even worse, another band i'm dying to see, spoon, is playing the vic in chicago the same fucking night. THREE FUCKING SHOWS. chicago is the greatest music city outside of nyc and philly is a very underrated third.jiminphilly wrote:fuck dude you get around. give me a review of nada surf. I downloaded Lucky but haven't listened to it yet.Screw_Michigan wrote:HL are playing a free show in the chicago suburbs on April 4. i'll be at nada surf that night, but this would be on my list if i wasn't already occupied that night.
to be honest, i listened to lucky twice and i was so disappointed, i haven't bothered to listen to it again, and i love nada surf. it's like the light radio version of NS. it's very soft, very light with absolutely NONE of the addictive pop rock that made let go and the weight is a gift such phenomenal albums. i love all the different kinds of tunes the band has put together over the years and the way the albums evolved from high/low to the proximity effect to let go and to weight.
but when it comes to lucky, i can only paraphrase this guy:

you're the people being negative. and some of the fans. fruit fly isn't walking through that door, always love isn't walking through that door, hi-speed soul isn't walking through that door, what is your secret? isn't walking through that door, blizzard of '77 isn't walking through that door, blankest year isn't walking through that door, and if you think that stalemate or paper boats or God and G0D forbid killian's red is walking through that door for lucky, they're going to be grey and old. what we are is young, exciting, hard-working, and we're going to improve. people don't realize that, and as soon as they realize those damn songs are not coming through that door for lucky, the better this town will be for all of us because there are young guys in that band playing their asses off.
there just isn't any ROCK element to lucky. none. it's all so relaxed. while i respect that element of the band (paper boats and blizzard of '77 are two of my favorites), lucky just hasn't grabbed me. i'll spin it a few more times before i go see the show, but i'm not holding my breath.
i still love the band. i'm amazed with how awesome let go and weight were that people only remember them for popular and at the tampa show my friend went to in october, there were only 150 people there. at the band's best, it's some of the most addictive alternative pop you've ever heard. at their worst, well, you get the soft rock stylings of lucky. too bad.
