicago in early March. I also see they're going to be at SXSW in March well. I might make another trip down to Texas this summer to visit my sister around the time of Austin City Limits. I might make my way towards my dad's neck of the woods in Milwaukee and see some shows during Summerfest. The Crowes were there on the 4th of July last year.

Dude... play Freebird.

I'll do a geriatric band at some pub... if they don't charge a cover. But the second they launch into the opening riffs of Jumping Fucktard Flash, I've got 5 seconds to slam my beer and get out the door.

No Freebird. But they do a mini-set of Skynrd if you're down. Songs like "The Breeze", "That Smell", "Saturday Night Special", "Give Me Three Steps" and a few others that I can't remember off the top of my head.

No cover and lots of Mardi Gras beads. It will be amateur night for sure, but since the bar owner/bandleader asked me very nicely to sing with them, I'll put up with the crowds for a while.

No Freebird. But there were renditions of "Well Respected Man" and "You Really Got Me" added to the setlist, girls dancing on pool tables and, of course, the masses showing the love for the best rendition of "Jumpin' J@ck Flash" they've heard in.... at least 2 or 3 days.

Interesting. Let us know if they play Driven to Tears, one of the most under appreciated Police tunes of all-time.

Here's their setlist.

Message in a Bottle
Synchronicity II
Walking On The Moon
Voices Inside My Head
When The World Is Running Down
Don't Stand So Close To Me
Driven To Tears
Hole In My Life
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
Wrapped Around Your Finger
De Do Do Do De Da Da Da
Invisible Sun
Walking In Your Footsteps
Can't Stand Losing You
Roxanne
King Of Pain
So Lonely
Every Breath You Take
Next To You

It's the Syncronicity Tour 2007-08. Of course this time you aren't paying 15 bucks a ticket.

Look at that setlist*.

All the good tunes are early ones, before Sting got all of that vast acclaim from the critics.

Another complete fucking douchebag who after getting a little love from the critics, unilaterally decided that he was the All-Time-God-Of-Music, and never wrote a decent tune since.

What a wonderful world it would be if they could lock Sting, Bono, and Michael Stipe in a room and pump some poison gas into it.

And what's with these amazingly arrogant wannabe's giving themselves single names? Were they really seething with that much jealousy of Cher and Liberace?

* -- Any band that decides on a concrete setlist before a tour even starts is monumentally gay, and has guarnateed beyond all doubt that the only people that will appreciate the shopw are tone-deaf idol-woprshippers. I'll never pay another dollar for such contrived mediocrity.

If I'm in the area by chance and can score a wristband, might have to go --

Just got word that Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks are playing a MySpace "secret" show next Tuesday, March 4, the day the new "Real Emotional Trash" album comes out. What, exactly, makes this a secret when they're announcing it via blog four days ahead of time? Heck if I know.

Just saw Medeski, Martin & Wood at the German House here in Rochester. War getting comped for front row balcony tickets.

Unwar MMW's security acting like total pricks to my buddy shooting pics with his SLR camera. Which I should be getting copies of fairly soon, assuming he didn't completely fuck up his camera's settings to compensate for the dark conditions.

BTW: For those unfamiliar with MMW, try to imagine your local ballpark's keyboardist on acid, joined by a equally creative bassist and drummer.
