The Supreme Court heard an appeal by DC. A lower court had ruled the ban on handguns unconstitutional and the Supreme Court weighed in last week re-affirming that the 2nd Amendment does in fact yield to the right of individuals to keep and bear arms and NOT JUST militias.

This sounds like a Fenty reaction to that.

As I read it, the SCOTUS only heard oral arguments last week. Is there an honest to God SCOTUS ruling that the DC cops are trying to circumvent? Seems to me that were that the case, all hell would have broken lose.

I think the primary focus of this "mission", as stated in the link, is to allow parents, grandparents, guardians, etc. to ALLOW the cops in and search. It doesn't indicate that anyone will be kicking down any doors and storming in to remove weapons and arrest people - or take kids hiding in a closet back to Cuba :D

But even so, if there was already a ruling striking down the DC gun ban, why would cops be searching at all? I think what you were reading was not a report on a ruling, but a report on oral arguments wherein the reporter took the "sense of the court" as expressed during arguments to be that the court would eventually strike down the ban. Which would explain why DC cops are scurrying around like mad trying to scare people into giving up their guns.

I think you just said what I was trying to say in my initial post in a more effective manner.
